Reviews don't seem so bad on Amazon and other sites. Biggest factor seems to be if your refurb was done properly or not.

Granted, this is not high end by any means, but for free after MIR (I have Shoprunner) it seems worth a shot. I need a replacement clock radio anyway.

Thanks OP.

Can someone please tell me how it could make economic sense to "refurbish" an alarm clock? Is someone really shipping these to China for rural workers to "refurbish"? That seems nuts.

Personally, I was looking for a very simple alarm clock (when it comes to alarm clocks, the simpler the better!) with big numbers. This seems to fit the bill. And the price is obviously right.

THE LED INDICATES NEED FOR CHARGING WILL INCLUDE THE VIDEO CAPTURED ON NEXT TIME. I ACTUALLY ORDER ONE MORE MONTH LATER FOR 13 YEAR OLD.THE SECOND ONE STILL IN UNOPENED BOX. WILL WRITE HOW WELL THE SECOND ONE WORKS.
ALL THESE YEAR I BUY THINS FROM NEWEGG WORKED GREAT RIGHT OUT OF BOX.
I like how this 5 star review isn't even about a clock. I tempted but will pass.

jmuscle 02-22-2013 12:18 PM

It doesnt work. At first it was very annoying to set every time it would give me the wrong time. Then mine just started showing 88:88 I cudnt tell the time at all. then I called newegg then they advise me there is nothing they can do and told me to call the manufacturer. The manufacturer said if its refurbished through 3rd party they cannot do anything but if it was bought new you can ship it to them at your own cost and attach your invoice and reason why it doesn t work and a 10.00 check or money order which wasnt worth it for me so I just threw it out. I just use my iphone app alarm clock I gave up on the clock

Chances are there is one thing that fails in this alarm clock. They probably collected all the returned ones and had someone stateside quickly fix them (solder or glue something) and then box them up again. But even then, I agree, profit margins must have been really slim.

So, what you are saying is that you spent $400 - $800 on a smart phone to use as alarm clock?

Can a dumb phone work as alarm clock? Most can.

Can $10 alarm clock work as alarm clock, sure it can.

Does everyone keep their phone by their bed? Probably not. Our phones are in a charging cradle in the kitchen at night. If there is an emergency they will call the house phone.

chong67 02-22-2013 12:23 PM

I got a smartphone because I like to surf and do tether on it.

A refurb just means it was returned to the manufacturer for any reason and a tech looked it over to make sure it worked. Refurbs are not usually repaired.

And Emerson is an American company, right? At least they used to be.

I had one of their alarm clocks years ago that never worked right with the music and sound. It's collecting dust in my garage somewhere now.

I am no expert but I tend to think that these are just overstocked items which never sold (given the brand reputation) and will never sell at the list price. Since there are many problems advertising them way below the list price, they mark them as refursbished.

huahenryyan 02-22-2013 12:56 PM

xxxHolic 02-22-2013 01:12 PM

Radio is terrible. Speaker is worse than a cell phone. It sounds like it is coming from an empty barrel.
Analog tuner is difficult to get it on station. Then when the radio comes on again, it has drifted off frequency.

ive had this alarm clock radio for a couple of weeks and it is keeping time correctly.

since it is refurbished it does not come with the quarter sized 2032 battery.

tuning in a radio station is a bit awkward.

even on low the blue LED will light up a bedroom.

the alarm gradually gets louder.

outer enclosure has some minor scratches so if you are that anal this is not for you.

Nice try being snarky. But we'll be using this clock just to conveniently look at time, not solely for the alarm. You know, without having to look for your smart phone and keep pressing the home key to check on the time.

Refurb Newegg products have a white sticker (aka upc) along the plastic wrapper. Some people overlook this. I have done a lot of refurb newegg rebate and they got paid.

There is a physiological reason for that. Red is much better for a bedside clock than blue or green light.

TDMVP73 02-22-2013 05:00 PM

Well... the deal alerts didn't come through for me on this one.

The white sticker normally has a UPC bar in it. My last newegg refurb was the Logitech H150 and it does have UPC, according to my file.

veryseablue 02-26-2013 07:11 PM

Hi , received mine today, What a piece of junk. I know that the cr2032 battery is not included, but fortunately I have spare battery to go with it. Inserted the battery and followed instruction to reset the time. Asks to press the time and month/date button together in order to set the year, After pressing the two buttons, the year shows 2008, Follow the manual to press set ( up) button to set to current year, but nothing happened, no matter how hard you press the set button, the year is still showed, 2008. There is either no smartset function or it 's broken. Wasted 2 hours of my life, but nothing works. This is really like a product made 20 years ago. Just pure crap.

Anyone have the same experience like me. Or I am the only unlucky one. Also if this can be returned for refund without paying shipping. Thanks for any input.

I ordered two. One was DOA (the LCD was having gibberish numbers & very low lighting.)

The second one was fine. I haven't read the instructions yet but I played with the buttons and tested them out. "SmartSet" didn't work for me. I had to manually set my time zone (it's number is indicated on the small paper in the box.) And I had to hold down both the "time" & "month" button to set the year manually with the Arrow Keys.

I haven't figured out what the "mode" button does yet but I'll read the manual after dinner.

The radio tuning on the side seemed to be like 0.3 FM off of the exact station I wanted but it works fine despite the display inaccuracy.

The dimmer switch worked for low & bright LCD lighting and the alarms went off while I was adjusting the time. (So I'm going to assume the alarms work fine for now. They're still stuck at 8:00 AM defaults at the moment and I haven't messed with them.)

From what I can tell, if your clock has a strong & bright LCD lighting, the clock should be functional & non-DOA. The only problem even with a working clock, setting the time doesn't allow you to individually change the hours or minutes quickly: you have to slowly hold down the button and wait for it to spin through each and every AM & PM hour+minute. My watch has a better interface and it doesn't use quite so many buttons.

The warranty is 30 days so good luck with yours. I'm planning on contacting the manufacturer and if they can't help me, seeing what Newegg says about my dud unit.

Thanks for the reply. I have read some reviews both on Newegg and Amazon. A lot of people complain about the quality and seems that the customer service for this product is pretty poor. I believe you have to pay shipping to ship it for repair, which is not worthwhile. As for mine, the Smartset is not working , even with a battery in place. The worst is that I can not even set the time to make it a time piece. The best bet is to contact Newegg, according to my previous experience with them, they are good at solving problems. This is simply defective products after all.

that is not the correct UPC to submit for the rebate although it has the same numbers as the real UPC.

the correct UPC is the square one.

Thanks and repped

Repped you , too

I received my clock yesterday. It has the same exact problems that yours does. :(

Plus I found this under Newegg's Return FAQs http://help.newegg.com/app/answer.../related/1

It states that purchases made with Shoprunner has free returns and it gives the steps necessary to ship it back!

Sorry to hear that. What are you going to do with it?

tandt14 02-27-2013 06:00 AM

I'm going to return it. It's worthless to me if it doesn't work correctly. I have the original version of this clock and it has been very good over the past 4+ years. I wanted an updated version with the automatic DST time change corrected.

But... it was free.... you're retuning it when it was free? I'm confused!

tandt14 02-27-2013 12:50 PM

Technically, it isn't free until I get the rebate. It isn't worth the hassle of filing and waiting for the rebate from Newegg. Free to return...so back it goes.

The square label with two barcodes contains the UPC. The UPC barcode should look like this [wolframalpha.com].

aro123 02-27-2013 05:18 PM

can you send in two rebates in 1 envelope?

Add the item twice when you fill out the online form. Print the page it gives you once. Attach both UPCs where indicated. Since you only have one form to mail you will only need one envelope. If you also purchased any other items with rebates, those must be mailed separately.

Seems DOA for me. Alarm does not sound. Display works, so it's only a clock now, not an alarm clock.

cyberchic 02-27-2013 09:05 PM

the time zone was working for a while....now i can't set up/down...just stuck at zone 7....
as long as the radio and clock works, i'm ok with it...too much trouble returning it....it's free anyways,,,hopefully i get the rebate

On the left side, there is a switch for the alarms (1 and 2 plus LCD dimmer) and you can switch it to off, radio or buzz. Check if it is off. If not, then it's DOA.

Yep, I tried them both at buzzer and radio. Neither worked. I also tried just turning on the radio, that didn't work either. Contacted NE and they say they'll credit me with a gift card.

So with a gift card credit, do you still qualify for the rebate ?

TONNAZ 02-28-2013 09:28 AM

Lucky enough to have mine to work. Just sent out the rebate form with the square UPC label attached.

Came without a CR2032 battery, hence the red blinking light. Tested with a fresh battery from a recent slickdeal battery deal ($2 for 5 pieces of CR2032). So far so good.

I have the same problem. what do you think we should do?

stailcookie 03-01-2013 03:09 PM

Got mine. Any way to make it stop flashing that the battery is dead?

NVM, Electrical tape covers it alright.

If you were taling about the low battery indicator flashing, that's because there is no battery in it. You need 1 CR2032 cell battery.

Even if I have one, tape is a cheaper investment for a free (-stamp for rebate form) clock. I actually like it. Large digits that can be dimmed. All the extras can be turned off. The first digital I've had that wasn't red or invisible without a backlight. I had been considering tossing $15+ for something similar to this for quite a while now.

8ajula 03-02-2013 06:38 AM

Got mine yesterday. It's pretty good, actually. Except for the speakers, but nobody was expecting superb sound from this. Everything else seems to be working properly.

It even remembers the time after unplugging it for several minutes, even without a battery.

xcmiler 03-03-2013 09:13 AM

Anyone else not receive a packing slip or receipt in their box? Are you just going to print out the email confirmation and send that in?

going to try these. did not open it yet.

tighten transformer screws (the guy sitting on red pad if you look the clock from the bottom)
change the capacitors if there are any.

mine came with broken alarm2 switch - free floating. i opened and found something broken near the switch and pieces fallen inside the clock. i talked for warranty service repair but they won't pay shipping to them. i think best to use as clock rather spend money on this.

noogin 03-11-2013 09:33 AM

Clock wasn't keeping time correctly... contacted newegg via chat and they offered to send a replacement free, without having me return the old one... note i have shoprunner

noogin 03-11-2013 09:37 AM

Nevermind... giving me a refund without having me to return it since they dont have it in stock anymore

Hellyea 04-27-2013 04:15 PM

Got my (2) rebate cards today. Clocks and alarms work well for me.

The image attached to that post is the wrong one, although there is a decent chance they will take it. The correct one is the square label with two barcodes. Just send in both stickers to be safe.

Just tried to check my rebate status (using the promotion #46448) and the rebate doesn't show up at all. Now I don't know if I'll even get the rebate. Looks shady, anybody have any issues getting their rebates?

Enter your tracking number or contact info into the status page [rebateaccess.com], not the promotion number into the registration page.
