And that had 1 year warranty vs this deal has 90 days warranty.

Good deal nonetheless.

good start kit for a beginner learning manual controls? was researching 4/3's and other aps-c compacts but this price is kinda awesome

tempted to sell my t3 and get this to save a few bucks. My boss is a huge Nikon lens collector, so I'd be buying this just to use some glass normally out of my price range. Not sure if the camera itself is better than the Canon.

Prince01 02-26-2013 08:33 AM

Good deal, I bought the D5100 with Cameta Camera in a deal and my friend at that time asked me to wait for few more months so that the price would come down further, its almost been a year and I have never seen a deal on D5100 not even close to what I got it in for. The camera is really awesome.
This one is little bit run down version of D5100 but still great entry level SLR for this price I would jump if I don't have D5100 already.
Beside that I have not see lots of deal for Nikon cameras as compare to Canon cameras and lenses.

Wow, lucky you! Do it man, always go for the lens availability. The lenses cost more, and they affect the photos more than the body.

Oh yea, and the D3100 is definitely better than the Canon T3 anyway. Partially IMO of course.

Keeping and eye on D5100, but this is a good price!

The deal you posted is Body only. The one being discussed here includes 18-55 lens. Cannot compare.

This is a very good entry level DSLR camera. Some of the cheaper Sony DSLR's are also good entry level cameras - a drop more user friendly with their "on-screen" tips. My first one was the Alpha a330.

I was lucky enough to get in on this deal from Staples. Probably the first YMMV deal that worked for me.

FYI... there are some really good deals on Nikon lenses going on now. I don't see these deals too often so now is probably the time to jump on. I'm not sure when these lens deals end ...

I was holding out on grabbing the T3i at $475 refurbished from Canon. Did a quick search and it doesn't seem like this is THAT BAD compared to the T3i, would you agree?

I would mainly be using it for these reasons:
-Vlog
-Portrait shooting
-General video (parties, etc.)
-No sports
-General scenery

Basic usage, nothing professional, but I want DSLR quality @ a low price (oxymoron maybe lol)

Thanks for the info. I went to check out to see final price and saw I had a chunk of change on my paypal account (like randomly finding money on washed jeans right?) and ended up getting it.

Reading my photography books will be more enjoyable now that I have something to practice on.

Thanks OP!

Which staples in NY were you able to nab a sexy deal like that? Congrats!

Neecy 02-26-2013 09:28 AM

This is a great price and it's good to note that it's refurbished by Nikon. I got a Nikon refurbished D5000 last year and it had less than 300 shutter actuations. Looked brand new.

Yes, saw that deal, still deciding which one to get 35mm or 50mm, 35mm is not really a deal but 50mm is having good savings.
Which one would be better.

I'm not as "DSLR smart" as a lot of people here so I can't give you a sophisticated explanation , but everyone I asked told me to go with the 35mm. I'm extremely happy with it.

parrot123 02-26-2013 09:50 AM

I hit the button. One thing I noticed is that the description says Returns: 30 days money back or item exchange, buyer pays return shipping

But when you go down it says

Item Includes:
Nikon D3100 14.2 Megapixels Digital SLR Camera - 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor Lens - EN-EL14 Battery - MH-24 Battery Charger - DK-5 Eyepiece Cap - DK-20 Rubber Eyecap - Camera Strap - BS-1 Accessory Shoe Cover - BF-1B Body Cap - ViewNX 2 CD-ROM - Nikon 90 Day Warranty

Is it 90 days or 30 days that's applicable.

kmoff77 02-26-2013 09:52 AM

it it worth upgrading to this from a D3000?

willo13b 02-26-2013 09:52 AM

its 30 for return (refund or exchange)

90 for repairs with Nikon

I think....

edit: just to add that i've bought refurb from adorama before and never had a problem with the items

I think, 30days is the return window and 90days is Mfg warranty. You have to be little careful here. If something is wrong, you end up paying shipping for returning the item. Most of the retailers pay for the shipping in case of returns / exchanges.

I'm wondering if Adorama VIP extended warranty is applicable if we got this via Ebay.

What would be a good deal on a good compliment lens for this?

The 35mm AF-S F/1.8 DX lens will be a great one to have. If you are taking lots of indoor picture and video (which I do, mostly picture of my kids), then the F/1.8 aperture will give you plenty of light exposure without using flash (you can't use flash while shooting video at all).

This prime lens usually goes for around $160 used or $190 new.

wfumike 02-26-2013 10:02 AM

And for a beginner should I jump on this or wait for a t3i deal toto come arouN?A

It's not. I was going to buy a refurb item from them on eBay (had some ebay $) but I wanted to take advantage of the VIP warranty.

When I contacted them I was told only if it's from the web site direct. But it does work on refurbished items though.

Depends on what you plan to shoot.

If you want to take picture of actions, moving targets (kids, sports), I will go with Nikon. Their auto-focus are years ahead of Canon. You will find more picture focused on your kids' face rather than hands.

If you want to shoot landscape pictures, pictures of non-moving target. I will go with Canon.

Personally, I have Nikon. Nikon's DX camera sensor is a little bigger than Canon. That's why Nikon's lens has a 1.5 crop factor, but Canon is 1.6. Also Nikon's metering is 3D color metering. Canon is black and white.

As NES_Jackal said the 35mm is an excellent lens. It's the first lens I bought for my Nikon.

If you could afford it the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR II Lens is awesome. I got it recently myself during the current sale. It's now sub $600 and normally is $800+.
http://www.adorama.com/NK18200DXNUV.html

If you have the 35mm and the 18-200mm you should be set for a while. I'm still kind of new to the DSLR game myself and this is the collection I have. It will be quite a while before I'm ready for more lenses.

I had a chat, but he kept saying to buy from the website directly. So may be you're correct. Will call CS to confirm.

Anyway, pulled the trigger. Tossing the kit lens will make the body ~$250-$225.

truzoom 02-26-2013 10:41 AM

Seems like a great price for a "backup" DSLR that you can toss around as a better option than a point and shoot.

You could leave it in the car during mild months and have it ready to snap high speed photos that your smartphone would turn into a blurry mess.

Requisite 02-26-2013 10:46 AM

For only $300...I say, what the hell! I'm going to take the plunge & buy this one.

Officially my first DSLR! :D

wfumike 02-26-2013 10:47 AM

i saw something that the lens' on nikons on generally more expensive than the canons, either beginner or pro, not much intermediate. making me think i should wait for the t3i sale.

Haha, I was waiting for the D5100 & T3i to both go cheaper...nada to both.

I agree! So much more room with a DSLR. Even doing a quick YouTube search of "D3100 video test", there's so many good looking videos! Just what I'm looking for (of course photos too lol :D)

Even if I wanted to upgrade my body next year, I won't really miss the $300 on this since the price point is so low imo.

Lens is different than body.

The money you put in body will shrink 50% every 2 years.
The money you put in lens will shrink 5% every 20 years. You are not buying a lens. You put down the refundable deposit, get to play with the lens, and sell it 5 years later and get most of your money back.
So would you put $500 down for a mid level lens and sell it $490 5 years later or would you put $100 down for an entry lens and get $95 back 5 years later? If you can afford the down payment, I would go the higher end lens, so I will get better pictures!

thumper300zx 02-26-2013 11:03 AM

SOOOOO don't need this. Got it anyway. Could easily sell this for the price paid if I can't find a reason for it, and they are going fast -- between the 5 minutes I learned about this, 15 more sold -- and 10 more in the 2 minutes since!!!!

Just add 1000 (or 10,000) to your cart and eBay will say:

Item(s) in your cart are not available in the quantity you originally requested. We have updated your shopping cart to reflect the amount that is currently available. Please review these changes before proceeding to checkout.

It will automatically reduce your cart to the amount available.

When I type any number larger than 5, it just states "Purchases are limited to 5 per buyer"

So you can't add to cart -- however, if you keep typing in numbers, once it says type in a lower quantity, that tells you how many left.

815 left now.

Sorry, I should have been more clear....

First add "1" to your cart. Then go to your cart, type in a large number (more than the quantity remaining), and click "update".

I'm so torn. Been looking for a decent starter DSLR and consequently have been waiting for the T3i or T4i to come down in price. Have a best friend since childhood who is a professional photographer and he has sworn by Canon his entire career. However for the price, this seems like a good intro.

Honestly, I'm a starter DSLR-er myself and went ahead & grabbed this D3100. I was too looking to nab a T3i or T4i, even got the T3i down to $475 shipped, but decided against it since this is so cheap in price.

It's cheap enough to where I can get my feet wet in the world of DSLRs, buy a lens or 2, and go from there. By next year or so, if you decide you need an upgrade, you probably won't be out of that much $, since you should be able to resell your gear to grab back some of the money you invested.

If all else fails, you can shoot with it for a week or 2 & send it back :bounce:

How much better is this than the D40x? Is it any better than the old D80? I have been looking for an updated body. The lens is definitely a plus. Opinions??

Just an FYI...Sony is set to launch new entry level DSLR A58 in april at MSRP of $600 with lens . I am hoping this will bring down the prices of A57(same league as T3I/D5100 ?) to 450-500 . If you are not a Canon/Nikon brand freak , this is a worthy competitor.

Ok, I jumped on it. I will try it out and if better than XT then I can sell XT on craigslist. Xt does not have video.

mahdego 02-26-2013 12:45 PM

First DSLR here. Going on a eurotrip (london, amsterdam, paris, frankfurt) for 1 week in April... This should be a good deal on taking nice pics.

Do I need to get another lens for all the outdoor shooting I will be doing or will this combo suffice for a novice?

Cez21 02-26-2013 12:47 PM

AHHHH I BIT! First DSLR... Really excited!

manaknight 02-26-2013 12:49 PM

whats the opinion on refurbs in this matter?
i was set to pull even as a refurb but i'm seeing no ability to get a squaretrade ext warranty or anything...which is sorta turning me off, coming from the PC world where a 3-400 dollar item has 3-5 or lifetime warranties, sort of skeptical, especially considering like clockwork every Canon i've owned dies out at about 1.5 years (never had their dslr's but had their stuff that was the mid between slr and point and shoot)

lockstockedd 02-26-2013 12:52 PM

So I've been wanting to upgrade my d3000 to a d5100. I've been waiting for the prices to drop.

This seems like a pretty good deal though. Something that I'd like to use in the meantime while I wait. Would I be able to sell this on craigslist or somewhere else for equal value?

I did a quick lookup in my area and it would seem so from the average price people are putting it up. Though I am not sure if they are selling.

mainer 02-26-2013 12:54 PM

it really depends on the sellers. there are many seller that have store/major online presence ..

ex. Barnes and Nobel, buy.com

Nikon refurbished and sold by an authorized dealer? Doesn't sound like much risk to me. I can't find this on Craigslist for under $350 which is why I am still toying with the idea...

geniv 02-26-2013 01:27 PM

how does this compare to the Canon T3i with it's default lens?

in terms of quality because I can get a the canon T3i off my friend with the lense for about the same price. (he used it slightly)

red_devil32 02-26-2013 01:44 PM

decided to bite on this. Even thou I still suck at DSLR but I figured I can sell my D40 and the upgraded VR lens on craigslist and spend a few more to upgrade to get viewfinder and HD video isn't bad

Buy it, and if you decide to go with a Canon later, you can probably sell it for the amount you spent (or more).

people need to stop worrying too much. what is more risky, buying refurbs or buying used on cragslist? and also this deal is cheaper than the current going used rate on craigslist

djklmnop 02-26-2013 01:57 PM

hmm.. 1/4000 for maximum shutter speed. It doesn't mention anywhere what the max shutter sync is for flash.

stupidpig 02-26-2013 02:00 PM

Yeah! brought my first DSLR. Thanks OP. Was thinking about getting a micro three fourths to upgrade from my P&S, but this is just too good in price. :)

J03 02-26-2013 02:50 PM

I bit. Wanted a starter DSLR and caved instead of waiting for a T3i. I think I will use this until I see how the Panasonic GX1 comes down in price with their new line coming out in April. Judging from Craigslist, I should be able to offload this for the same price I paid easily.

I read this on Ken Rockwell's website:

The improvements over the D3000 are numerous. The D3000 took way too long to process and record images made with ADR (Adaptive Dynamic Range), had awful high-ISO performance, and the D3000 locked-out image review controls until after you hit the PLAY button! Those problems were unique to the D3000 and fixed in the D3100, so good riddance to the D3000

He recommends it as his "The Best Camera for Everything" take that with a grain of salt, but i guess it means something.

It depends I guess. I'm guessing since people who buy might be looking for their first cam, having the kit lens may be important to them.

I would get the 35mm f/1.8 lens or 50mm if you want a good low light lens. Also if you want more zoom reach you can get the 55-200mm VR or 55-300mm VR lens. maybe a lowpro camera bag, memory stick, and flash (sb-400).

For consumer lenses, Nikons are built better, 5 yr warranty + free lens hood and lens pouch vs canon's 1 yr warranty and no lens hood (wtf canon?).

Pro lenses it depends on the lens, Nikon's 14-24 still has no equal but Canon has some really good telephotos and a good wideangle zoom in the 10-22 that is pretty good even if not pro-grade.

Also, Canon's sensors have not improved in 5 years. They are still using 0.5 micron stuff, whereas Sony-made sensors in most Nikon DSLRs are .18 micron. This is why Canon DSLRs get their butts kicked in DXOMark so much. Supposedly Canon will upgrade its fab sometime soon, but we'll see.

Since it's my first DSLR...what's an affordable entry lens? Don't care if it's refurbed.

-Portrait shooting
-Low light
-Some outside video shooting
-Vlog (inside video shooting)

I would just stick to the kit lens that came with it, learn how to use it and see if it works for you.

If you are into shallow dof and absolutely must buy one then for portrait/low light nothing beats prime. Nikkor 35mm 1.8 works great.

Most people get so enthralled by camera and lens specs that they forget that the person behind the camera is the most important component.

Kit lens is very capable especially since you're just starting out. If I can make a suggestion I would read Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson to get you started with your new camera.

Where/how do you get SquareTrade coupons? I called them and the rep only gave me 2 yrs for like $56 (by offering an extra 20% off)

Thanks

yes, aware, thank you. What i found odd was my policy indicates one year warranty from manufacturer and an additonal two from square trade.

now itching to buy some lenses:D. not sure if refurbed ones would be a good idea or not.

Kit lens is very capable especially since you're just starting out. If I can make a suggestion I would read Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson to get you started with your new camera.

Thanks for the book suggestion. Has high marks on Amazon and is only $15. I'll be sure to pick up a copy!

Yes they will, I've seen some comments concerning recording 1080p video and the speed of the card.

What sort of "comments concerning 1080p video and the speed of the card"? It will have problems and won't work?
I need a good deal on a memory card for this camera as well and while I'd like it to be as inexpensive as possible, I also don't want one that will impede the functions of the camera. I'd also like it to be as large as possible so I don't have to transfer photos as frequently.... Any suggestions?

it does only have the 90 day warranty. After i posted i sent email to square trade to clarify. They said the one year from mfg was stated in error on the policy and also that ebay purchases are only valid for 2 years on cameras. They've already credited my paypal account for what they say is difference between the two and three year policy ($15.27).

I've received square trade coupon offers and have seen them on FB. This particular code i grabbed from another slickdealer yesterday...do a search here for square trade, there's still a lesser discount floating around and many are posting unique codes the don't need.

Awesome, thanks for your reply and repped! I'm still on the fence about getting this SquareTrade warranty...lots of reviews keep mentioning how ST has changed its policy and that it really doesn't do much now....

cool did not know. It had 398. I guess thats good, especially considering when this camera was first released (obviously though these probably are not from first production line).

I know that Nikon recommends a Class 6 or better card to ensure that 1080p video recording works optimally. I picked up the deal on the 16gb samsung class 6 at newegg [newegg.com] for 8 bucks, I've read good things about it

This is what I've been using and have had no problems with it. http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-C...b+class+10

I was thinking I would end up needing a huge memory card, but it looks like an uncompressed image only runs 20-25 MB in size. So I should be able to fit something like 800 uncompressed pictures on a 16 GB card.

rafal 02-28-2013 08:21 AM

Deal is over. If anybody decides to sell their d3100, let me know!

itzlikedat 02-28-2013 11:09 AM

I bought a Toshiba 16 gb class 6. Will this work for recording video without any problem?

allclassnyc 02-28-2013 01:10 PM

Got mine today and it had less than 10 shutter counts, seems too good to be true? Overall, excellent condition of the camera, only slight signs of usage and looks awesome otherwise. I'll have to play with it to judge picture quality but it looks pretty good so far.

FullTiltBoogie 02-28-2013 05:33 PM

Got mine today. Looks and feels brand new. Shutter count 746. Awesome!

jungle 02-28-2013 06:42 PM

Got mine today.. Shutter count 93.

nvrsummer 02-28-2013 07:04 PM

Got mine today too.. Shutter count 230

mainer 02-28-2013 07:53 PM

Received mine today as well. Looks brand new and the shutter count is not as low as some at 726, I am, as of right now satisfied.

stephensantana 02-28-2013 08:00 PM

Keep in mind that our models are rated to 100,000 shutter actuations. ;)

bearscoupons 02-28-2013 08:30 PM

My camera looks and feels brand new. Shutter Count is 197. I intend to shoot that many in about 2 days once this baby is born!

what a deal, $200-300 off MSRP for less than 200 actuations!

now to learn how to use it to do it justice!

Seantk421 02-28-2013 09:01 PM

Got mine today, shutter count 7 after submitting the third photo I took. Looks brand new.

ppt 02-28-2013 09:34 PM

Am I the only one with 2000+ shutter count?

Looks brand new though. What else can I expect from a $300 DLSR!

clemsonteric 03-01-2013 05:31 AM

My order arrived yesterday and wow - this was a great deal. My shutter count was 320.

This guide is pretty useful for setting up the camera:

kmoff77 03-01-2013 10:17 AM

My just arrived as well. Sometime down the road I plan on getting a 35mm lens and a 55-200. Which one of these backpacks would be better for me?

Muffassa 03-01-2013 10:34 AM

man, how are you guys getting yours so fast? Mine is still in transit and won't get delivered until Monday!!

Does it come with any accessories? i.e. shoulder strap, bag, USB cord, etc...?

ogp 03-01-2013 11:16 AM

Just received mine. I'll have to wait until I get home to test it out and check the shutter count. There is some obvious wear on the "OK" and trash button. The lense looks pretty clean. Came with neck strap, ferrite cores, manual, software cd, battery and charger. No usb cable or any other cables (hdmi, av, etc).

alundber 03-01-2013 12:30 PM

Got mine yesterday. Body was in decent shape other than a battery door that had been opened repeatedly with a key. Mirror was dislodged inside, so completely unusable though. $300 is such a good deal that I am going to roll the dice and exchange.

As far as I can tell, the next best option is $446 from Amazon that comes with a small memory card and a backpack. The 5 year warranty is tempting, but $150 is too much more.

I got pretty much everything in the retail box. What was missing was the USB cable. No bag of course!

I know this is sort of a n00b question, but does anyone know what those plastic with metal rivet rectangular pieces that came inside the white box are for? There are 2 of them, 1 bigger and 1 smaller. At first glance they look trivial but they may be useful for something, anyone know? Thanks for the help.

See this. http://support.nikonusa.com/app/a...rite-cores

You attach them to cables to kill noise, if you are using cheap cables.

Nausicaa 03-01-2013 02:25 PM

I took 40 shots, and the shutter count was 41.

Thanks OP!

The deal is back!

I guess not, mine was 3794 after taking a picture to upload (so 3793 when received). Ah well, it seems to work fine!

ppt, dont worry about it, thats almost new. i got a d5100 with 3k hits and that camera has been flawless. i call that camera the Cadillac of cameras. 2k hits is like it was used for 2 days in my opinion.

naytreeee 03-01-2013 04:28 PM

Do you know if these are gray market cameras? O_O jw?!

santy83 03-01-2013 05:32 PM

Mine shows 24 after 1st photo. Looks immaculate.

Of course I have no worries. It's just 2% of maximum (more like 1%) and I know I won't use this camera for that long anyway. Was wondering if I was the only one got one with (relatively) higher number of clicks.

Looks like we drew the short straw!
