About how long are Newegg rebates taking? I haven't done any in a while after doing 2 that took 3 months. It may be worth the wait though for the $10GC.

Ah, no problem I actually happened to wake up at 3AM EST today...so many FAR items

ls1_01 02-26-2013 04:31 AM

Is it still one rebate per year per unique product with them or one rebate per year for any of their products? I.E.doesn't matter if it is Internet security total protection or antivirus & does the number of users make a difference?

nJoy7 02-26-2013 05:10 AM

So they're paying people to use this software. IMO, they aren't paying enough.

Some/most do, yes.

A Norton 360-esque product [comcast.com]is free for Comcast customers.

TheEdge 02-26-2013 06:09 AM

If I didn't already do the McAfee throwaway to get Malwarebytes earlier this year, I'd be all over this. It was the same product. :(

From what I understand, if it's the same UPC/product, it's limit one per year.

I already did the McAfee thing (but it's the 3-PC license); anyone know if that will count as the same product, since this is the 1-PC license?

(I'd never use McAfee, but this is basically $10MM...)

Since it's a different UPC, it's considered a different product. You should be okay.

I think that's why people say "per year" as in "calendar year".

EDIT: I Think I see what you mean.

Technically, somebody MIGHT be able to buy the 2012 version of a product in late 2012 and also early 2013 and then turn right back around and buy a 2013 version. So they'd have three rebates of essentially the same product in just the span of as little as a few days (assuming rebates were available for all products).

Understood. I just didn't want people thinking that if they'd submitted a rebate for McAfee 2013, they'd have to wait a full year (365 days) before they'd be eligible to submit a rebate for McAfee 2014.

1) That's correct. Can't do the same UPC twice, even if they're different offer numbers. I believe with Norton you CAN do the same UPC with different offer numbers.

2) Yes, less than a week ago here:

Just curious: Are there any tangible benefits to Winzip 17 over its free rivals (e.g. 7-Zip)? I'm wondering what would justify it having a $30 price tag for a standard (i.e. not a "Pro") license.

Edit: Also, do the promotional gift cards part of these deals expire as do there "Customer Care" gift cards?

openupyoureyes 02-26-2013 10:19 AM

If I have free returns with shoprunner, can't I just return the software and not even bother with the rebate? or will newegg cancel the gift card? I'll try to find the gift card terms somewhere.

NOT AN OPTION, HERE ARE THE PROMOTIONAL GIFT CARD TERMS ABOUT RETURNING AN ITEM EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER USING THE PROMOTIONAL GIFT CARD FOR ANOTHER PURCHASE:

If you receive a Promotional Gift Card in connection with your purchase of an item, your Promotional Gift Card will be voided if you subsequently return that item to Newegg for a refund.

Please note: Newegg reserves the right to block the customer account of any customer who repeatedly seeks to return an item (for which a Promotional Gift Card was issued when the item was purchased), for a refund after first using that Promotional Gift Card toward the purchase of a different item.

Sure you can. The thing's an utter resource hog and after it expires it'll send you popups every day or so with YOUR COMPUTER IS AT RISK!!?!!!!! until you completely uninstall the damn thing. On my ~3 year old laptop when it ran a full virus scan the computer slowed down so much that you literally *couldn't* do anything else. I wouldn't touch McAfee with a 10' pole right now...

LOL..I couldn't agree more about the part when you have this crap installed thinking your system is safe while all the time some trojan/malware is slowly taking it over.

In this case, hopefully the actual cost will be $0 after the rebate and I get a $10 gift card.
I'll mostly gift this to someone:lol: or will install it on my older laptop where its a given that the OS be re installed every other month.

To your point..yes please don't use this expecting it to keep your system safe from even mid level threats.

The way most rebates work is, they just need to be different offer numbers in order to be eligible. So if thats a different offer number(it would have to be) im sure its fine.

I think what he's asking is "can the rebate amount exceed the amount paid"? Some rebates will only pay you UP TO what you paid. Now, that being said, most people would consider a gift card a form of payment, but the rebate processor folks might think otherwise.

I've heard from multiple McAfee rebate "veterans" that it's limit one per UPC (product) per calendar year, not limit one per offer number.

Except a gift card is a form of payment..... Just like when you buy something entirely with a giftcard, you dont really think the rebate company is going to go "oh, they used a gift card, that doesnt count, denied!" do you? Ive been doing this for 15 years, and thousands of rebates, ive never been denied for using a gift card.... What rebate processor folks are you talking about? Speculating? Save the speculation please....

That would be dumb, but maybe Mcafee is a terrible company. I dont buy Mcafee products so, if thats true, thats sad. It would be the first rebate company ive heard of that operated like that.

I'm not saying he would get totally denied, just that they would POTENTIALLY issue him for a rebate for the amount he paid out of pocket (i.e. cash/charge/paypal) but not for the gift card amount. I doubt that they would even do that, but I think that is all he was asking. Not whether or not he would get denied, but if he would get only up to what he paid out of "pocket". Again, some rebates specifically say "rebate amount not to exceed payment amount". You and I and 99% of the people would agree that a gift card is a form of payment, but...I was simply trying to clarify what I believe he was asking you.

If their customer service is half as bad as their product, you shouldn't be surprised.

A post in this very thread supports my understanding of their rebate policy.

I would have to say Newegg.com would go there. I don't understand why they would need that since in step 1 it is said to be purchased from newegg.com only. Just a cut and paste generic form they all use for rebates I guess.

One is Norton, one is McAfee. Unless you've done the exact same McAfee product this year (Antivirus Plus 2013 1-user), you should be able to do both as separate rebates. Norton fine print says limit one per person per offer, but with the recent uptick in rebates being denied in the audit process, theories abound that they are going after frequent Norton rebaters and/or they've just made it up in their mind that it is now limit one product per person.

w777w 02-26-2013 09:08 PM

Was looking to jump on FAR Symantec's NIS, but after reading about the issues that other people have decided against it. And this new disclaimer on the rebate form:
"Symantec reserves the right to deny rebate requests if excessive requests are submitted per customer or household or if other factors indicate a violation of these terms and conditions."
Seems like Newegg would not even try to help you if you have issues with the rebate. At least, Fry's would try to help. Pass and thumbs down for poor merchant reputation

A total general question, aimed at no one in particular. Do FAR deals for McAfee and/or Norton tend to follow any kind of seasonal or yearly trends?

The reason I ask is because there's 3 months left on my current Norton subscription (i.e. expires May 2013). I've bought both this and the 3 user total protection just because they're money makers. I'd PREFER Norton 360, but will only install it in May if I can get it FAR between now and then (otherwise will install McAfee Total Protection).

Behave 02-27-2013 09:07 AM

Do they email the $10 gift card or is it included with the software?

I don't think it's seasonal, they pretty much have IS / 360 all year around. Usually it cycles between IS / AV / All-in-one products. I'd say there's a good chance that 360 will be FAR from now until May, especially between NewEgg and Frys.com. Frys usually requires 2 rebates to be submitted, regular and upgrade. It's pretty easy to qualify for the upgrade rebate, esp since you've got McAfee to qualify. Just add a deal alert for "Norton" and you'll get notification.

Never done a Deal Alert before but just did my first one. Thanks/repped for the helpful suggestion.

Regardless of anything else, McAfee's current offering is WORSE than most of the freeware antivirus out there.

If you're going to buy one, get ESET, Trend, Bitdefender or Kaspersky.

If you want Free, go with Avast or AVG.

NO! McAfee is terrible! Only thing worse is Microsoft's product.

Sorry the link didn't work for you.
It's the support FAQ on gift card expirations.

It is indeed 1 year.

www.av-comparatives.org/
AV-Comparatives provides independent and unbiased statistics for most major antivirus products.
You can check out all of the statistics for McAfee if you want to see how it actually performs.

I contacted Newegg and they said just go ahead and mail it.
But I'm slightly concerned. Did anyone find where to contact McAfee?

BTW I'm surprised not many seem to care in this thread.

When newegg did the Total Protection 3-User + $10 promo card last week, pre-registration wasn't live until 4-5 days later. Most are probably assuming the same thing wil happen with this one.

I see. Thanks for letting me know.
I got a reply from McAfee saying they're still setting up the rebate
and to check back again in 24 hours, so I will see.

That's just weird. I haven't kept up with the security news, but last time I checked Security Essentials was doing really decent since it didn't bog down the system and got some decent detection.

Do we get the promotional credit directly to our accounts, or is there a code that we will need to use?

I haven't bought this (dipped in the deal w. free Malwarebyte) but if it gives anyone comfort, the McAfee Total Protection rebate form was available online about a week after the deal was posted.

Just take a while for them to post it and I'm sure it will be well ahead of the rebate's deadline.

Anybody noticed the rebate pdf and online registration version is "1 user", and the product and invoice we got is "1 pc" ?

Is that a problem?

They e-mail you a code and 4-digit pin four days after your purchase is completed.

"The same" mean I got the wrong pdf file or product? Or the "1 pc" product is same with the "1 user" product?

On the rebate web site, when you chose product, it show up as two kind products.

1 pc is the definition of 1 user.... heh. It wouldnt matter anyways, the upc code is what they look for, not the friggin name of it.
