American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card (50K MR points signing bonus)

1 Attachment(s)
I've been checking this site occasionally to see what new credit card offers show up.

http://www.creditcards.com/cardmatch

Earn More: earn 50K Membership Rewards® points after you spend $1,000 during your first 3 months of Card membership; earn 15K points after you spend $30,000 within one calendar year

$0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $175

This is my first post so please be kind.

wikipost 02-20-2013 02:14 PM

This post can and should be edited by users like you :)

Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product within the last 12 months or any other Consumer ZYNC®, Green or Gold Card or Platinum Card® account within the last 90 days".
be careful not to waste HARD PULL if you had this card in last 12 months because you will not get the 50k bonus if that's the case.

You shouldnt get hit with a HARD PULL if you do not qualify for the card due to already having a previous card before. It first checks if you are a new cardtype holder and if you have not had the card then it hits and checks your credit score. So you never waste a hard pull.
Not true. there is no hard pull only if you currently have the same card. There will be hard pull if you currently don't have the card or if you canceled the cards months ago in the past. It is just that you don't get another sign up bonus for applying within 12 months.
50K MR points can get you 5 $100 BN giftcards or $250 in prepaid Amex CCs.

If you already applied for PLATINUM and Gold card earlier, don't apply again, application will be denied and cancelled considering duplicate. -QuestDestiny

From our SDer. Rep Sidar if you want to
My plan for the 50k points is 1 RT ticket to bangkok. This normally costs over $1000 so I think it was worth it.
I wouldn't waste these points with GC

MR points can be transferred to 16 airlines. Some good ones for domestic are jetblue and frontier. 50k is enough for 2 RT flights to anywhere in the USA and likely good enough for 2 RT tickets to mexico or C.A

not bad

although when i clicked on more info got an error

ToadKilla 02-20-2013 02:24 PM

I had this card about 18 months ago. Forgot if Amex gives points again if I reapply.

mat43 02-20-2013 02:25 PM

Damn, not valid for those who got in on the 100k mile platinum card a month ago, need to wait 90 days from Platinum card.

idrather 02-20-2013 02:26 PM

Sorry for the dumb question, but what can one redeem the points for? Thanks.

You will get points if your card was more than 1 year old. At least that was the criteria when during last offer as well..

RJ5929 02-20-2013 02:31 PM

I currently have a Gold Amex card from the 75k MR promotion in Aug 2012. I still have the card (waiting for BA avios 50% bonus transfer).

I guess I cannot apply again, right?

A ton,,,, you can reddem the points to buy travel tickets, you can buy electronics, you can buy gift cards, you can buy costco membership if you are not already a costco member (But cannot renew your exisiting one) you can buy bose products and a lot. visit Amex rewards [membershiprewards.com] for more.

Eagles89 02-20-2013 02:33 PM

Keep in mind that this is a charge card, which means there is no credit limit since you're expected to pay off the balance each month.

PandaHouse 02-20-2013 02:35 PM

Does this site do a hard or soft pull to show the card offers?

SkyKing02 02-20-2013 02:35 PM

it would be easier to spend 30k in a year if more places would accepting AMEX!

I see that you can transfer points to a small number of airlines, mostly at a 1-to-1 rate. I don't see it stated anywhere that there are fees involved in this transfer (other than if you do it over the phone), although knowing these guys there may well be.

Who doesn't accept AMEX? I haven't run into a single place that doesn't. My mother always asks "Do you accept AMEX?", whenever we go somewhere and I always tell her she shouldn't as it's just assumed.

JBG89 02-20-2013 02:46 PM

Can anyone give a brief overview on the credit needed for this card? Have a pretty short history?

Sam's Club...most small stores..

people don't want to pay high fee for amex....and i don't blame them.

It's a charge card so no limits are set. Good benefits but needs good credit. You might wanna build up credit and wait for 75K points offer.

My local great clips, my son's pediatrician's office, local mom and pop grocery stores to name a few

curiouslybrown 02-20-2013 03:04 PM

Got instant approval, thanks OP. I guess I could've held out for the 75k offer, but the spend seemed low ($1,000) which I like

I won't know what to do with 30k in amazon gc... unless you can use the gc to pay the amex bill...

a lot of local chains or smaller privately owned places don't take Amex, I get told they don't accept it at least once per month when I try to use it. Their merchant fees are higher than visa or MC, IIRC, particularly on smaller transactions.

djm409 02-20-2013 04:06 PM

Only getting offered 25k and need to spend $2,000. Is there a secret way to get the 50k and $1,000 spend offer to show up?

icefresh 02-20-2013 04:11 PM

Got this card last year around the same time with 50k bonus. It was just up for renewal. I called Amex and they gave me another 20k points (equal to $200 in gift cards) for keeping it, so basically I got another year for free.

Baldwiner 02-20-2013 04:34 PM

Rep'd. I got the AMEX 100K platinum earlier and just signed my wife up for this 50K offer. 50K AMEX is worth at least $600.

RU12 02-20-2013 04:43 PM

Interestingly enough I started randomly getting 3X points on Amazon and Paypal purchases with this card.

Not mentioned anywhere but looked at transactions for past 2 months.

$175, even ayear later (even with possible waiver) is a steep fee
Opening CC with a good CL is generally not detrimental to your credit rating
However, if you open and close it in order to avoid recurring charges, it will hit your credit history, and $175 might be steep for some users

kryton2005 02-20-2013 05:36 PM

Denied, Called recon line, got one guy saying he cant do much but put the application through another review that could result in second hard pull.

I called again and the guy says on its not denied but will take 3-5 days for a decision. with Amex is there a real recon line? since every guy I talk to says its not an instant decision mechanism like chase does.

Everybody is getting this card for the bonus and then canceling after a year. Aside from the credit inquiry, the effect on your score of doing this is minimal.

TBH- with amex you are usually SOL when it comes to matching but you have nothing to lose. Try sending them a Secure Message- sometimes that works better than a call..

It's 90 days from canceling the platinum right? Not 90 days from signing up? Signing up for the platinum 13 months ago still disqualifies me correct? TIA

Correct- you can't have a card from the same product family within 90 days. If its the same card you can't have it for 12 months. Again, these are fairly new T&C's and many many people have slipped by but if you don't its really hard to argue for your poins..

ursus 02-20-2013 05:46 PM

It would be minimal under FICO standards, if you credit utilization is low or zero on all credit cards, however, if there is some remaining balance - it will hurt credit rating

None that I know of and I check this stuff daily. The last one was 75k points for 10k spend so this is a much easier deal to work with.
The last 100k deal was a month ago but I have heard those normally just come around once a year

Personally I wouldn't try that. These are typically designed to bring in new customers. Lots of people get around it if enough time has lapsed but I wouldn't bring it to their attention that you already have one.

Good advice. Don't risk involving an existing card.

I'm eyeing the Surface as well. I have to pay insurance first. That'll eat up the 1000 spend quickly.

That really makes no sense at all. A new card is only a new card because it has a new number. Different products are encoded within the numbers so changing the product will require a number change.

I wouldn't get too wedded to a number you can have your number stolen or lose your card any day and you'll get a new number.

masterofmuppets 02-20-2013 06:26 PM

I also got in on this deal. Thanks SD!

So 50k pts can get me about $600? That's awesome!

Like you, I'll be buying a laptabtop and was considering the Surface Pro for a long time. Then I saw the ASUS TX300 and fell in love at first site. It fits my needs although very similar to the Surface Pro but I can't pass up on some of the pros it brings to the table compared to the competition.

Just my 2 cents. Happy Shopping!

Done Done Done! 100K points for me and my wife for an upcoming Honeymoon Cruise.

Now, will we be able to cancel next year?
Not ripping them off bcoz i have their Blue Card where i make over 1K of purchase every month and the sad thing its not a reward card, so no cash back!! Hope this deal evens that out.

You can cancel at anytime. As long as you cancel before your anniversary date you won't be charged the annual fee.
Since you are using a non reward card when you call to cancel next year you should inquire about getting downgraded to a reward card instead of outright canceling. They might waive your annual fee for another year, or downgrade you to a card that still gives some type of rewards

Slickdeals effect? Got a message about "System not responding/available" when I hit submit to apply with all the fields filled out! But I tried again then was approved without the nasty message. Now that gasoline is getting higher per gallon I will reach that $1,000 mark easy! Rejoice! :)

You're not going to get a bonus if you just change products. Hard pulls aren't the end of the world unless you've got like 30 on there.

Don't feel bad.. I applied when I got the mailer.. They offered me the plat or gold. But I took the gold.. Plat had a bigger point bonus, But they didn't wave the 1st year fee.. and the fee is $450+ a year. With the gold they wave the first year fee.

They paid off the points a bit sooner than I expected.. Applied on 12/15 and I found yesterday the points are already on my account ( don't know how long they have been there ).

Applied and was app last month for the bluesky card with a 25k point bonus. Between the 2 I should have enough for round trip to Moscow this summer.. yay!

generally you dont get same bonus twice in 12 months, i'd stay away if you got bonus recently. amex loves financial review a lot so if you don'd need it, don't try it. there are many bonuses from different cards

What do you mean by same bonus though? I got the Blue Cash card 7 months ago and got $125 from it (it doesn't use membership rewards points). It seems like it's an entirely different category of card & reward system

You applied for a VISA platinum so there is no issues. The platinum mentioned in wiki is amex platinum which is a completely different card.

You can transfer to delta at 1 to 1 ratio.

You can transfer to 16 airlines in total. Here is the LINK [membershiprewards.com]

Sometimes they do bonus transfers. For example last month you could transfer 1000 MR points to Bristish airways for 1300 BA points. Most the airlines offer 1 to 1 ratio with the exception of jetblue which does 250 MR points for 200 jetblue points

In my opinion this is the best way to use the points. You will get the most bang for your buck this way. I don't recommend transferring them until you know exactly what your going to do with them. You might end up missing out on a transfer bonus and I don;t think you can reverse the transfer.

Arguably the best use of points is by transferring them to an airline and using those points for buying award tickets. AMEX sometimes even has extra transfer bonuses. Basically one can get airline tickets that would otherwise cost hundreds or thousands. Some people like to get international tickets (60-100K points) but points can also be used for short haul travel or for a vacation to Hawaii etc. If you want to learn more, check out thepointsguy.com and the many posts there about transfering AMEX points as well as how to get good deals on award tickets.

You can convert it at a 3MR = 1 Starpoint at any point. Once or twice a year, AMEX gives a 50% bonus, so you can basically get 2MR = 1 Startpoint. So upto you how soon you need it.

I would sign up for this too if I knew I would receive the bonus for it but everything I'm hearing in this thread makes me believe that I wouldn't.

Does this bonus is only for Gold Card or any other american express card. I have american Exp. blue card and I applied for this card and got approved. I am thinking not to use the bonus point in near future. Can i transfer the 50K bonus offer to my american exp. blue card (no annual fee) and later when any bonus offer comes (like British airways bonus) then can I use the bonus on British Airways to earn miles?

Filipp2442 02-20-2013 08:33 PM

What are people doing about the 2nd year annual fee? Canceling the card? I believe 50k points = $350 Amazon gift card so its tempting but that 2nd year $175 fee or hit on the credit for canceling the card doesn't seem that worth it.

That's a pretty terrible exchange considering you can transfer these into 50,000 Delta miles. I'm personally going to transfer to ANA (All Nippon Airways) miles b/c I travel through from Asia to America often. But if you're not gonna fly, then I guess gift cards are ok.

I don't think the authorized user card will effect your chance for this. I know it doesn't with chase and citi. To be safe you could call and ask.

That's a pretty terrible exchange considering you can transfer these into 50,000 Delta miles. I'm personally going to transfer to ANA (All Nippon Airways) miles b/c I travel through from Asia to America often. But if you're not gonna fly, then I guess gift cards are ok.

You can get $500 in BN giftcards if you want. That's far better than ok to me.

Got instant approval for my wife and myself. Now, what I need to do for the next 3 months (I started applying on the 9th this month):

1 x NFL Extra Point - $2,500 in 3 months
3 x Southwest - $2,000 in 3 months x 3 = $6,000
2 x Amex Gold - $1,000 in 3 months x 2 = $2,000

$9,500 to spend in 3 months. Ouch.

But well worth it as I'll get $2,900+ in return. :)

Thanks, got approved. Repped !!

Guys, aren't there any chances of getting the 75K or 100K offer which people received last year vs signing up fo this 50K offer?

I dont think there was any offer for 100k points for this card. That was for platinum card with annual fees of 475 $ and was not waived for 1st year as well. There was 75K offer last year but you need to spend 10k for that.

What other legit sites are there where you can trade points for cash?

If you read this thread, there are a few options noted, most notably some guy named "Bruce".

So do they need access to your online account to transfer the points?

Does this card entitle you to those wonderful American Express Publishing books? They are really quite excellent because you don't even have to think about which book you want - they pick them for you and send them. Also, you don't need to worry about paying for them - they just tuck the charges neatly into your monthly bill - you might not even notice them. And as for pricing... they are so cheap! Only $40 each! And don't worry about ever having them accidently stop arriving - for even were you to try to stop them they will keep coming and coming and coming. Such a reliable service!

Of course it's different for everyone, but for me the best value is airline miles.

The next best value would be converting the points to SPG hotel points (when the exchange ratio is 2:1). That would convert to 8 free nights at a category 2 hotel property which usually run $100 a night.

The last resort for me would be to exchange for gift cards. But if you don't plan to travel or stay in hotels, I suppose your best bet would be to get gift cards at whatever retailer you frequent most.

1:1 aeroplan transfer and booking 2 round trips to HI from the east coast is what this can be good for.

I'm based in Taiwan, so I mostly use all my miles for trans-pacific travel back to the States. Since they're part of the Star Alliance program, I'll probably transfer my miles to ANA at 1:1 and try to use them that way. Chances are I'll get a one way first, then figure out how to get more miles and get another one way down the road.

I'm seriously getting so many miles I don't know what to do with them! I'm thinking business or first class is in my future! :)

Any useful benefits of this card, other than the 65K points promotion? I just got a US Airways Credit Card in order to get priority boarding and the yearly $99 companion tickets with 40K points with $90 annual fee.

The AMEX Platinum card was REALLY attractive, but I didn't catch onto that deal fast enough =(

aznprox 02-20-2013 11:16 PM

so I entered my information, but I dont see this card on the match list... did I do something wrong, or do I just not have the prerequisites... like I didn't meet their minimum credit score requirement?

Icecreamlova 02-21-2013 12:35 AM

This or sapphire preffered? Only 5k point difference.

Just got my United Card. My credit score might continue to take a hit and I want to make sure I am approved for Chase Saphire whenever they bump their bonus to 100,000

TBH- That bonus is never coming back for the sapphire. Chase had that once they initially offered the card but no more...

Can someone please post the direct link from creditcards.com to amex for this?

As I have just moved to the states, I have no credit here so the card doesnt show. However, if I can get the application submitted through this, Amex will approve me via their global transfer team.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Yes. I recently sold my United mileage points to him. PM me if you have any questions. He took over control for 1 month but payment was made up front via paypal.

Just applied and was approved. Card is being expedited. Been receiving non stop mailers to my house from Amex Gold for their 25k bonus offer. Finally got a better deal with this 50k offer.

I would sign up for this too if I knew I would receive the bonus for it but everything I'm hearing in this thread makes me believe that I wouldn't.

Oh well, I'll just wait till next time this comes around.

Anyone in my same situation and got approved regardless for another card?

I just applied for the blue card last week and got approved for that. I just applied for this card and also got approved for it.

xplicitone 02-21-2013 06:04 AM

So do people really cancel this before the $175 annual fee or ?? I've been meaning to get my first AMEX sometime soon. The BCE offer still seems there and no annual fee

Hi, are you sure this can be done by calling AMX. My brother just moved from Toronto to New York and he has excellant credit back there, but has been denied credit card when he appliys ( never mentioned anything about his past credit in Canada) Also if it works, it 's only Amx or any other credit card company, like Visa , master and Discover. Thanks. BTW, I tried to find the link for you, but didn't find.

vidyashankara 02-21-2013 06:18 AM

Yeap, this is a regular Amex card so you get all those little bonuses.
