Had anyone purchased from this guy "Johnnys-General-Electronics" before???
For a $10 of savings compared to legit sellers like newegg it may not worth the risk |

I picked this up a month ago. Really liked the form factor and was looking for something to grab for quick meetings without paying Ultrabook, MacAir prices. I'm also a Linux geek and you can boot a version of Ubuntu off of a SD card. Originally, I thought this was great as I could install java (missing on Chrome OS) and maybe Office apps in some form.
Once I got into though I found a couple of gotchas (for me). The ARM version of java is still hard to deal with and running Office apps or a VM on a non-Intel processor was a no go. I ended up giving the Samsung away and picked up a Acer C7 for $199 and bumped the RAM to 8GB and replace the HD with a 120GB SSD (voids warranty though). Now I dual boot ChromeOS and Chrubuntu and in Chrubuntu can run Office apps under Wine and Windows under VMware. The Celeron 847 and NM10 chipset does a pretty good job for what they are. Just my experience for those interested in the Samsung. I liked it a lot, just didn't do what I needed. |
just 10$ cheaper than amazon. Why would I buy it from ebay?

This is only $10 more at amazon and newegg although tax or shipping may trip you up. Good reviews on those sites:

I'm mainly interested in using this to backup large amounts of data. Like copying videos from a drive. |

With 3% cashback using Chase Amazon, the difference is only about 2 dollars |
Wish Netflix would hurry up and make an ARM compatible version for this particular Chromebook. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is the same chip in the Nexus 10, which afaik has never had an issue playing Netflix, so why its taking so long for Chromebook I don't know.

Using this right now. Its an amazing piece of tech or under $250. Its a good 2nd or 3rd computer, but can not substitute a windows machine 100%. (especially if you need to print).

Are you kidding me? Good luck if you wind up with a lemon if you buy from "Johnny-Fell-Off-The-Truck-Electronics" on eBay. Stupid to buy this from eBay. Simple, no? |

I see no advantage to this over just buying from a reputable dealer for $10 more.
On second thought, I see no advantage to that either. |

It's a great little device as long as you know what to expect. It's not quite "just a browser" as many people are quick to say but the offline capabilities are pretty limited. You can view videos, listen to music (not sure about what formats of each are supported though I haven't run into an issue yet) and view photos and even do some light editing. Google Docs work offline and there are many offline capable apps in the chrome store. Many of the online only "apps" I've tried from the store are really just shortcuts to load webpages which is a bit of a bummer. This has already been pointed out by a few folks, but Netflix doesn't work yet but Google is working with them on the issue. In the meantime, Amazon VOD and Hulu work for sure, not sure about other streaming services. I found another glitch with eBay that will prevent you from creating a listing because of the interface they use to add photos.
Overall, though, it's a great device (nice looking, too) that does what it's supposed to very well. For the vast majority of people, it will definitely not suffice as your only device, but it's perfect for me since it's just my web browsing/mobile computer and my meaty desktop is for gaming and lets me do all the things Windows allows that ChromeOS doesn't (DoD CAC support is a huge one for me). The 100GB of Google Drive storage for 2 years is awesome, though! Quick note on battery life: I get about 6 hours on a charge doing general web browsing or reading documents. Streaming an online video while outputting over HDMI gets more like 3 hours, maybe even slightly less. For the people who asked about expanding storage: according to Google, if you swap the 16GB SSD out for a larger SSD, the OS will no longer accept updates as it would normally. Looking at the hardware, I don't even see how you would/could do it. Your best options are the SD card slot and the USB ports. I haven't used it with a USB HDD but it works fine with thumb drives. |
slickdealers are pretty cheap and pissy nerds.

Just to reiterate what others are saying.... make sure you know what you are buying before you get into a Chromebook.
Personally I feel most people would do better with a tablet around the house for browsing, email or media. For business you need a full power laptop. The only place I find a Chromebook really shines is if you need something to type on with good connectivity and battery life. |
Just grabbed this from a retail shop. it was only $10 more than this deal, plus I could return it if I didn't like it. Boot-up is as fast as my gaming rig running an 840pro. The operation system is very efficient, and the dual-core Exynos 5 runs it very smoothly so far. This is the same CPU in the Nexus 10, and the Nexus 10 runs smoothly even at a very high resolution.
I haven't tried the Chrome Remote Desktop yet, but this was something I'm planning to use a lot, since my kids can be on their Chromebooks and will be streaming powerful games that most laptops even over $500 wouldn't run. What I didn't like so far, is that it doesn't support apps from Google Play like a tablet or phone, BUT on the plus side, phones or tablets doesn't have full flash like the Chromebook! |

I got my Samsung Chromebook for $140 from cowboom, refurbished though. It's a very good machine IF you keep in mind what it was designed to do. This is a minimalist operating system. Most everything runs through Chrome, but there are a few Chrome OS apps like a video player, calculator, Google hangout, etc. Very few Chrome apps are available right now through the Chrome store, but it's still early in the life of Chrome OS.
If you want a device to browse the internet, or do online work, then this is the device for you. The battery life is unmatched, and it is small and light and boots up in seconds. It has replaced my iPad. |
i highly recommend buying from trusted sources like amazon. there are a lot of defects out there and you may need to return. some of these chromebooks just freeze up a lot.

Once again, slickdeals rating baffles me. Somebody posts this from Amazon at $249, and it gets all thumbs down. |

DEAD. Bastage raised the price to $299.99, which is idiotic considering that's $50 more than what other retailers sell it for. He probably saw a bunch of orders come in (most likely SD'ers) and thought he could get away with some price gouging. Think again, Johnny.
