NotYetRated 02-26-2013 08:20 AM

These have the same issues as the black edition? With horrible battery life(.5-1.5 hours), constant reboots, etc etc? Or are those issues specific to the black edition?

slumbersix 02-26-2013 08:24 AM

Great deal, wish it were for the black though.

egglestc149 02-26-2013 08:45 AM

This is a good deal, but I must resist and wait for a deal on the black.

would you guys please tell me what is the difference between black and silver edition?

Yes, I'm interested in the same. Given the horrendous issues the black editions have, I'm not likely to upgrade my original HD Hero

I wouldn't, they have horrible engineering issues.

diamondjoker5 02-26-2013 09:01 AM

This is a very good deal. I got the white edition for 200$ then returned it and ended up getting an open box silver edition for $256 form BB since it was open box. The silver edition is so much better than white since you get those wide angle lens. Would have repurchased it right now new except i only paid like 80 for it after BB Amex Halo deal + RZ + open box coupon. The latch on my waterproof housing was a little loose.

I wouldnt bother with black or white, silver is the best price point for the best quality. Wifi remote with the black is kind of useless as well as 4k mode with low fps. You can use your phone as a remote and preview instead of the wifi remote.

Issue is specific to the black edition from my experience. I had a gopro white and have used the silver. Not a single issue with either.
I'm on my second GoPro Black and I've had nothing but trouble. I also don't see the same complaints about the white or silver editions. Sure, you can get a dud but it's not like a problem inherent with those models like you get with the black edition.

Silver and white should be fine

I've had the Hero 2, Hero 3 Silver, and now the Hero 3 Black.

The Hero 3 silver worked perfectly. My (and my friends) Hero 3 Black's both suffer from miserable battery life (1080p @ 60fps lasts maybe 70 minutes), freezing, random reboots, and sometimes not even charging when plugged in. If I hadn't gotten for almost half off from my friend who works @ Go Pro I would be incredibly pissed off. Even as it is I'm considering selling it for $350 and grabbing a Hero 3 again.

I have heard that the silver is the most popular of the hero3's because it doesn't have all the issues of the black and its better quality than the white

hollytree 02-26-2013 09:42 AM

tks to DJ3xclusive. Bought it!

Silver is your safe-est bet. It doesn't have the same issues as black and is way better feature wise than the white. I am a huge go pro fan and have upgraded all along the way. From the Naked to HD Motorsports, and now the Sliver :D

NotYetRated 02-26-2013 10:00 AM

Thanks for all the input everyone. As much as I hate to give my money to a company who would put out such an obvious disaster(the black), and remain silent and blameless about it, there are no good alternatives.... So in for one of these silvers.

Again thanks for all the feedback!

GoGetMeAdeal 02-26-2013 10:01 AM

No Joke i have never seen this any where close to as low

I pulled the trigger on this........ a few times!

For all those waiting for the black, i would advise against it as the black has known issue that the silver is confirmed not to have. Also even if there was a deal on the black it wouldn't ever be able to come with $100 of this deal.

for those asking if white is better, white is the lowest quality and features of the 3 hero's. see comparison here: http://gopro.com/product-comparis...o3-cameras

for pretty much the same price you can get the better model, no brainer if you are into the whole gopro scene!

namike 02-26-2013 10:11 AM

SDers,

I have a Hero2 and just bought a Hero3 Black from BB Sunday (used some RZ certs). Should I return my hero3 black and buy this? Also with regards, to my Hero2, should I purchase the wi-fi bacpac ~$50-$60 for it, or just sell it and buy this?

It's definitely been this low before (lower technically) since I was able to grab one last time :). Not as widely available as an ebay daily sale, but more than a few people got one nonetheless (and I'm not even near a store... was able to order one online). Thread for your reference:

I have a hero2 with wifie backpack and have no problems. The backpack is nice bc it has its own battery. With the hero3 black, the wifi is draining the cameras battery instead of its own, this is why battery life is so horrible.

That doesn't sound like miserable battery life. 1080P/60 is producing twice the amount of data that 1080P/30 produces.

I understand the black model has some bugs, but it's also the only model with any interesting features IMO.

i got a black edition for christmas. i don't use 4k or 2k resolution for filming (a lot of computers can't even play back that resolution). but I LOVE having 1080p at 60fps...really amazing stills from the video. haven;t used the wifi remote though...

agree or disagree... poor battery life is one of the top complaints of Black users. Maybe all their expectations are jaded.

Also this is not even counting having wifi or the remote on. 70 minutes is the max i'm able to produce. Too disappointed to even try the product with wifi/remote enabled.

fuzzyfacedog 02-26-2013 10:41 AM

Any experience as to how long the battery lasts with this Silver Edition, using, say, 720p/30fps HD video?

Is it as bad as the Black Ed. (0.5-1.5 hr)?

TIA.

4K, 2.5K, etc are useful for stabilization during editing - it allows you to crop down to 1080P with a nice buffer around the image. 100 fps @ 960p is pretty impressive, too. Although it suffers from lousy battery life, the Black is pretty amazing from a features standpoint.

kechinbou! 02-26-2013 10:49 AM

Maybe this is a dumb question, but why would you need WIFI on these? Isn't that just going to help drain your battery faster? Seems like it's something that would only be marginally useful at home for downloading the video. Anything else?

I could easily get 2 1/2 hrs on my Hero 2 as well as my Hero 3 silver edition with 1080p@30fps.

Yes, I did see that. If battery power is an issue (like for a full day of skiing or biking), then it seems to me like you'd want that WIFI off.

This begs the question though - is the camera acting like a Wifi hotspot then? In other words, it would be the DHCP server and the smartphone/tablet would be a client? It would have to be in order for clients to connect, I believe.

The wifi can be used to control many Go Pro camera's at once. Say on my motorcycle I want to hook up a camera on my helmet, front of the bike and rear of the bike. Being able to turn them all on at exactly the same time is somewhat useful. They advertise you can control 30 camera's at once with the wifi/app I believe.

Yes, the camera is acting as a hotspot. You must disconnect your phone from other wifi networks and connect specifically to your camera.

champurado 02-26-2013 11:02 AM

So I have the hd2 with wifi bac. Is it worth the upgrade to the silver edition? I would sell the hd2 to make up the difference but wanted to know if it's worth the hassle to do it. I use mine mostly for snowboarding and mountain biking if it makes any difference.

I believe it lets your phone function as a remote viewfinder. Given the whole concept of the GoPro having a remote viewfinder seems like a necessity if you want an idea of what you're going to get.

I own a black and have had it for a few weeks. Initially I had issues with it freezing when I connected it to the computer and then unplugged it. Other than that, it's worked like I'd expect it to. Battery life is short (1.5 hours on average) But I wouldn't expect much from such a small battery. Don't know how the silver performs, just saying I haven't had the bad experience that people seem to expect of the black.

I never owned a hero2, but my cousin had one and his battery didn't seem to last all that long either. He had to get the battery bacpac for it. I just got a pair of wasabi batteries for my black and I can record until my sd fills up and some.

Wow - now that would be a sweet setup. Too bad I'm not prepared to spend thousands. ...not to mention I can't do anything crazy enough worth setting up that many cameras for. :)

I use the wifi to connect to my iphone and frame my shot. Then I turn it off. I HIGHLY recommend the battery backpack. The Hero3 has horrible battery life even with wifi off.

the biggest differences in my opinion (only use it on my motorcycle) are:

1. built in wifi
2. noticeable smaller form factor

I was able to sell my great condition Hero 2 for $180 on craigslist and buy the Hero 3 silver for $225. That was worth it to me. If the #'s were further apart... not so sure.

zergie808 02-26-2013 01:29 PM

Streetbike can use handlebar mount. Car can use suction cup mount. Helmet mount might come with the camera. It's a slightly curved piece with double-sided tape. You can also stick the flat mount on your car as well. That one comes with the camera for sure. And if you're missing any of these sticky pieces there's a mount grab-bag that has them.

I am in the same boat. have two of the Go Pro HD Motorsport Editions. Thinking about grabbing two of these to replace them. Wifi is a plus and it is better in darker conditions. the Go Pro Hd (1) sucks in low light. I like make them night time car videos as well as during the day.

I think the black is slightly better then the Silver as far as low light based on the you tube videos that I saw. but not sure it its worth another $170.

Thanks! Don't forget to rig up some sort tether if you're using the suction mount outside your car (high strength fishing wire?). Nothing worse than watching your $200+ toy falling off the car and getting run over by another. Personally I use the flat sticky mount on the inside windshield behind the rear-view mirror, that way I don't have to see it when not using the gopro.

I am debating ordering this on this site or at REI with the member discount + 20 gift card. on REI it would be 250 total

So that would come out to be 20 dollars more expensive but you have lifetime returns and everything. Since GoPro 3's have so many problems maybe its worth it.
any comments?

dont forget tax. so it will be a little bit more.

and not that im advocating this but if your hero3 acts up you could always buy a brand new one from rei and then swap it out. they dont check serial numbers from what i know when returning items.

Buying it from Ebay only compounds the issue, as factory warranty is not valid buying from a private party. So good luck trying to return it in case it dies soon, as it has for many buyers.

That's my thought too. Depending on the range, it also lets you use it as a remote camera, too, right? Like mounting it to an R/C aircraft? (With attendant lag, so it's not useful for FPV, though).

I have no idea what the range is, but the wifi viewfinder is delayed by about 3 seconds (on my friend's Black). It helps you position the camera, but can't really be used for a real-time view.

beans 02-26-2013 04:18 PM

I haven't tried the range on my black, but I've heard that if the camera is underwater, after three feet it loses connection. Using the remote that comes with the black, though, if both are underwater the range is decent. And it can work as a remote camera with like a 3 second delay, but only to view. You can't record and see what's recording at the same time.

toddsquad 02-26-2013 04:21 PM

Looks great thanks!! Does anyone know what size MicroSD it comes with? Can't seem to find it

beans 02-26-2013 04:33 PM

I don't think it comes with a card

aloharacing 02-26-2013 04:43 PM

Thanks OP, pulled trigger on this vs. black edition.

Now, need to set up a deal alert for a microSD card.

Is everyone using this mainly to record sport related activities?

fuzzyfacedog 02-26-2013 04:50 PM

Someone mentioned a user manual is not in the box.

Found this online manual.

http://gopro.com/wp-content/uploa...AL_web.pdf

I was wondering about SDXC card compatibility:

"Insert a microSD™, microSDHC™ or microSDXC™ card into the card
slot with label facing forward, narrowest part of the card first.
Speed Class 4 or higher cards are recommended."

Not me. Mounting to vehicle due to the nice 170 degree field of capture (vs. a regular Canon Elph or something).

Just used it at Mardi Gras for 'On-the-street' footage.

But I do mainly use it for sports stuff.

$230 is a good price. Paid $240 two months ago.

I just got a message back from the seller that eBay accidentally pulled their listing because of use of the manufacturers picture. they said my order will ship out on time (next day) and that they re-listed the item and is once again on the DAILY DEALS. : http://deals.ebay.com/

The Seller (Adam) was very nice and kind

Damn, finally caved and bought one.

Also went ahead and purchased this card from amazon to arrive same day as camera.
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Mic...micro+sdhc

Only $6 more than the Polaroid deals around here and it is true Class 10 or greater speeds. I'm sure they have been here cheaper, but this works in a pinch.

I figure if I don't like it or have much of a use I have a full year I could sell on Craigslist and recoup the cost pretty easily.

REI is running a promo currently if your a member, spend 100 dollars and get a 20 dollar gift card. I needed something else so i bought that. Got the gift card and then will use that against the GoPro

so GoPro Silver edition - 300 - 10% member discount - 20 gift card = 250.....
Hmmm still debating.

Yep, says that on mine too. I thought the other person contacted the seller and that's why they got a response. I guess I should contact him today and see if he's still shipping mine 2 day since I paid $10 extra.

I emailed him last night, and would understand he has a slew of emails since the removal of the 1st listing, so I am giving him all of today to reply. Hopefully he does.

Edit: Received response. Order from 1st listing to be shipped still, and expedited shipping. Said to ask for tracking number in a day.

hwyking 02-27-2013 08:59 AM

Got a quick response. Since everyone is getting expedited shipping I asked if my $9.99 would be refunded or if I would be bumped up to overnight :)

Hi, eBay has accidentally pulled the listing due to the manufacturer complaining that their photo was being used. Apparently, it is “copyrighted”. We re-listed the item and was again on the eBay Daily Deals page (till it sold out), please rest assured, this does not affect your order in any way. Your order will be processed as normal and will be shipped on schedule. Because of all this we will make sure each order ships out with an expedited shipping method so your order can get to you even faster :) However we cannot change the address as I mentioned in a previous message so please let me know if you would like to keep the order as is or cancel for a refund.

Feel free to contact me for a tracking number within 1 business day and I will have it available.

Thank you for your understanding.

Mine is waiting for me at my house when I get off work. Just have to wait until monday for the SD card, and then later in the week for the suction mount. Then it's play time.

In the mean time I guess I'll test out it's functionality with my phone as the remote.

It's like Christmas day in February for me.

Got the idea from here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEDzYflMsYc

Its as simple as going to your local hardware store (I got mine at Harbor Freight) and finding a large flat disk magnet. The video uses a 25 pound pull magnet, I didn't feel to confident with that so I bumped up to a 95 pound pull. Clean the top off well, take the flat adhesive mount that ships with your GoPro, and stick it on. I used clear packing tape on the bottom of the magnet so it doesn't beat the shit out of my car.

Bam, awesome magnet mount for $5. Works really well too.

Great idea. Thanks. I was trying to figure out how to mount my camera on different areas on my bike but don't trust the suction cups. Also there are not very many *flat* surfaces on my bike. Now I think I found a solution. I'll be using this for my gas tank, swing arm, frame etc.
