Memorex 98839 External 12X Blu-Ray Writer (USB 3.0) -$69.99 (reg. $150/no rebates)

1 Attachment(s)
TigerDirect has the Memorex 98839 external blu-ray on sale for $70. I went and picked one up yesterday. Great price for an external blu-ray writer. They had just got their shipment in and had a lot available (Naperville, IL).

IMO, great price for an external Blu-ray burner. :)

From the description, it says it comes with software to write. I'm not sure about reading. That's what I'm wondering as well.

For a Mac you need to get separate software as blu-ray is not supported natively. It comes with software but it is for PC only. Just google blu-ray and Mac software and you'll find easily what you need.

FWIW I have a Mac and this works perfectly.

slickeagle 02-24-2013 03:19 PM

It's also on Amazon by Tiger Direct for the same price. Shipping is a few dimes lower. LINK [amazon.com]

Any deal on blank discs?
Thanks OP. Repped!

This software that you have, does it play Blu-rays fine? I have iMovie and Final Cut Pro, I wonder if it can write to Blu-Ray...

Also, what's the software called?

Every single external optical drive (excluding the portables) I've owned in the last decade has either been designed to stay vertical (in other words, they tell you performance improved by standing vertical), or at least came with a stand to choose the orientation. The whole idea is that vertical orientation will allow you to save on desk space. And obviously putting heavy objects on top of an optical drive (assuming laid flat) can be a bad idea.

right, and thats why this design sucks. the others give you the option, this forces vertical. im prochoice. :lmao:

edit: looks like it can be removed yay, see everyone wins!

mtamedeo 02-24-2013 06:04 PM

I have mine laying horizontal. I believe it is meant to go either or.

As for software, there are a few that you can use. VLC is good. Here is an article on the issue:

http://www.tuaw.com/2013/01/30/re...e-for-mac/

You can use Toast to write to the disc but I only got mine to watch....

does it lay flat? looks like the bottom part is wider than the top, can it be removed?

No, you're making an assumption here--the stand is REMOVABLE. A review I've checked confirms as much.

Obviously. It would be an idiotic design otherwise. I've owned more than a dozen of these things (various makes/models) in the past, and they've always been removable.

I hear ya... And it does appear that this drives "goes both ways" per this excerpt from one of the reviews:
"[...]It comes with a stand that allows you to vertically orient the drive to minimize the desktop footprint; however, it does take a little bit of oomph to get the stand attached to the unit.[...]"

So as I said, it appears to "go both ways"... but one way requires a little more effort and patience... which would be expected.

 :worship:

The Asus one's I've purchased tend to favor the vertical orientation, but the Samsung and LG ones don't (Samsung Example #1 [newegg.com]) and LG Example #1 [newegg.com])

I don't care about saving desk space. It's not like an portable external drive is that big in the first place. This one's full size, so its probably double the thickness of the one's I've been using.

I wonder if it actually achieves 12x speeds. I guess we'll never know because almost all BD-R media is 6x compatible anyways.

"The drive came bundled with Cyber-Link Media Suite 8, which includes Power DVD 10. I've had no problem using it to play Blu-Ray movies on my computer."

according to a review on amzon.com

i hate how circuitcity and compusa websites merged with tiger direct... used to be replicated deals on those websites, but now that they're all TD, there is no way around sales tax in texas =(

I just got some of these and after much searching it seems to be a LiteOn drive rebadged with the Memorex name. It is most likely a Liteon iHBS212 model.

Clues to the LiteOn identity:

Faceplate is the same except it says Memorex instead of LiteOn.
Eject button same size, shape and location as the LiteOn.
Eject HOLE is in the same location (you have to pull down the front cover to see the eject hole!)
8 MB buffer (LiteOn is about the only company to use that size buffer....the others use 2 or 4 MB.
Firmware numbering scheme is very similar to LiteOn's.

The firmware has been modified so it reports the drive as a Memorex in Nero, ImageBurn, etc. Bummer because it makes it a pain to upgrade the firmware to LiteOn's latest.

The software is Cyberlink with PowerDVD 10. I had to download a 6.5 MB update to get it to play MI: Ghost Protocol but after the update it played the movie with no problems.

I also did 2 test writes (BD Movies) with a Verbatim 6x LTH disk and an Optical Quantum 4x disk using ImageBurn. Both disks were written and verified with no errors. Both movies played with no problems in my Panasonic DMP-BD85 player.

I don't want to open the case (yet) because there is a "Warranty void if broken" sticker on the case where it would have to pried apart which would break the stupid sticker!

$69.99 is a good price for an external BD writer with USB 3 but I pushed the envelope and went to a local Staples that had 2 of the same drive on clearance for $136.50 each. I spoke to the manager and asked for a price match to TigerDirect's price (showed a printout of their web page since it's not in their local ad this week). No problem and I was able to use the 20% off coupon!! Out the door with 2 drives for $119.82 ($59.91 each including tax)!

That's pretty close to a SD in my book!

Hope all this helps.

P.S.: The Staples PM and coupon will be strictly YMWV!

BTW: Lightscribe appears to be supported but I haven't tried that feature.

jsjunks 03-05-2013 12:34 PM

The price went up to 79.99 on both Tigerdirect and Amazon and there is a shipping charge on both the sites (even for AMAZON primes). But the same is available on tigerdirect store in ebay for 69.99 with free shipping! for interested parties, here is the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/230925178897

1. Can blue-ray write or usable for data backup purposes?
2. if so, how many GB's per blue-ray can write per disc?
3. What is the cheapest current market price for blue-ray blank disc per GB? is it cheaper than HDD?

thanks in advance....

1. Yes, BD-R and BD-RW are the equivalent of CD-R and CD-RW and DVD-R and DVD-RW as long as you have the appropriate burner.
2. 25 GB per disc layer.
3. Searching "BD-R" on slickdeals, it looks like they range in price from less than $.50 per 25GB disc to more than $2 per disc, depending on available coupons or rebates.
