1300 Southwest Rapid Rewards points for only 99 cents!!!!! (AA, UA, DL, US similar point offers as well)

1 Attachment(s)
In the Rapid Rewards shopping portal, you can subscribe to New York Times digital subscription for 4 weeks for just 99 cents and net 1300 points for doing so.

https://rapidrewardsshopping.sout...?mids=3260

The good thing here is that SWA deposits the 1300 points at the 2 week mark at which point you can call 877-698-5635 to cancel the subscription so you don't pay the $15 after expiration.

This works out to 13.13 points per cent!

BONUS to make it even SLICKER:
Using the same rapid rewards shopping sign-in, you can sign up for two subscriptions to the NYT with a different name and credit card (your significant other?) and it will still deposit to the same RR account!

Cheers and happy flying!

Edit:
The disclaimer of "Not eligible on subscriptions cancelled prior to 120 days.", just means that accounts cancelled in the past 120 days are not eligible for this offer again.

Worked successfully for United points per Flyertalk with the same disclaimer:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mi...cents.html

Seems to be with most airlines too:

Rapid rewards shopping mall purchases do count toward your Companion Pass earning so this should count as well. See attachment.

Call this number to get your southwest miles. The csr told me that she would manually add the points to my account if they didn't appear within one week. it did go over by a few days, but i just noticed that the points DID just post.

214-932-0333

Deal is DEAD for SWA[/SIZE]

From an ethical point of view, bear in mind that you're basically tricking the New York Times into buying you ~$15 of Southwest points. I suspect it would work, but I don't think it would be right.
Really you're just paying $1 for NYT to have your info... No where do they state that you need to commit to an active subscription with them after the 4 weeks are up.

You have to call to cancel....makes doing it multiple times awkward

ben4500 02-19-2013 03:09 AM

Does this count towards the companion pass? I've found deals like telefloral and turbo tax promotions with southwest don't count towards the companion pass.

playgamespool 02-19-2013 03:34 AM

In the past they didn't subtract points but now they will...for 1300 pts it's worth a shot.

Is 1,400 UA miles > 1,300 SW pts?

Bemanix88 02-19-2013 04:25 AM

Thanks! giving this a try. I'm just 800 points away from being able to redeem for a gift card.

djm409 02-19-2013 05:04 AM

So I'm assuming that you can only choose one of the airline programs to take advantage of this offer? I've got each of the airline credit cards that are listed.

Also, anyone know if I could try this with a Chase personal card AND business card to double dip?

gamefreakgcb 02-19-2013 06:48 AM

It seems we can cancel without calling. I see the option in "My Account".

Can't speak to this offer, but Teleflora counts for the companion pass. At least it did during their Valentines day promo, although it was only a base amount of 1250 per order over $39.99. Mine have posted already and verified as counting.

At this point I believe it's just smartest to apply under whatever airline you deem most valuable. I personally needed both AA and SWA and chose SWA since I fly domestic more (and i have CP).

If you're paying with Paypal can't you go into Paypal in a couple of weeks and cancel NY Times as one of your preapproved payments? That may be the easiest IF you're using Paypal.

I have credit cards under 2 names (maiden and married name) so can I use those 2 credit cards to sign up twice? Or does it matter that the billing address is the same? If so, if your "significant other" is a spouse, then using their credit card won't work either.

I used your link and signed up. Is there somewhere on Southwest account where we can see this pending for points? Or will it just be deposited in 2 weeks?

You should see it show up here:
https://x.rapidrewardsshopping.so...ma____.htm

in probably a week or two. It takes forever for this website to update but all of these airlines shopping portals seem to be the same.

You should however see them actually deposit in your RR account in roughly 2 weeks from signing up.

mj86 02-19-2013 08:11 AM

OP, you should change the title to list all the airlines. Many people would prefer to get the points in another account. I chose Delta.

MarcoPolo88 02-19-2013 08:21 AM

Giving it a try with UA points. Thanks OP

goldenbb 02-19-2013 08:21 AM

I highly recommend using a credit card that can generate virtual CC #'s . Use them to generate card numbers with very low credit limits - say $5 or less - that way you won't even need to bother cancelling.

If you are worried that the points won't post think of it this way: 1300 RR points are worth approx $20 and I'm guessing there's at least a 50/50 chance the points will post, personally I'm more than willing to risk 99 cents on a 50/50 gamble that has a 20 to 1 payoff.

joeboy 02-19-2013 08:24 AM

Slight warning -> I had a really hard time cancelling my free trial. Called, got CSR, got confirmation number that subscription was cancelled, they still charged my card.

Repeat three times, each time also having to call the card company to dispute the charge - which was ultimately reversed.

I suppose the upside is that I had access to the NYTimes for over 6 months for $0.99, but it was still annoying that their routines for cancelling were so buggy.

If you do this -> keep detailed notes when you call to cancel -> Name of CSR, time, confirmation codes, etc -> and be prepared that it might not work the first time.

I wouldn't recommend that, they can still keep the subscription going and then bill you a year later by mail and when you don't pay it will go to collections. Happened to me with Sirius radio.

The reason it's not working for you is because they charge you 99 cents and a 1 dollar pending charge on top of it. So you need 1.99 total but you'll see the $1 authorization charge drop off a day or two later.

RowdyReptile 02-19-2013 08:35 AM

FWIW, 1300 SW points are worth $21.66 toward SW flights since they typically redeem at 60 points per dollar.

Or maybe even more than that. I just priced a flight at $239.80 or 13,080 pts + $5. In that case, it only takes 55 points per dollar, so each point is worth 1.8 cents.

American is my airline of choice, wondering if 1500 miles is worth paying $56.46.

120 days / 7 days in a week = 17.14 weeks(round up to 18 weeks). Cheapest subscription option is "After the introductory period, your rate will be $3.75 per week, billed every four weeks." after the first four weeks for .99 cents comes out to $56.46 after 18 weeks.

My math could be wrong so I wonder if this is worth $56.46. Personally I'm not missing out by not having a NYTimes subscription.

i did all digital, as well, but did not do the update portion. i set a reminder on calendar and which cards i used to make sure to cancel in time.

i bet the other user's AMEX didn't go through because of the additional $1 they put on there. i think he/she said there was only $1.xx remaining on his card. in that case, it wouldn't go through.

I thought it meant you had to keep your subscription for 120 days before you cancel in order to keep your points/miles. I'll cancel this subscription in 2 weeks then. Hell of a deal then.

Edit: Not sure why the wording confuses me. It reads like what I thought in the first place.

Please note these terms & conditions:

New subscriptions will be eligible one time only. Not eligible on subscriptions cancelled prior to 120 days.

Flyertalk user reported that you can have two different people (name and CC) deposit into the same account. I'd recommend trying to use the same shopping portal and try for an incognito window maybe?

If you use these shopping portals to accumulate points on a regular basis, you also know that just because they deposit them does not mean they don't revoke them later.

They do it all the time for returns or cancellations such as this.

RowdyReptile 02-19-2013 09:00 AM

I see you can get 1000 SW points ($16.66) for using TurboTax also. I'll have to remember that.

Yes i do but technically you get the 1300 points for the signup, not for committing to further subscriptions to NYT. The disclaimer listed on the portal only means that accounts cancelled in the last 120 days are not eligible for this offer.

cmorris1441 02-19-2013 09:02 AM

Just did it and finished on NYTimes site. No confirmation from Southwest. that's normal, right?

I hope you're right. The way the disclaimer reads doesn't seem to be referring to the previous 120 days but to the next 120 days.

Woohoo, second companion pass

Was 1543 from our second companion pass, in for two so I don't have to wait another month for our SW CC points to post.

FM66 02-19-2013 09:18 AM

I bit and got the subscription. I'll set up an Outlook reminder to cancel in 2 weeks. Thanks OP!

Would there be an issues using a prepaid card, then emptying the balance before 4 weeks is up? I assume they will automatically cancel the subscription if they can't charge it.

Think so, i've had southwest mall purchases go toward my CP already so I assume this is the same.

People have done it before:

Just read the original story [boardingarea.com]. Impressive! I got the companion pass at the beginning of '12, which made it good for '12 and '13, just for getting the two SWRR credit cards. My wife and I have flown free for all of '12 and all of '13 because even with the 7 or so trips we've taken, there are always amazing deals on point redemption. Probably have another 7 to 8 trips to redeem this year too - we're just tired of dealing with the TSA, so we'll probably switch to driving / trains for future vacations.

Cool to see another travel hacker, though! Looks like you don't even need a SW credit card, if shopping in the SW shopping mall.

Or maybe even more than that. I just priced a flight at $239.80 or 13,080 pts + $5. In that case, it only takes 55 points per dollar, so each point is worth 1.8 cents.

Thanks and repped for the breakdown. Worked for me with a $5 prepaid debit, though I'll still call and cancel in 2 weeks. TU and rep to OP also.

There's no posted limit but per the flyertalk thread mentioned in OP, people have reported that using different names and different credit cards but through the same portal does deposit correctly for UA. It might be possible for the rest of the airlines but worth a shot for the doller.

From AA's site=Please note these terms & conditions: New subscriptions will be eligible one time only. Not eligible on subscriptions cancelled prior to 120 days.

Has anyone ever been able to get around the terms? I have seen too many examples where people were shot down and had the miles taken out of their account if they did not comply with the rule stated.

The 120 days disclaimer just means that accounts that were canceled in the last 120 days will not be eligible for this offer.

1,500 miles on American seems like a great deal if you're geared towards international travel more than domestic. And Southwest is a great deal for domestic!

Correction, the $0.99 is for 4 weeks. So we still have at least 2 weeks to wait for the points.

OP, is there a way to "claim" miles (particularly for UA) if they dont show up after a while? Because, the offer seemed legit when was alive so we should be able to claim miles (before canceling) IMO. Also is there a way one could see miles that are soon to be deposited in an account? I remember Southwest has something like that. I really hope this will work!

tillerrw 03-06-2013 06:10 AM

No points for me yet either. I'm keeping an eye on my RR shopping account and my RR account on the main page.

kg2140 03-06-2013 10:03 AM

No points yet either in RR

HipHopSoul 03-06-2013 11:15 AM

I got 500 points from Southwest, but not the 1,300 points as said on the post. Today is the mark I scheduled to cancel (the 2 week mark as also posted). Has anyone from Southwest got their full points or having an issue not getting their points?

jeepsanddeals 03-06-2013 12:17 PM

No points here either. Will give it another week and then cancel.

NYYSI 03-07-2013 04:51 AM

It's been two weeks for me and the miles still haven't posted to my AA account. Guess I'll wait to cancel.

aleck 03-07-2013 05:25 AM

Nothing for SW yet. I ordered the day this was posted.

Is the deal for a a dead for AA? The wiki doesn't say.

bsalta 03-07-2013 12:12 PM

Nothing for me, scam.

silow 03-07-2013 12:22 PM

Love it. A deal that seemingly no one has confirm yet with 100+ TU. Almost as good as the Heads Up and MSRP threads.

BTW I'll eat my words if my points ever post.

dadablacksheep 03-07-2013 01:30 PM

Southwest CS rep says 6 weeks to post points, or to even see any activity on your RR account, from any deals.

I doubt anyone will ever see these points. Wonder where the OP got 2 weeks....

FlyingNun 03-07-2013 01:50 PM

A lot of you need to relax. I don't doubt the OP. A lot of times with these SW deals the points post a lot sooner than the official stated dates. It all depends on the offer though. See the post below.

I thought we had to call. But if this addr works, you should put it in the wiki for easier access.

TetterkeT 03-08-2013 06:27 AM

It looks like I only got 250 points in my Southwest account for this. They posted 3/2 and I signed up for the NYT subscription on 2/19.
