Just found out Canon Direct will be having a sale February 24-27. It reads "20% or 30% Off Refurbished Lenses"
and
20% Off Select Refurbished EOS Digital Cameras (Excludes 5D Mark III Refurbished)

Most likely the 30% off is on the entry level 55-250 or 70-300 but even with the 20% there's some good deals and stock appears to be good at the moment. Remember this doesn't start until February 24th.

i have entered the canon website, it is really promotion, but the model is quite old, no interest for me.

The 70-200mm was available for a while because the Canons ordering system went down.

Yup. If you want something you better be quick to the draw. Which is why I'm posting this in advance.

I've been interested in a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS mkii and a 135mm f/2L If I can get either one... I'll be a happy camper. I doubt I'll get either, but here's hoping.

135mm f/2L FTW !!! Just magical lens. 70-200 f/2.8L IS II is just too bulky to take anywhere and everywhere without being noticed. It is one of the best if not the best zoom lens in the market. When I moved to FF, got rid of it and went with 70-300L.

The first time I heard about the magical 135 I thought... what 135... what the heck is that useful for. It seems too long for indoor portraiture, and too short for birding or sports photography, and while I haven't used it,... I've really love my 100mm f/2.8L macro. And I presume the 135L is going to be just that much better. Again... probably won't get it... but I'll be there at midnight hoping.

As for the 70-200... I had a f/4L usm and the f/2.8L usm and both were underwhelming. I'm looking to see if maybe I just had bad copies or maybe I'm more of a prime guy. I do like my 24-105, but I use that only when I don't mind not having MIND blowing shots.

As for it's weight... it didn't bother me. I am built like a fat hulk hogan though... And as for it's size... mostly men commented on the 70-200 f/2.8. I felt like the guy who drives a Hummer... compensating for something... but I'm just fine in that department...

ViperVisor 02-20-2013 07:50 PM

I just got a Sony HX9V off Amazon on Sunday.

A Canon was a contender but liked the other little things vs just a better snap shot taker.

Sony makes a fine product. There photos are pretty and they have a lens selection... but I do believe in following the lead of professionals. And unlike golfers where they are paid to use the equipment they use, professional photographers generally use the best equipment to get the shot. I don't see many pros using a t2i... but I do see them using a 135mm f/2L or a 70-200mm f/2.8L. And certainly the 5d mkii before the mkiii and obviously now the mkiii.

I'm not sure I am making much sense, but I think my point is that people who are paid to be great choose Canon and yes, Nikon. I don't see Sony as often... but I realize we are talking about two different strata.

My wife wants either the 135 or the 70-200 for her mark ii... I like using her tamron 28-75 f/2.8...it doesn't have IS but its still very nice glass.

Havocbean 02-20-2013 08:24 PM

For any who are interested, this is probably the only time you'll be able to get a non CPL 5D2 refurb, so not a bad price.

The 135L is an EXCEPTIONAL price, especially for the glass; tremendous for portraits. The 24-70 is OOS currently, and while the lens is amazing, for any working professionals out there - that bastard gets heavy. Maybe not for a quick jaunt, but after 9 hours at a wedding it gets old.

I bought this baby when it came out. Takes amazing vidoes. Photos are a bit soft due to Sony's proceesing software, but you really can't tell unless you zoom all the way in.

All in all a great camera.

Too bad its sitting on the shelf these days with my Lumia 920 having such an awesome camera :bounce:

I just bought a Canon 6D with 24-105 L kit lens. I wonder if any experts here could give me some advice what other lens to get. I'm on the fence for 70-200 since it's only 95mm gain from 24-105. I already have a thrifty fifty and hoping to find a zoom lens for the 6 d.

Thanks!

MMakoto 02-20-2013 10:23 PM

So the 24-70 ii is showing $2099, oos though, does this deal mean 20% off $2099? If so, then the final price after tax to ny is about $1828, not really a slick deal, but easily $200 less than the lowest price I've seen till date.

what do you mean by mind blowing shots?

I'm using the following with my 6D

70-200 f/4L
85 1.8
40 2.8
24-105L

The 70-200 f/4L (didn't need f/2.8 or IS as I use it outdoors with high shutter speeds) is a great lens. It's a bit goofy with it's "heat resistant" off white and inside the casing zoom but gets pretty sharp images. 200mm is more than far enough for me. You could opt for the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L or the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS if you wanted more range or even add an extender. And there's always the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS (non-L) if you wanted to cheap it. But I wouldn't.

Here's a 200 vs 300 range comparison to give you an idea of the zoom difference...

This might just be me but the 6D kit with the 24-105 seems like a better deal than getting the 6D body and then getting the 28-75. You save a good amount buying it with the kit. If you don't like the 24-105 then you can sell it for a profit. I originally bought the kit planning on selling the 24-105. Almost one year later and I still have the 24-105. One of my most used lenses. Certainly not the best lens out there but very versatile and pretty decent.

I ordered a 5Dmk3 (body only) and currently the only full frame compatible lens I own is an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. Any suggestions on a wide angle (prime or zoom) to start with? I do a lot of amatuer landscape and personal social events. Less than $1500 please...

He's talking about me. :) And I am leaning towards the 135mm. Anyone else use both that and the 70-200 f/4 IS to compare? Thoughts?

I bought my 5DMark II last April when they had them for $1484 with the "trade in your old broken junk = money off" sale. LOVE it. You will too; it is a great camera and one National Geographic photographers still use. :)

I read a lot of reviews and for my wide angle, ultimately decided on the Tokina 16-28mm. It got good reviews and I think I made the right choice. Bought off Amazon.

Check out sigma's new 35mm f/1.4 (around $800-900). Maybe not as wide as you'd like for landscape, but I've shot many a landscape using the 35mm and 50mm focal lengths, and it certainly gets the job done (and panoramas are an option more often than not if you need a wider angle), and the 35/50mm focal lengths are better suited to social events than a 28mm or 24mm. Other recommendations - if you can put up with no autofocus, look at the rokinon/samyung/bower 35mm f/1.4 (about $375) - great optically, especially for the price, but manual focus/aperture is less ideal for social events. The 24mm f/1.4L II ($1500) is also a nice lens, great for landscape but rather wide if it's the only focal length you are using. For zooms, check out the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 with image stalization (about $1200) - better optically than Canon's 24-70 f/2.8 (the original, not the II) and IS is useful - although I personally rather have a wider aperture than zoom when taking photos indoors. One last option - the 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens - so small, very cheap ($150), great optics - pretty much the perfect backup lens.

ottingerc 02-21-2013 12:48 PM

I'm a little embarrassed, but I never heard of a pancake lens before now. I just looked it up on Amazon and it seems like it's a great staple for its ridiculously low price. I'm hoping to get my camera before I leave next Thursday for a military training trip; and for $100-200 it'll be perfect for me to pick up just to familiarize myself with the Mk3!

The 16-35 2.8L is a wonderfully versatile lens, I have a friend who is a pro and he says its the one that gets the most use.

Why not try out the 24-105mm f/4L? These are kit lenses and very easy to find copies of this for very reasonable prices. When I upgraded my crop body to 5DMIII I had to give up my 17-55mm IS and needed a new walk around lens so I picked up a 24-105mm someone sold that was part of their kit. It was $750 if I recall on Amazon marketplace. The lens is very nice and light and you get the constant f/4. For a walk around I think it has a lot of nice reach as well as the ability to go wide. With the money you have left over I would even pick up the pancake 40mm. I too bought this lens and it's a great little fun lens. It's so light weight you'd think you just had a cap on the body.

That seems like a good price; not sure if I'll get it that low... I only bought the body alone because the website/credit company I was using didn't have the kit available. (AAFES)

Tamron 24-70 with IS is nice as long as you don't mind bokeh onions. :) Otherwise it's a good deal for the performance.

hmmm..

I picked up the 5D2 kit with 24-105mm lens when it was clearancing out at Fry's in Jan. This was for $2100, no tax. Took it out and blasted off a little less than a couple hundred shots. Awesome picture quality, and I loved the 24-105.

Here's the thing... I was shooting with a T4i, 17-55 2.8 prior to picking up the Mark II and I was already getting great picture quality with some of the features of the T4i. When I was using the Mark II, I kept looking for some of the features that I have in the Rebel that seemed missing from the 5D2 (5 fps, more robust metering modes, +/- 5 exposure compensation). Now, I am in no way saying that the T4i is a better camera than the 5D2. (The 5D's IQ was awesome!). However, I will say that my experience with Canon's 2012 Rebel camera made the 2008 5D2 feel just a bit dated (a little nagging feeling in the back somewhere). I felt like I could push the 5D just a little harder than I expected that soon, and that I would ultimately peak with it sooner than I would have liked. (I enjoy a bit of a learning curve, and growing into my equipment).

So, I ended up returning my 5D2 (+$2100), returning my 17-55 2.8 (+$1000), and now I'm just a couple hundred shy of the 5D3 kit with the 24-105. This took a LOT of thought and reading lots of boards, but I think this is the move that will work best for me.

So, I think if you're on the fence between the 5D2 and the 6D, you need to evaluate if the 5D2 tech will serve your needs for the next couple of years, so that you're not feeling like you want an upgrade shortly after investing in such a body.

Thanks for the reply, and those who reply on my post.

After watching some comparison video on youtube im now looking on saving more and get the 6D kit or 6D body.

So is there any confirmation on the Rebel series refurbs being discounted as well?

+1 on the new sigma 35mm 1.4, just got it today and super sharp, great bokeh, sturdy, and cheaper than the canon 1.4

Usually they are. Kits might not, but we shall see in couple of days.

Unless you need sophisticated AF system & weather sealing with mag alloy body, 6D is a better choice with WiFi and GPS.

5D Mark III is better than 6D in every possible way sans high ISO performance. But it's only like say 1/2 stops in RAW and maybe like 1 stop in JPEG at ISO >6400.

90 day, but you can trust Canon refurb products as new. I've bought many expensive lenses and bodies refurbished from Canon and haven't been disappointed except once.

My son got the t4i for Christmas for the sole purpose of making movies. I've been trying to research a good lens for this purpose but not knowing much about photography, it is very overwhelming and confusing. You all seem to know your stuff....any suggestions or recommendations? Thank you!

The STM lenses are good for the video recording for the T4i because of the "superior" auto focus in video mode. I don't have a t4i yet, so this is based off of research. However the most popular would be the 18-135mm STM lens.

Edit********** The 18-135mm is 400+, but they also offer a fixed 40mm "pancake" STM lens for 150 now. This would be used for close up videos, due to the lens being at a fixed mm and not "zoom" capable.

Ditto the stm. So the 18-135 or the 40mm. the latter is better for photos, but both are fine for video.

If the 40 2.8 goes on sale like it should that's a great value. I don't think I'd use the 18 135 as it's not that much better than the kit lens. (18-55)

vadim_s 02-21-2013 09:41 PM

Oh man, I hope 24-70 ii goes back in stock by 24th. My trigger finger is ready. ;)

Hmm, has it been officially confirmed that the 5DMkIII won't be on sale, or is it just speculation? I ask because the last one of these sales it was indeed 20% off. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a 6D but if I can get a 5DMkIII for $2239 I think I'd be able to pick it up.

Thank you for your reply and great links. after getting the Canon 60 D I am running short on cash. I was looking at some budget lens for under $500. I think I may just have to hold out for a moment.

I don't think he was talking about the IS mark 2 version. I've never used the non-stabilized one but have heard that while good it's not up to the mark 2 standards

That is correct. And it was good, but not in part with my 100 mm prime L.

I had the 18-135 STM and 40 2.8 STM. The 18-135 STM is much sharper than the non-STM version. And they are both super quiet. The STM lenses are really THE ones to get for video because that's what they were designed for.

I strongly disagree. The 18-55 I considered a throwaway. The 18-135 STM was an excellent (fast, sharp, nearly silent) lens.

I would get STM lenses if your son wants to shoot action videos where the subject is constantly out of focus.

STM lenses (when paired with a T4i) let you Continuously AF while shooting video.
There are only 2 EF mount STM lenses so far, the 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 STM.

If you do not need to Continuous AF during video (in shots where you prefer Manual Focus, or the subject is in a fixed distance from the camera), you can consider other lenses.

Either way, the 40mm pancake should be part of anyone's collection :P

I hope you understand that there is a big difference (both in function and quality) between the old 18-135mm and new 18-135mm STM?

Not "superior" auto focus, Continuous Auto Focus. you can only continuously AF while shooting video with STM lenses.

Now, if he doesn't intend on using Continuous AF..

My mistake. I've never actually used it but I was basing it off of what I remembered Roger saying:
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2...m-makeover

I just did a quick read and I guess it is a bit better than the 18-135. So yeah it could be ok depending on your use although the cool thing with DSLRs is being able to shoot in low light and on the long end 5.6 is very dark. Even my 24-105 doesn't let in enough light for most interior video I shoot and that's f/4.

I have a 5d mk2. Bought t4i for the heck of it since it is so cheap $599 . I am shooting indoor volleyball using mk2 and 70-200 f2.8 non is. Pictures came out great.
She has a tournament at a bigger location so I took the t4i with me. My logic is that I will get 1.6 of the range.
I m not a pro but I think the iQ is a little better with mk2. What make me want to buy fhe mk3 is the fast focus and frame rate of the t4i.
Please go on sale

This. I bought the mk2 after I was shooting with the T4i for a while. Everybody says that the autofocus on the mk2 is a non-issue. Well, it may not be, but with the T4i's 9 cross type focal points, it kind of felt like a difference. I'm not an expert to quantify it, but I could "feel" a little less pep with the mk2. Awesome image quality though. Guess that's what really matters. Sent the mk2 back and am looking for a kingpin.

funny thing is I saw a pop up for a 52 mm filter for only $250. Wow such a deal. :)

135 is nice. I hope you get it. I think it was in stock before things went south.

KnightRT 02-23-2013 09:11 PM

I can't vouch for the cart anymore, that doesn't work at all. But definitely nothing on the product pages.

DocMo 02-23-2013 09:11 PM

I'm wasting minutes of my life watching a circle spin on the screen. GG Canon, GG.

If it goes through there's a good chance it'll get shipped. Only heard of a few times that people ordered and it was canceled later.

brysoncj 02-23-2013 09:15 PM

I guess the good news is that I can easily enough buy a 135L for 800... which is only 50 bucks more than what I'm paying here... but still that $50 will haunt me as a Slickdealer.

is that new or used? 800 is a pretty good deal.

warmwxrules 02-23-2013 09:29 PM

I'm hiring Chinese hackers next time a sale comes around.

Dianoda 02-23-2013 09:31 PM

Well, I could have bought a 40mm f/2.8 STM for $136 after tax, but I'd rather pay the extra $15 to get a new lens with 1 year warranty. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with the lenses I already have (although there are definitely some great deals to be had, so congrats to everyone who got in). Thanks for the advance notice, OP!

Used... but in like new condition... i think 9 or 9+... like I said... it is a very niche market of people who are willing to throw down that kind of cash on a portrait lens.

T4i with STM vs 60D with IS lenses. Which one to get???
Thanks

KnightRT 02-23-2013 09:57 PM

Yeah, it's good now. My order went through for a 16-35. The price difference is not dramatic ( ~$150) relative to EBay (which usually includes the case and hood), but the 90-day warranty was persuasive. When I had the PRES2013 coupon applied, I though for a moment the discount would be 30%. I'd have bought a lot more.

paolo80 02-23-2013 09:59 PM

The T4i doesn't have a rear thumb dial. I'd buy a 60D unless movies are your highest priority.

Isn't that a slick sales trick? If you look at what's included it shows everything that normally comes with an L lens. So unless you want a redundant hood you're fine.

On the item page, you can click on the "what's in the box" button to confirm what's included. All the refurb L's I've bought included hoods/cases.

I think only for high end lenses but I may be wrong. My 24-105 and 70-200 II came with pouch and carrying cases respectively.

Yes, for the lenses that include them new, they're included with the refurbs as well - as are front/rear caps.

For some reason this isn't clearly listed on some lenses.

I don't know, but it always does that. I think I have seen other websites have the same question, but I don't recall which one specifically at the moment.

It's a great lens for a good price. You aren't going to find it for less in as good a condition as Canon refurbs generally are. The refurb L's I've bought from Canon direct have all either been basically brand new or had a few minor cosmetic blemishes on the casing, but the glass itself has always been flawless.

I always want a 16-35. I couldn't add it to my cart the first time and thought it was OOS, so I went with 135mm. Later, I was able to get the 16-35. So now I am stuck with both 16-35 and 135, which is what I haven't planned. :shake:

It's a valid point. A full-size DSLR and 70-200 f/2.8 can wear you down when shooting an all day event. I don't know what I'd do without blackrapid straps.

WI_photogal 02-23-2013 10:34 PM

Now to figure out how to fit the 135mm in my bag. Ah! The battery grip on the 5DMKII doesn't allow me to leave a lens on the camera in there... and I am already packed to the max in my fairly large backpack. Hm... oh well! I do know my lens arsenal is complete.

At that price, do it. I just picked up a couple for 2 different friends in the same boat. Very user-friendly and great quality. I don't regret it.
