What's the difference between the Power Cartridges and the Manual Cartridges? I have a Power Razor and am wondering if both types of cartridges can be used. The manual will be $2.66 cheaper for me.

Yes, they will both fit. The difference is the power cartridge has a lubricating strip at the bottom. "Microcomb (available exclusively on Gillette Fusion ProGlide Power) helps guide stubble to blades. Streamlined Comfort Guard?s channels clear away excess prep."

Bought my last back at Sams Club 14 pack for around $50 after tax. Best price on these I have ever got Nov 2010 for $19.12 Amazon they have gone up a lot since then. This go around was $23.20 after double coupon and S&S. Not bad considering, thanks op & repped. I'm sure the double coupon will be fixed soon. Better hurry - I got the 8 pack power

Does anyone know the difference between Manual and Power blades. IMO, it's plain marketing with some cosmetic (color) changes.

seannyd1 02-18-2013 06:27 AM

Picked up the 8-pack manual. Thanks! These are my favorite razors but I never have seen them drop to a price I felt were acceptable until today. Much appreciated OP.

That wasn't the deal at my Costco this week. They had a 14-pack of Gillette Fusion Proglide Power for $47; or a "12+4" pack which had 12 Gillette Fusion (manual) plus 4 Fusion Proglide Power for $44. And then the coupon for the Gillette Comfort Advantage Shave Gel which made that free.

I ended up buying the 12+4 pack and used the coupon.

wowthatisadeal 02-18-2013 07:01 AM

How did companied convince anyone that a battery-powered vibrating razor is better than a manual razor?

A wiggling razor supposedly shaves better (it doesn't at all, according to empirical research) and its blades warrant spending a few extra bucks? I was one of the research partisans involved in test marketing of Schick's first vibrator-razor, and I thought it was stupid back then even.

I shave twice per week, but I also use my slightly older blades to shave my head twice per week.
I probably get about 2 months of face shaving, plus an additional 2 months of head shaving per blade. Those times don't overlap. I use the ProGlide manual.

The blades are like a hot knife through butter for the first week or two, then not so much...but hey, gotta stretch that buck.

I probably go through one every three or four months. They still work great even then but i just feel it is probably time to use a new one after so long. :D

Thanks for the heads up! I cancelled my Amazon order and ordered the power cartridges from drugstore.com for $1.10 less. Not only were they cheaper, but I don't have to wait a month to receive them with the stupid subscribe and save (this service absolutely sucks now).

fallencptjack 02-18-2013 07:33 AM

I buy the $44 16-pack and gel deal from Costco whenever it comes up (which is valid right now until 2/24). 16 blades last me a year, but I shave every day and have fairly sensitive skin, so I trash them as soon as I can feel them pulling a little. It's also a good reminder for me to change my contact lenses.

5stardeals 02-18-2013 07:38 AM

but you can extend the life of your razor by running it up and down your jeans legs (stropping)... however if you have a moisture strip on your razor, well it isn't going to be there.. do you really need it with a good lather though?.. you'll want to do about 10- 20 strokes in each direction after each shave and then also storing it in something that repels moisture such as rubbing alcohol, baby oil, even cooking oil or olive oil... a small glass of baby oil in the corner of your bathroom counter works well.

Stropping.. the method used on straight razors (convex edges) in this case doesn't really sharpen the blade so much, instead it helps remove water and any left over residue on the blade edge which will cause it to start rusting and oxidizing. It will also help straighten any rolled edges and nicks the blades may have.

The simple above methods should extend your razor life by a week (or more).. which extends your wallet a bit more.. if you can double your shaves out of a razor blade then you've doubled your money... if you can't get these methods to work, then you've lost nothing but a bit of time and you can use the baby oil on your girlfriend/wife for the next game of naked twister.

riverstyxxx 02-18-2013 07:39 AM

Damn..Now I can see why more and more people are going old-school and switching to double-edged razors, lol.

seanultra 02-18-2013 07:44 AM

i bought pack of 4 on ebay for $10.50 buy it now, this is an ok deal, nothing big

jzyoufool 02-18-2013 07:45 AM

This a good deal but if you don't mind using the Mach 3 still, the $4 coupon works for Mach 3 razors too, I was able to get S&S 15 cartridge for $20.20 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...duct_title

I can get over a month out of one easily, but I shave every other day.

The trick is to DRY the blades after every use. Leaving them wet is what will get the blades dull the fastest. Take a towel and run the blades forward (opposite of shaving) on it to dry it off.

Also, do yourself a favor and get a decent shaving cream (Art of Shaving, Proraso, Trufitt & Hill) and a cheap shaving brush. It'll make a world of difference.

Grabbed the 8-pack from Drugstore for $19.54. Not sure why people are buying on Amazon for more.

New_World 02-18-2013 07:50 AM

pretty decent deal.
in for one.

AceNJ 02-18-2013 07:50 AM

It's less at drugstore.com plus you can combine with 10% CB from discover making the grand total $19.12 + tax

dbpaddler 02-18-2013 07:56 AM

FYI, $10 reward bucks at CVS and a $4 coupon in the coupon section of the weekly circulars should prove to be a good deal. Haven't stopped by yet, but will be later today.

8pk of ProGlide Power Cartridges are $33.99. [cvs.com] $10 in reward bucks and the $4 coupon bring it to $20 for 8 PGP Cartridges.

martymvpturco 02-18-2013 08:00 AM

Double edge shaving is the only way to go, IMO.

Grab this Merkur Classic Razor off Amazon: http://amzn.com/B002A8JO48

And a pack of 100 blades: http://amzn.com/B001QY8QXM

For $50, you get enough razors to last you a couple of years, a MUCH better shave, and bragging rights to your friends that you shave the old fashioned way!

Shaving is a lost art that has become a rushed part of our morning routine instead of a time to pamper yourself.

I recently made the switch to DE wet shaving and will never go back! Shaving has actually become fun for me. I really enjoy building my own lather using the bowl and badger hair brush.

If anything, atleast get yourself a $20-$30 badger brush and start using that to apply your lather. It will raise the hairs on your face up and give you a better shave.

YMMV. I already used the 15% at Drugstore plus they charge sales tax. So it's a good couple bucks more than Amazon.

Yea lol. I switched a couple months back and I'm liking it so far. It takes some time to get the technique, but it's fun to learn. I change my blade about once a week and you can pick up a pack of 100 blades off amazon for like $9-$10.

Thanks! Because of amazon sales tax, this worked out cheaper for me. And drugstore threw in an additional 5% off for non-prescription purchase on top of the 15% and the two coupons - total = $18.56 (with 2 day shoprunner)

The last time there was a sale someone posted info about http://www.dorcousa.com/ and I haven't looked back. I got the LSXA1000 & LSXA1040: Soft Touchâ„¢ 6 Blade System for Women & Cartridge Combo Pack and the SXA5000 & SXA5040: 6 Blade with Trimmer System for Men & Cartridge Combo Pack for $27.35 shipped. That's a total of 10 cartridges and a handle for each of us. Considering I get 4-6 months out of a cartridge by drying it after each daily use, I am set for a few years.

The shave is comparable if not better than my Gillette Fusion.

Sorry if I'm stepping on any toes here, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to let others know.

LTZOD 02-18-2013 08:25 AM

Awesome find!! Repped. I got the 6 pack for 19.94 w/ them 2 months ago, so for an extra $.50 this is a HUGE steal!

SlowGT 02-18-2013 08:35 AM

Out of Stock.

Edit: Tried again and got one!

adi778899 02-18-2013 08:35 AM

Gillette Fusion is the first generation of 5 blade razor, Proglide is the 2nd generation. I know first hand from an engineer that designed the blades for Gillette Proglide that Proglide last much longer than Fusion so don't compare prices for the two variants. I was told to never buy the old Fusion blades as they are not worth the money and will get dull really fast.

hollywood_barga 02-18-2013 08:36 AM

Got one, thanks!
S&S discount is 15% for me since I have five subscriptions for the next delivery, by the way.

ummm..who was comparing original to proglide? People were comparing power to non power, but that's about it. And both are ProGlide.

MajWilliams 02-18-2013 09:00 AM

Preshave oil saves my face from any irritation (oil +shaving cream), and these razors are amazing and quick!

spl152db 02-18-2013 09:04 AM

you people still buy these expensive ass things? I use a straight razor or dorco razors. $25 bucks will secure you way more than you can use.

http://www.dorcousa.com/sxa5040-6...artridges/

6 x 6 = 36 blades for $25. I use these daily. And yea, gilette can go kick rocks. Never i mean NEVER buying any of their crap again.

BlueBeard 02-18-2013 09:08 AM

I shave 6-7 times per week, and I don't feel any real difference between the power and manual cartridges. I do need the power handle though, I feel a big difference in comfort with the vibrating blade.

Dry your blades thoroughly and they will last for months. When I first learned about this I tested it and used a single blade for an entire year, starting January 1st, and it wasn't until November I thought about changing it. Now I change it out every 4 months or so, but keeping it dry keeps it a comfortable shave.

I've seen people mention these here before and looked into them. If they put out a power handle like the Gillette I'll gladly give it a try, but I really need that. When my battery dies mid-shave I go from reasonable comfort to near pain. My beard is thick and tough and the vibration makes a big difference for me.

ok turns out the blades are proprietary to the handles, but a little duck tape and a trip to your local adult store to get a "bullet" would solve your issue. and probably be cheaper than buying a gillette handle.

Thanks for the link. Since I can't find my powerglide handle for some reason, I'll give this system a try. I liked the fact that the powered powerglide version helped vibrate the blades made shaving very very easy compared to the manual version. Since these dorco's are manual, we'll get to see how these 6 blades compare.

I tried DE shaving (I think I got this exact razor) but found that no matter what I did, I got more irritation and less of a close shave than with these cartridges. I know people on B&B, for example, like to rag on cartridge shaving, but for me, the DE shaving sucked.

It will raise the hairs on your face up and give you a better shave.

cccheel 02-18-2013 09:35 AM

To each their own. I get a much better shave with much less irritation with these Proglide cartridges than with a DE blade.

Time is money. I understand the quality argument, but old-fashioned shaving is not frugal if you can invest your time elsewhere with a greater return.

Not to rain on your parade, but my experience is that blades go dull before they rust. I get maybe 10 good shaves before I start feeling the difference. My face is worth more than $3/blade to me.

Maybe some people get really thick skin or really thin hair, so they either don't dull the blades or don't feel the difference. Too bad that I am not like that, so I have to pay :(.

Big +1 on this! Not only is it cheaper, but you get a closer longer lasting shave. Also, the good shave soaps/creams leave your face feeling 100 times better than the goop most people by in the stores.

you can use the "good shave soaps/creams" without using the DE. The DE's don't get as close of a shave without really pulling your skin super tight, going against the grain and in every direction, and it doesn't last longer. if it really is "closer" I would get ingrown hairs from it anyways.

I bought and used a DE because of people like you suggesting it. WORST INVESTMENT EVER.

I think most people abandon DE shaving too quickly. The shave depends on your razor, the razor blades (certain blades do not work well in certain razors... I know because I tried a lot and some are amazing and some are poor with my razor), and the soap/cream, or quality of the lather from the soap/cream. With a good razor/blade combo with a good lather, I don't even feel or hear the blade cutting through my wiskers. At times, I think I'm not even shaving, and then I feel my face, and it's perfectly smooth.

I can say without hesitation that I get a better shave with a DE in all aspects. It's not even close. I used these cartridges for 20 years, including these Proglides at the end, and when I switched to using a DE properly, it was night and day. Just recently I went on a trip and forgot my DE and bought a Proglide locally. The shave was way worse than my DE and I couldn't wait to get home a shave with the DE again.

6 months long enough? If not then screw it anways. dorco blades are fine. I had never cut myself before the DE and haven't cut myself since. constantly cut myself on the DE. and yea tried multiple blades and razors and creams/soaps. so yea. I was offering a product that is the SAME as what is advertised, is used for a commercial product (dollar shave club), and is cheaper.

Ouch, brother. If you require the vibration to avoid a painful shave, I really urge you to give single-blades (DE safety razor) a shot. I have coarse hair, and a sensitive face, and I very nearly eliminated my razor burn/bumps when I switched. I don't see how you can use the same cartridge for months with a beard like that -- even with a new cartridge every 4 shaves the Mach 3 blades were too hard on me!

Buying a $30 safety razor is a big investment for something you can't be sure will help, I know. That's why I started with a cheap option. Bic Sensitive single blade disposables are ~$3 for a dozen at Walmart or a drug store. Be gentle your first time or you'll Ginsu your face. You're used to having to shave hard, but a single blade doesn't require so much pressure. There's a gap behind the blade so it won't clog. That gap is your saving grace for thick hair, but it also means it's easy to be too aggressive.

That's a false argument for most people. If you are Bill Gates from 1997, maybe your time is that valuable. I say if your time is so valuable, maybe you should skip shaving or switch to an electric you can use while you read your morning emails.

FWIW, it takes me 10 minutes to shave with a brush, mug of soap or cream, and a DE razor. I'm a little OCD about shaving, so that's not much longer than it took me with a Mach 3 and a can of goo. I make 2 passes, just as I had to do with the Mach 3. It literally takes 1 minute to build a lather and 1 minute to brush your face (brushing helps raise the hairs). That's 2 extra minutes of shaving time. The first time, it might cost you 10 minutes to figure things out. Then it might take you 5 extra minutes for a dozen shaves to figure out what works best for you. After you find a soap and brush you like and do it a few times, it's 2 extra minutes. And for many people, it's 2 extra minutes that mean a lot less discomfort.

If you can shave dry, with cold water and no soap, or with a rusty butter knife comfortably, then sure, maybe DE will cost you a lot more time. But you probably don't need a $2.50 cartridge to shave, then, and could buy cheap disposables for a fraction of the price. But if you spend the time to put hot water on your face, lather up, and carefully dry/strop/etc your cartridges, DE isn't really costing you any time.

I'd argue for everyone to try a single blade (DE or Bic Sensitive), even if they keep using crap-in-a-can. Not everyone wants to fuss with a brush, that's fine. It's still cheaper and less irritating for most people. Just using a different razor doesn't cost you any extra time.

Suggest to pick up Shark Chrome blades after you get used to it..They require expert-level because they're very smooth and brisk and very sharp..100 for around $14 but you definitely get what you pay for..At least 4-7 shaves out of it before changing. Dorco's st301's are really good and cheap ($8 per 100), and Astras are good but also forgiving at $10 for 100. Derby's are ok too, its a toss-up between Astra and Derby.

Protip for mixing up your own soap: Hit a CVS for Williams Mug Soap and look online for Kiss My Face Lime Green..They sell it a lot of stores, a tube will set you back about $5 and last forever. After you mix up a lather, squeeze in a drop or two of kmf and try that out ;)

The blades go dull due to the chemicals etching away the cutting edge, not rust. Even the toughest hair is no match to a steel blade.

Feather blades are the best of the best but also incredibly expensive, there really are no price breaks on those ($40 for 100 is way too steep). I wish I could say the same about the qualify for their safety razors - the one on ebay/amazon is $20, made in japan, but has a lot of plastic parts. I debated buying it but in end decided against it.

Interesting.. Never heard or thought of that.... Hair dryer thing sounds like 2 minutes taken out of my morning (not good), so I am seriously thinking of maybe trying the baby oil thing.

EDIT: I changed my mind. Some related discussion [badgerandblade.com]

A comment that says it all:
Quote:

I gently pat dry my blades on a dry washcloth and then dry off my razor. It takes all of about 30 seconds. I have no idea how long this might prolong a DE blade. I seldom keep a blade more than 3 shaves anyway.

Chr0n0s_90 02-26-2013 11:35 PM

mother effer. I just bought ONE for 3.50 on Amazon the other day. It sucks too because they're addon items meaning you have to buy $25 worth of stuff for them to ship.
