How good is the text to speech feature? (I would use it for textbooks)

It's more like Siri. Automated voice that heeds to English punctuation and pronunciation. But no where near audiobook quality.

if its similar to Kindle Keyboard, I would say its not very useful.

I honestly don't think the higher resolution trumps the older version by that much, I hardly notice the difference from a borrowed Kindle keyboard with my Paperwhite.

Now, on tablets and computer monitors... yeah, you'll definitely notice higher res, but for ereaders, it's very subtle.

Why? You can just buy a micro-usb cable for a few bucks or something.

Yes. Unless they've changed it from the Kindle 2... you're not going to be surfing the web (probably) or playing movies, so they probably figured it was worth the minor expense to them so that you could buy books wherever you are.

You can only access Amazon.com store, wikipedia on 3G. On Kindle Keyboard you get some limit/month of full 3G browsing.

I use text to speech all the time. You get used to its imperfections quickly. It's nice to read and be read to at the same time. The "pages" turn with the speech conversion. I like my Touch overall. You do need a light source though and clip on lights can be awkward for some.

Kindle keyboard 3G was imposed with a 50MB per month limit last time I checked. The great thing is is that it's uncensored. If you are in a foreign country with censored internet, this will tunnel to let you access normally blocked websites.

WIll amazon alert you or automatically charge you if you go over the 3g limit on the touch/keyboard?

does anyone know if you can load books onto this straight from your comp, like books not bought through amazon? I have lots of epubs on my comp and I'm curious.

From what I understand, although the screen specs from the Keyboard (what I have) and the next generation are the same, the Keyboard versions got a higher binning so there is less quality variation. So the PaperWhite screen improvement should be more noticeable in comparison to the previous generation, but possibly not as much against the Keyboard.

I still hold on to both my keyboard models as the free 3G, even capped, is a great back-up email access when travelling. Hard to beat that feature for frequent international travelers!

e-ink is generally easier to read (especially outdoors), easier on your eyes and battery life is much greater for just reading.

Why Nook & Kindle better as a reader
 

Yep, been doing that for years on my Kindle and Nook. Have never purchased anything from their respective "stores" (but some of the Amazon freebies often posted on obesewallet are interesting).

Nook has a little better screen (but hardly worth talking about), and can be rooted to be an android tablet (which leaves the original functionality totally intact). But the free 3G, albeit slow and a testy browser on the Kindle, is nice at times.

There is no limit on the 3g, only what you can access with it.

Unless you listen to audiobooks, I prefer the non-touch version.

It's lighter and I actually like the physical buttons for page turning rather than tapping the screen.

Second this. Go for kindle 4 rather than touch. The physical botton is way better user friendly than the touch screen.

3G has NO value in this device and just hurts the battery life. I charge my kindle once a week max, and fyi, there's no reason why you should be browsing the web on an e-reader. I did it for fun (on wifi) and looked on facebook (and it's still pretty slow). Maybe to google, but we all have phones that do that. Checked some photos, just to see how it looks, and it's not a bad grayscale browser, but why? Why? Why would you need to check a website on your kindle? This is for READING. Kindle Fire is just another tablet. NEVER buy that. If you do, you're a noob.

Anyways, Cowboom, I would expect it to be around $40-45 shipped. Whoever thought $57 was a good price, was wrong. Why? Just get a new paperwhite for like $30 (slickdeal) more.

just keep refreshing and someone will let one drop out of their basket that has a cable. I was looking, none...refreshed a few times..two 5's showed up with cables.

cable is standard anyway, a lot of phones, ext hard drives, etc use the same one. i have one that shares psp, ext. hd and kindle.

Don't really get the whole kindle touch thing. I have a kindle keyboard and I don't think it is a hardship to use the keyboard for those times when I need to type something in. It was from Cowboom for $42 and it's 3G also. Overall though, I like the kindle a lot.

Yeah, it's just micro USB. I buy them off ebay for $1 each shipped from china. All our phones and my kindle are all micro usb. I've got cables on the computers and on the battery chargers for the phones. That's a sweet deal too, stand alone charger for a phone battery for $3 shipped from china. They have a plug in for a USB cable so they can charge a phone or a Kindke while they have a fully charged battery ready for that same phone or another phone. The kids just charge their phones overnight or they have the option to switch batteries if there isn't time to charge. And the whole thing was dirt cheap, the batteries are less than $4 shipped too. Anyway....

Bottom line is if you have an Android phone, you probably already have a kindle charger/cable

After owned kindle keyboard, kindle touch, and kindle paperwhite, I love the screen on the paperwhite, but really not a fan of using the touch screen to turn pages.

There are some 6's and some 5's with cables now. There are 118 pages so lots of choices.

I read comic books and magazines on my Kindle Keyboard and using the d-pad to zoom in is a pain. The Kindle Touch has pinch to zoom and will be better for that. Regular book reading will be fine on both, I don't really understand why pressing a button vs touching a screen to turn a page would make a difference. Plus the screen is supposed to be better on the touch vs the Keyboard, we'll see when it gets here. e-ink is e-ink.

I use the text-to-speech feature pretty much every day, and I love it. I use it for both non-fiction and fiction books.

It's one of the best computerized voices I've heard. I can listen to it for hours.

Not every book has the text-to-speech feature enabled, so you may want to make sure that your textbooks do before you buy.

You can browse other sites other than wikipedia/amazon. I've gone on other sites using my friend's kindle touch and have been able to look around(mainly on text heavy sites). It takes a while for images to load, but I wanted the kindle e-ink more as an online bedtime reader before I go to sleep (don't want blue light to keep me awake).

Also, when I said "3g" I meant the 50mb limit they set on the browser, sorry for not clarifying. I wasn't sure if amazon would bill people for exceeding 50 mb in the month after using their 3g too much.

Is there a way to check the bandwidth usage on your kindle?
