Go to the page on Staples.com and click 'Reserve and Pickup' in blue under the Add to Cart.

Then find you location and click reserve if it is in stock.

Decent deal on a budget lappy. The Pentium B980 is faster than the AMD A6, however the on board video (HD2000) is fairly weak, but I don't think anyone would be buying this for any thoughts of gaming. Nice RAM upgrade as well on this unit.

Anyone interested should certainly see if they have a Demo in Store, the Toshiba's I have checked out in the last month, even the upgraded "L" line, are real flimsy when pressing down on the keypad.

Does anyone know how the build compares to the Lenovo G580? Specs are a little better on the toshiba (faster CPU, more RAM, bigger hard drive), but not huge difference for my basic uses. Also, the Lenovo lists up to 5 hours battery life, and I can't find any comparison for the Toshiba.

He mentioned using it as a server for builds.. That sure doesn't sound inexperienced. It seems more likely that Toshiba just has a crappy BIOS.

People overstate their tech experience all the time (e.g. Newegg reviews). If you really can't access the BIOS with a shortcut key at power-on and it takes downloading a 100MB+ file to acess the BIOS like he says, then I stand corrected. Otherwise, it is yet another ridiculous review.

same specs as the one the OP posted but it's an i3.

I tried the B580 but lenovo is a stick in the mud on "approved" wifi cards. not a big deal if your not planing on switching it. But I needed to because I have a mobile internet card.

These types of comments always crack me up. Have you ever tried actually USING a 15" laptop with resolution greater than 1366x768? It SUCKS! I had one with 1920x1080 and hated it; text so small you couldn't make out anything. I finally had to scale it down to 1440x900 to be readable at all and of course running at non-native made everything sort of fuzzy. Must be people with much better eyesight than me but I wouldn't even consider anything finer than 1366x768 for a 15" laptop; go to a 17" if you want more resolution, or better yet just hook up to an external 22" or 24" LED monitor and then the default resolution doesn't matter.

have been using native 1440x900 for 6 years.... In no way I said it needed to be 1080P, but 1366x768 is a joke...

i use to run everything at 800x600 because of my eyesight. Eventually (like a year ago), I realized you can modify the size of the text under the display settings. That made a huge difference so now I max out the resolution and set size to either 125 or 150 percent. I see things so much more clearly now then the lower resolution but still have the large text size.

I am all about a cheap laptop, because all I essentially use it for is checking some websites, word processing, and storing some photos. I don't need a lot of computing power, just the basics.

Is there anybody that owns this model or any Toshiba that can comment on the build quality? I want to make sure it will last for at least a couple years.

I reserved one, but never got the confirmation. I called the store a few hours later, only to be told it was out of stock and the person there pretty much conveyed that I was SOL. Many hours later, I get a reservation number cancellation email. Only thing worse would have been to waste time going to the store to get the same bad service.

I just bought the one in OP last night. It is my 3rd Toshiba laptop. I have never had any problems with any of them. First impressions on the new one is that it is faster than I expected and looks good too. It has a textured mouse surface that I don't prefer, but I usually use a standalone mouse anyway.

I paid about $410 for my A6 (L775D-S7340) last year and about $180 for this C855-S5350 and so far they are appear to be about the same speed. My A6 is a 17" and maybe a little more solid (anecdotal, for sure), but this new one is DEFINITELY a LOT more of a SD!

To each his own. I've been running 1366 on 15" laptops for years and find it works well for everything I need to do. Going up to 1440x900 doesn't buy you that much more screen space and 1920 makes everything too small. I run 720P videos and do all kinds of web surfing and casual game playing with no issues. If you want to shell out a bunch of money for a non-standard resolution, be my guest but the reality is that around 80-90% of 15" laptops sold are going to be at 1366x768 and most people are going to be just fine with it.

$40 ink rewards shouldn't be treated like a discount (it's like using a gift card so just another method of payment). The 20% discount is just a benefit of another company - if it isn't shared then you can't school us on it :)

Try checking out this page. Refresh will reset Windows, but keep all your personal files and settings. Reset will re-install Windows completely and you will lose all files.

Low end Processor wouldn't settle for anything less then i5 now days.

Toshiba i7 deal was better deal if you needed a laptop.

AznCracker 02-22-2013 10:31 PM

273 after rebate and tax! Nice. This might replace my parents 4 year old pentium laptop. If they dont want it, i guess ill sell it for $350 and make a profit.

Now days I can settle for a sandy bridge pentium processor and still get almost all my work done that an i5 mobile processor can do for me. I just added an SSD to this laptop and it flies. Can barely make out the difference between my i7 desktop for most purposes!!

I'm typing on one right now. The only major issue I've had with my Satellite L505-ES5034 is the screen developed a line down the center, but Toshiba knew about the issue and replaced the screen free of charge. However, now with the new screen, it flickers when I place the screen at a certain angle. I think it's a cable that powers the screen; it might be fraying... at least that's what I read on some websites.

I don't use this laptop for anything more than word processing, surfing the web, email and creating websites. It does run hot occasionally, and I've had to replace the battery after two years of use. Otherwise I've been happy with it.

OD has some good deals on Lenovo laptops, how does the overall quality of this Toshiba compare with Lenovo? Also would the processor on this laptop be comparable with the i3 3120 which is on the Lenovo?

Toshiba is a good budget brand. I am still using this Toshiba laptop (Satellite L305D-S5892) from a Black Friday deal from Best Buy back in 2009, and it is working just fine. The only thing I had to replace recently was the battery, but the battery will wear out completely in any laptop. No other issues so far. Since it's still working so well, I'm having a hard time debating whether or not to get this one. The upgraded features would be nice though, since this one I'm using is only an 2.00 GHz dual-core AMD Turion, 3GB RAM, and 160GB hard drive. I also got a Toshiba 40" LCD from another Best Buy Black Friday deal the following year I believe, and it has been working without a hitch as well, shouldn't have wasted money on an extended warranty for it. Bottom line is that they are a quality budget line, go for it.

I love my Satellite. However I did have to replace the hard drive a month in. If it weren't for the really crappy Toshiba hard drives, these would be great laptops. I remember the days when Toshiba was THE brand to get in laptops.

I had a m305d and it was the worst laptop ever. The hinges broke plus there was a video cable problem so the screen flashed every time I moved it. Hence I will never buy a to shi'a again

Easy Rebate from Staples -- is it a check or essentially credit for future purchases only at Staples? and, can I purchase 2 of these laptops or is it one per person for rebate purposes?

Lastly, is this laptop perhaps a better deal fort he same price?

You get your choice of a check or Staples gift card.

I couldn't resist and ordered one, using $80 in rewards. Order went thru fine and I see the pending charge on my CC, but order status on staples.com shows 'Researching, Problems with your order may prevent us from delivering it on time.'

The one thing I don't like about this laptop is the design of the keys. I prefer the older style design keys that were used but seems like everyone is now using these type keys. For the price you can't go wrong with this deal. Remember if you order using Shop Discover you'll get an addl 5% cash back.

its a pretty good computer with a great processor, but it could be had for cheaper. Note it only has integrated graphics so its not good for gaming. Also the screen resolution is only 1600 x 900. At 17 in, you would hope for 1080p

Where is the $50 rebate? Link?

onebigdeal 02-23-2013 08:40 AM

I am comparing this with the Toshiba C855D-S5359, and the Lenovo-G580.
http://slickdeals.net/f/5867414-L...at-ODepot?

I've read reviews that Lenovo has terrible repair service.
I already bought a Toshiba C855D-S5359 for $204.90 thirteen days ago, but I can still return it.

I have a Samsung and at least I get free phone support with it, and I did need a repair, but they replaced a couple of keys with ones from a different model and did not fix everything I asked them to fix.

My point is- I think the customer service is as important as the product and am wondering how Toshiba and Lenovo products and service compare.

I am leaning towards buying this laptop. My 7 year old one is having power connection issues and is liable to go at any time.

Could someone tell me if I am being too cheap? Should I get the ivy processor in this one:

http://www.staples.com/Toshiba-Sa...uct_136822

for $50 more....

or even get this one for $425:
http://www.staples.com/Lenovo-Ide...uct_984631

I realize it is likely going to be an investment for several years so I don't want to cheap out, but to be honest my main/only uses are internet browsing, work (Word, powerpoint) and occasionally downloading movie torrents. I don't game or run any demanding programs. Is there any benefit I am overlooking to the nicer computers or should I just save some money?

The default payment is a Visa prepaid card, but when you go thru the process of submitting your rebate you will see a message something like, 'click here to see other options for your rebate' - when you click the message you will see the option to choose a check. Many Staples easyrebates work this way.

well re-did everything and now i DO get the 304.00 total minus 50.00 Visa GC final total 254 plus tax.

now to pull the trigger or not??

benhenny 02-23-2013 09:50 AM

Actual price in CA:

$327.86(inc tax) - $50GC = $277.86

YumYumRice 02-23-2013 10:15 AM

Would be worth it if I could get it for that magic $180. But I don't think it's worth the $254+tax IMHO. But maybe that is because I don't necessarily need another laptop right now. Might be good for a parent/guest computer to use around the house.

Decided to order one for my Father as his 2006 Sony Vaio was recently retired.
Looks like a lot of bang for the buck, I might pull the 640GB mech drive and replace it with an SSD. I'll have to do a hands on to see what the speed is like.

Thanks OP and repped.

I will need a laptop at some point, but not quite yet. Is this a slick enough deal to forego waiting 3-4 months to get a different laptop? Or, will there probably be an equally slick deal in that time?

Thanks!

I am a deals blogger (One Frugal Chick) and use my Toshiba Satellite C655 for everything for almost 3 years now. Never ran into any problems with it. I only use it to blog, search the web, store photos, and print coupons.

A Nexus 7 or iPad Mini could smoke this thing in performance, battery life, portability, software selection, and resale value. I'd only recommend it to people who need it to run special software not available for tablets. For people using it for common tasks like web surfing, email, games, and movies, they'd be better served with said tablets which are in the same price range.

Been comtemplating on this for a few days. Finally pulled the trigger. Really can't beat it for my needs. This will be my first non XP device since XP came out. And you can do the rebate online!

pennywaltz 02-23-2013 01:44 PM

Got it. Instead of doing Reserve and Pickup, I had them ship to store since I didn't feel like printing that coupon :) Downside, it won't get there will Wednesday, but I'm don't need it right away anyway.

Kinda good timing.. my laptop of 3 years hardware starting to crap out.. machine is running uber slow even after reformatting. it's due to be replaced anyway.

I like my tablet, but would not think of a 7" tablet as a viable substitute for a 15.6" laptop with 640GB HDD. Especially with someone using it as their main computer. I wouldn't want to use my iPad as my main computing device even for Office apps.

I think Windows 8 is a great OS, but I run it on very powerful desktop hardware. This is clearly something more budget, so does it show?

beeker 02-23-2013 04:51 PM

I am leaning towards the HP 17" deal. I would have to leave in a half hour or so to get in on the deal before the store closes at 9pm. Seems like a good deal on a 17" laptop for my wife.

AcaFeLLa 02-23-2013 05:43 PM

Just received a reservation confirmation. What's the story on the 75 in store coupon? Looks expired to me in that OP link.

yi19082 02-23-2013 06:16 PM

$50 more and you can get an i3

richardxthripp 02-23-2013 06:27 PM

I ordered one via the in-store kiosk so I could use gift cards. They wouldn't let me use the Office Depot coupon because it says "no technology items," or an OfficeMax coupon because it says "cannot be combined with any other coupon." Any chance I could call in and get a coupon applied? It's not coming for 9 days.

LeaninBack916 02-23-2013 07:41 PM

Actually you won't. This is one of those purchases that is clearly stated as not being eligible for Shopdiscover cash back. I used Mr. R for 3%, and they seem to be hit or miss lately when you use a coupon.

Nope, still the same. I wonder why other companies don't jump on this system. Uses less paper (questionably, considering that a long receipts get printed), more efficient.

Is this deal still ON.
When i clik on the link for the laptop i get as follows
Reg 499, save -25, Now 479.99 Instance Savings -45 Rebate -50
Final price 379.99 each Price after Rebate. Is this the deal ?

So iif i applied the 75 couple in stores, it should bring it down to 304.99 + Tax right,, bcos the rebate pricing is already included here, or is there another rebate ?

posted on the thread on the same deal, got mine yesterday, nice computer except for the speakers, i've owned maybe a half dozen laptops over the years, i've never had such lousy speakers just dreadful, comparable to a hand held transistor radio circa 1960. i've hooked up my X-mini speaker but that kind of defeats the purpose of a portable laptop. still debating whether to return it or not. if i'm missing something when you guys get yours, PLEASE send me a message.
double damn.

You will have to use Windows 8 reset option. The key is inside the bios and is automatically retrieved when you re-install the OS.
Good luck if trying to load Windows 8 pro or anything different than Windows 8 core version that comes with the laptop. The product key is now embedded in the bios so when you trying to do a clean install it picks first the bios key and says that the key does not match the OS you trying to load.

Agreed!
I got the i3 version and the speakers are the worse speakers I have seen on a laptop, worse even then a Tablet or smartphone.
The sound coming out of the speakers is just awful and ridiculously tinny! There is no bass at all, just highs and mids that hurts the ears if you increase the volume.
I am not returning it because it will be used mostly as an HTPC with HDMI cable but the speakers are a joke!
You can try use loudness and equalizer (powerful mode) in the audio playback properties but don't expect too much of it.

Im sure there are workarounds for this, but what was wrong with having the key on the bottom or under the battery with Win 7 machines, or was that too much access in MS eyes

richardxthripp 02-27-2013 08:11 PM

Is there any way to replace the speakers with better speakers? I guess it would be really expensive and require a lot of work.

Microsof is doing it in order to prevent consumers for sharing or swapping keys between machines.

I too was surprised ... the UPS man and everyone passing would know it was a Toshiba w/ Intel inside :)

I thought double box was the standard these days. At least UPS treated it well and it works perfectly, and was a great price.

Very pleased so far!
