WORD OF CAUTION

Beware that some of these refurbs are coming in as DOA and you will therefore end up having to send it back. Most of the issues are related to this symptom occurring --> LINKY [wdc.com]

UPDATE - It may be possible to fix most (if not all) bricked devices with a serial cable. I only had the issue where it would show the boot screen then go blank and was able to fix that with the serial cable. It may potentially work with other problems if you can get the device to panic where it asks to plug in a USB drive with a firmware. At that point you are good to go as it will update to the firmware and reboot into a working device.

Great product, price and people seem to be happy with this seller. BUT why has OP made a new post this week and seems to be connected to the seller?

If you have a good deal, why not contact SD and advertise it or just say you are selling them.

I doubt he is selling them or connected to them. He even questioned why anybody would be three or more. Can't be good for business to bash your own product.

TheEdge 02-26-2013 12:58 PM

I have an LG BP125 [walmart.com] that I got around Black Friday for ~$30.

Better deal? That or the WDTV Live?

Not what is the better product, what is the better "bang for your buck product"? Please take into account that I'd need to try and sell the LG (which is a con).

Also, naturally, the WDTV doesn't play blu-rays/DVDs (not that I do a lot of that). The LG also seems to play a lot of stuff that I throw at it. I also have plenty of smart TVs/PS3s/etc., so I don't need the Pandoras/Hulus/etc. of the world.

I've just never used a WD, not sure how great they are.

twinklestar007 02-26-2013 01:01 PM

I am OP. If i sold those i would not be buying those.. I bought one after spending 3 months trying to catch that stupid WD store deal. i even had a chrome extension running.

I bought my first unit 2 weeks back on amazon and i got a coupon and tried on my Wife's amazon account and it worked and posted here. Last week it was 66.99 before coupon and today i saw it was 64.99$ before coupon.
Obviously i am not a active user but this is the first thing which i thought could make some sense for users. Last week post also someone said i am the one who is selling it.
If i had that big of a store i would not be out here spending time on blogs!! This totally discourages me..!

To ADD.. I am going to write to the seller and see if i can get a free unit coz i am sure 7 of them atleast bought here LOL...

I didn't see anything about it being able to handle the lossless HD audio formats such as Dolby True HD.

"Audio Formats Supported: MP3, WAV/PCM/LPCM, WMA, AAC, FLAC, MKA, AIF/AIFF, OGG, Dolby Digital, DTS"

Can anybody comment if it can or not?

As a fellow BP125 owner, the thing that bugs me is how slow it is to respond. That said, I have a HTPC, so I don't plan to buy anything else. All that said, it kinda sounds like you answered your own question: you already have the LG, your LG plays everything you throw at it, you have all the apps you need covered, and you don't want to sell your LG...

KiraOfTheSky 02-26-2013 01:23 PM

Yeah, and if somebody can confirm that the WDTV Live doesn't play HD audio formats, it'd be the nail in the coffin.

The only downside, in my mind, to the LG is that it doesn't have network capabilities. So everything is played off an external HD (I also noticed the LG didn't recognize a 2TB externally powered HDD).

With the WDTVL, I could just play stuff through my network.

speaking of slingbox does it let me watch movies anywhere? from a friend house, a trip to the other side of the country as long as I'm on a network? would a Roku 2 Xs do the same for a WD TV?

DaveKnowsAll 02-26-2013 01:42 PM

I have a number of these boxes (WD, ACRyan, even an old Zyxel), but now prefer my Android stick computer over all of them. For a similar cost (after adding in a wireless keyboard or mouse since there is no remote, or a slightly higher cost if I use my lenovo), I have apps that work as well as or better than these for everything a WD Live can do, with the confidence that they are kept up to date and I am always getting more.

My wife misses the remote, but other than that I can't think of a thing I am missing. What are people finding useful about these over the Android sticks?

twinklestar007 02-26-2013 01:51 PM

I only have the WD live and i tried the cinematube a year back and returned it. The WD live has an excellent app for remote which i use from my iphone and there is a web remote also.. I did find the UI to be a little slower though.

The url is : http://192.168.1.108/wdtvlive/remote/

Replace that ip with your device ip address.

Caution/Warning/Advantage?

I ordered one of these and it was not "factory reset" when I got it. It still had the pervious person's NetFlix account on it and Pandora stations.

To me thats an advantage... and thats not my fault and so no one could come after me..

The only sad news is that it did not happen to me. Both units i got were in a sealed envelope and almost brand new but in a cardboard box.

stgermaine 02-26-2013 02:12 PM

If anyone is on the fence, just do it! This thing is awesome. I have 3 (1 refurb, which is as a good as the 2 new). It plays literally everything I throw at it. And room for 2 flash drives. Just excellent! I even have an app that streams from the WDTV to my ipad and iPhone. This is esp handy for kids.

I hear you. I first went with File Browser (paid for it, even) and it was very buggy, so I tried File Explorer (free), which worked beautifully.

FREE FileExplorer: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/f...82524?mt=8
$5 FileBrowser: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/f...38545?mt=8
(itunes is not loading for me, so links may not work)

I did figure out that if I just rebooted the WDTV, Filebrowser worked fine. So either one, really. The ipad/iphone has a video player (I think it's called AirPlay) built in for the actual streaming and the file apps above connect you to the WDTV so you can locate the file.

I'm pretty sure you can only play mp4 files for video, so you may have to convert some of your files.

Also, come to think of it, WDTV has an iphone remote control app that is awesome. I love it as I always have my phone nearby but somehow the remote always disappears. Plus phone lights up at night so I can see the buttons!

Have a slingbox and this unit. Can confirm that the slingbox works perfect. I've even used it with a 3G router. The lower the bandwidth the worse the picture.

As a comment my refurbished unit has non working RCA outputs. Not a deal breaker for me but had me wondering if it worked when I tested on a Tv with no HDMI.

Per the HD rules:

Quote:

Begging for points is frowned upon.

People are not obligated to give you reps and some do, some don't, some forget to do so, but prompting for them or outright reminding will more than likely get you ignored more than accepted. It's hit and miss so you just have to deal with it.

edit : is it hackable ? Can we install android ?

sabreindian 02-26-2013 05:11 PM

I bought a refurbed one from ebay couple of weeks ago. Something is seriously wrong with that unit. Everything is slow. using the remote to navigate takes 5-10 seconds to jump to the next option. I ordered the one from Amazon last week. Letz see how that plays out.

Medic311 02-26-2013 05:17 PM

followed the steps but it says the code cannot be applied

dead?

wait nevermind. it works on the one shipped directly from The-Edeals but not the one fulfilled by amazon (free shipping). so the code works on the non-free shipping one...

nevermind again. i tricked it into accepting the code. i added both, then copied/pasted the code, then removed the non-free shipping one. it worked!

Netflix, et. al. support for the Live Plus which came out in 2010) as opposed to the Live which does not (came out in 2009). Live Plus is a pretty aluminum color while Live is Black. Same connections on the back but arranged different. More can be read here [wikipedia.org].

I believe this is WD TV Live Streaming ( released 2011) not the first gen WD TV Live ( rel 2009 ) . So this supports netflix too . I have been scratching my head too on various versions and the differences... so confusing:confused:

As mentioned by others, asking for reps is frowned upon. In fact, I would edit/remove that post. Typically, asking for reps results in people not only NOT giving you reps, but giving the deal a "thumbs down" to boot.

The deal, if popular enough, will generate your reps. It has made front page, so they should start coming in.

And reps don't get you anything. They are just for pride.

Transcodes and plays many file formats that your Samsung Smart TV cannot do. It may provide far more apps than the WDTV but will not act as a media server across your network.

You are correct. This is the one I ordered from Amazon a couple of years ago and I love it. Yes it has Netflix support but I don't ever use it because I have a PS3 for that. This definitely not the 1st gen WDTV Live. Not even sure if those are scattered about as much anymore.

I'm tempted to go this route (if I get one at all), but I've heard most OD's don't let you use coupons on tech items.

DVDBob 02-26-2013 05:39 PM

For those who already have previous WDTV's, this one is the "Streaming" version or Gen3. Menus are much faster than the previous Gen1 and Gen2 and Live Plus models. I've got the Live Hub and it will play EVERYTHING I throw at it - MKVs, AVIs, MP4s, etc., including SBS and OU 3D MKVs. (It will not play MVC MKVs) However there is NO HI-DEF AUDIO. DTS and DD 5.1 only. If you want DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD, you'll want to pick up something else.

Supported file formats for audio:

Audio - MP3, WAV/PCM/LPCM, WMA, AAC, FLAC, MKA, AIF/AIFF, OGG, Dolby Digital, DTS

So I'm going to say Yes, depending on your format.

Thank you for this. Deal killer for me. My LG BP125 (Blu-Ray player with USB) can bitstream them (at the very least).

Repped.

Of those you listed, none of them are an HD lossless audio format (i.e. Dolby True HD, DTS-HD MA).

Flac is lossless audio, but not lossless HD audio (in terms of movie playback).

I saw that line in the product listing, but wanted to make sure that they didn't forget to list something. Thanks.

Thanks ! My samsung has been able to play most formats i have thrown at it including mkv files . how is wd's media server capabilities different than DLNA streaming that my netgear router does. also , amazon page tells me that it's only available on wd hub not on the player. thanks in advance .

I was googling around to find the answer to this and according to this forum [wdc.com] the Live does support True-HD but only in an m2ts container.

I honestly don't really know what that means but I thought it might be worth sharing. ;)

Just an FYI about the WD TV Play, it does not support "MPEG2 videos and DTS audio" as per http://www.wdc.com/en/products/ho...iaplayers/

Not sure how big of an issue it is. But this WD TV Live device is amazing.

Well probably for the best because it would absolutely sound horrible via wireless N so you'd have to go with the wired connection to prevent the audio playback from hiccuping.

That's the route I had planned to go if I got one. My router is just a few feet from where I currently have my LG player that it would have replaced.

CBBlaker 02-26-2013 06:13 PM

Gotta brag on a find I got here in Kansas. I was looking for this streamer specifically and searched for it on Craigslist, and someone was selling well over a hundred of these used for $35 and $5 shipping. I went ahead and did it since they were PayPal verified, and I got it quickly and the damn thing was still new! I enjoy it, but my router has issues getting it to display the shares properly. I have a Linksys e3000, which has done nothing but give me grief since I bought it, so I just bought a new Asus RT-66U. I figure that router should last me a few years easy and give me a lot less grief with dropped Wi-Fi signals.

(It will also play subtitles in a .sub file with the same filename as the mkv)

So maybe someone can explain what exactly this product is for? I know that sounds incredibly lame, but here's my deal.

I have a PS3, an Xbox 360, and a computer that has an HDMI hookup to my TV. What does this device do? Does it just stream whatever I'm playing on my computer? Couldn't I just use the computer for that? If it's about the wireless, can't I stream something to my ps3 or xbox? Wondering if I need this, basically.

edoubledeezy 02-26-2013 06:59 PM

I bought one of these at launch and I love it. Plays everything I throw at it, super energy efficient and other than the sound cutting out for a split second every few days I'm really happy. I'm still debating if I should buy one at Office Depot...

If you mean forced subtitles, like English for when Aliens speak, like in District 9, then no, BUT you can fake it out with a subtitle editor that only has those subs in it and leave it on throughout the movie.

If you have various movie file formats, it can play them through your network or off a USB stick.

Since you have a PS3 and XBOX, you probably don't have a major need for this.

I know PS3s don't play MKVs (not sure about XBOXs) and that is my "backup my Blu-Ray to a file" format of choice, so I've opted for a device similar to this.

I'm pretty sure they don't. Never tried, but I've read on multiple sources that they don't without using a JB'ed PS3 and some kind of software.

Here's one source [ps3hax.net] via a quick google search.

EDIT: And another [avforums.com]. You need to stream an MKV via a media server that will transcode it on the fly to get the PS3 to play it.

I thought I read in the past that Sony doesn't like MKVs (since it is often associated with pirated content). Which is part of the reason I incorrectly assumed that a Sony Blu-Ray player deal I read about on here wouldn't support MKV file playback via USB or the like, but it did.

Somewhat unrelated to the device in the OP, I noticed this [amazon.com] in some research. This bad boy plays lossless audio formats in HD movies. Even more impressive, it will play BD ISOs (2D and 3D). Wowza. I know the price is double what the OP posted, but for those looking for a "complete" media player, it seems as there isn't much "local" or "local network" content that this doesn't play (I didn't look into streaming services options or lack thereof).

Bought a WD TV Live at Office Depot with the 30% off coupon printed off their website.
99-30+tax = 76.29

The new model WD TV Play that just came out has bad reviews on amazon, it appears it lacks local network play, it's more like a Roku now. Bad move; I bought the Roku 2 XS at 55 bucks and will be returning it partly because of this same lacking the Play has (also because of the CC and account requirement to "activate" a box I purchased fair and square).

endershadow 02-26-2013 09:32 PM

I bought a recert from the wd site and can't find the "special offers." Do I have to update firmware for that?

cough ** yes ** cough *** DTS ** AC-3 ** and handles all subs too, but internal inside .mkv and external .srt and other formats too.

Works great for me wtih my pc network shares. My most recent one of these just got a burnt out front USB port.. rear one works fine, but lately I just keep my pc on and share a folder.. shows up under "WINDOWS SHARES" on the WDTV live.. plays very well.

I also recently jailbroke my iPad 2, installed XBMC on it, and it can see both my PC shares, and whatever USB device happens to be plugged into the WDTV, even when the WDTV power light is not on (I guess it is just in some kind of sleep mode). Streams from the WDTV to the XBMC on the ipad great!! XBMC is very good on iOS.. decodes the DTS sound tracks etc.. only thing it won't do, that I can figure out at least on iOS is scrape for movie / show data like the PC and I believe Android versions do.

jmr2198 02-27-2013 06:51 AM

oh.. just a word to the wise, the new WDTV Play model sucks. Won't decode DTS soundtracks and a couple other things too. It is not an "upgrade"... they just wanted to lower the price to compete with the AppleTV and other devices coming, ie: Raspberry Pi android sticks. I am waiting till the kinks are worked out with RaspberryPi and I am going that route. While i do like the WDTV players, they upgrade VERY LITTLE in terms of features without buying the new year's model. screw that. Also it is VERY SLOW and VERY BUGGY with scraping media library data.. at least that is what I found. That was the main reason I upgraded my older WDTV Live player to this newer one.. for the media scraping stuff.. but it is buggy.. especially when copying over files across your home network to the USB device on it. I now just leave "media library" turned off.. not worth it. It crashes the whole WDTV sometimes, other times it never recognizes you copied new files to it, and won't show it, until you rebuild the library, or eject the USB device and mount it again.

I have an Android Stick (808 Mk2), and unless the speeds have at least quadrupled (from what I've read they haven't - mine is on the order of 1/2 the current "state of the art" speed) - then there's lots of usability problems that persist. Sure, you CAN browse - and wait for videos to load - sure you CAN run Android Play - and wait for it to load the first page - sure you CAN run XBMC - cross your fingers that it doesn't crash because its taking SO freaking long to do ANYTHING (just like iHeartRadio and many others)....
Don't get me wrong - I love the thing, but it takes LOTS of getting used to, and LOTS of patience - much more than those looking for a simple networked media player will be willing to deal with.

Thanks Redsrule. We use Slingbox all the time, and that is an incredible bonus for this unit. Unfortunately, we don't have the newer HD unit, but this might just push us towards getting it.

After christmas rolled around, they completely gave up on it and the only person working on it does so under a Ransomware philosophy ("Donate enough money and I'll work on it") and the last two version of b-rad's firmware have been known to brick their systems.

Just excellent! I even have an app that streams from the WDTV to my ipad and iPhone. This is esp handy for kids.

Sigh. No clue. Though I hope someone else will see this and answer. I do most of my viewing from my flash drives, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.

I agree. can it truly play 1080p flawlessly?

Don't get me wrong - I love the thing, but it takes LOTS of getting used to, and LOTS of patience - much more than those looking for a simple networked media player will be willing to deal with.

What are the benefits of using something like this product over a computer controlled media server program like tversity, other then needing a computer? Forgive me if this is a dumb question, I don't really understand what this product is used for.

I spoke too soon..For the WDTV Gen 2, there's a better custom firmware that fixes header compression and .mp4 errors. Looks nicer, too:

No, it does not have a browser. If you want browser interface, you might just build a htpc. I have the Popcorn hour A210, which is higher end than this Wdtv, and it does not have a browser. You might want to check out Oppo, Dune, Popcorn hour devices. However, they are much more expensive than WDTV Live. The picture quality from this WDTV Live is sub par though.

I am cancelling my order as the discussions here has move from how great this product is to there may be other better choices for around the same price point with better IQ. I guess what I wanted it for is to stream video content from a NAS, so if it excels at that then it may worth keeping.

Yes, it excels at playing content from a NAS. This is how I use my Live Hub. Not sure how this one differs, but it should be similar. Plays ISOs, MKVs, etc, all over the network. I even have my NAS streaming through a wireless N bridge, and haven't seen a skip yet.

Go to OD.com, look on the right screen, at the middle, you'll see the30% off, click it then print it. I just got home from OD with a version 1 for $75.XX (OTD). Stop by BestBuy in the same mall, saw a version 2 ( pics from the box I could tell SLING BOX ad too ), not sure what' different, found out BB WON'T accept competitor coupon, I ....begged the manager but he won't budge ! I forgot that BB wouldn't not accept their own coupon recently ($50 off Mastercard).

I even told the manager politely that BB should honor OD, OM and Staples, give BB corporate the feedback or you won't have your job, because BB will end up as an online store like Circuit City, then he' kind of got mad, I just had to ice the cake and told him " BB in my opinion, perhaps to most, smart consumer : you're always a very nice showroom for me".

yazyazoo 02-27-2013 07:42 PM

The last FW update on my Live Plus killed my ability to use my N wifi usb dongle. The WDTV keeps popping up there is an update that is annoying.

WD let you roll back but to only a certain firmware and it hasn't fixed my N wifi dongle.

People on the WD forums are pretty pissed. They are losing the ability to see a NAS drive or server which is the whole ability to use it. WD just has some moderator from their company saying it's not their problem.

GoWhiteSox 02-27-2013 07:49 PM

Same thing here. It booted up showing the WD Live logo then went blank. Waited for like 5 minutes nothing happened. Repeated several times, it was the same. How can they call this "refurbished" when it is still faulty!!!

2devnull 03-01-2013 06:57 AM

rather than sending it back DOA immediately, have you tried to re-install the firmware? I'm wondering if these are just returns from people who screwed with them and messed up the firmware and they just took the return, brown box them and resold it under "refurbish" without doing the firmware re-install. Unless there is a physical damage to the unit, it should technically be possible to bring it back to life with a solder gun.

twinklestar007 03-01-2013 11:44 AM

If defective we can simply return the device and let the seller deal with it and pay the penalty and thats one of the prime reason why i still shop on amazon as we dont have to get a run around in case of any issues.
Thats primarily the reason why amazon is still a great place to shop also!

Yeah, I won't even go into that store (BB). Their policies suck, price matching is a joke, the geek squad are a bunch of idiots that overcharge and they sell a lot of entry level/ crap computers so that hopefully you'll come back to them in a year or two to either buy another one or to pay top $$ to get it fixed.
I sure hope they go the path of Circuit City. I tell my customers & friends to just browse at that store and jot down the brand/model of what they are interested in buying, but under NO circumstances, buy it there.

Yes, you can. But if FW reinstallation screws up and they can prove you did, now the finger is pointing back at you. And I do not know why I should spend my time trying to fix it since a new unit can be had for a couple $ more on a deal popping up time to time. The reason I bought it because I wanted to try it with my wmv files immediately. Since it came DOA, I can wait for the next deal.

i doubt in this day and age (probably for very high-end high ticket items) anyone connects a return and analyze it. Most of the time it is a process, check return came in, see who sent it back, issue refund, put item in some pile to be sent off back to manufacture or to a reseller/refurbisher. I wouldn't get paranoid about such things.

I'm willing to give WD one more shot only since I want something that will play my movies off a USB hard drive (something I hear the Roku player does not do very well). Funny thing is my coworker bought the exact same deal and his is fine. My other coworker got in on the Staples deal for $70 to get a brand new WD TV player and his was also defective. 66% failure rate for all three of us haha.

Mine works and updated to the latest firmware, but the DVDs I'm playing off my network through a Powerline 200Mbps connector all stutter and are unwatchable. Obviously, I would think it is a bandwidth issue, but my older WDTV Live Plus plays them with no problems or pauses while the new player stops and has no audio.

It looked new and unused out of the box.

sundown 03-05-2013 09:39 AM

I just got a chance to pickup the mail today and everything seems to work fine. It looked new to me except the plastic bag for the composite cables was torn on 1 corner I've would have never know it was a refurb anyway I did not update firmware. Thanks..

The white LED did power on, but that's about it. No signal being sent to the display. The one thing I didn't try was the composite cable included with the package, but I wouldn't settle for using that anyway. Guess I'll be waiting for the next deal.

I did see that Western Digital is selling refurbs for $59.99 and there's a $15 off coupon if you spend $100 plus free shipping, which would effectively make these units about $52 a piece before tax. Unfortunately I don't know anyone else who would want to go in on this with me.

Good luck catching it when it comes back in stock and gets posted here - usually it doesn't last more than 15 minutes. Also, shipping is somewhere around $7.50 so it not that big of a savings. Amazon's return policy for Amazon fulfilled at least allows free returns on defective items, not sure about WD?

I had one of these (older version)
WD TV Live Plus
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/pr...spx?id=320
SD at the time it was refurbished for $45

I think I got it close to 2 years ago. though I haven't use it much since I got it and I just turned it on and let it do an update a few days ago.

The functionality really improved on it since I last used it
- can play YouTube HD
- can play pretty much every every video format I threw at it FLV, MOV, AVI etc.. only one it didn't play was some crapfunkyly encoded MOV file.
- load and detect my network drives fast.

- WD seems to really updated their firmware often and fast. seems like every time I use it (usally a few months at a time) there is a new firmware update.

great little net units if you can get one for around $45.

I do wish it have a USB port on the front. and facebook app on it sucks (though I don't care for FB) for anyone that is worndering

Apple TV is good if you have Apple ecosystem. I personally really like the AirPlay feature on Apple TV.
If you just want to stream a lot of free contents, I think Roku fits your needs better. If you want to play movie files from your PC, WD TV is better since it supports many codecs.

It look in stock on WD again at $59.99, but it you have to pay shipping and possibly re-shipping if it doesn't work than Amazon is probably better unless you order 2 and use the coupon code posted a few messages earlier.

Update: WD Shipping is free on $100+

I did get a dud! DVD network playback doesn't work, yet works fine with my old WDTV Live Plus. Goings test my old PBO media player to see if it works OK too.

Oh that sucks, I didn't realize you got a dud too.

Hahahaha, well lookie what we have here now  I was about to pull the trigger on it again, but I actually have an alternative idea. If I buy two of them from the WD outlet using the WDCARES coupon, they come out to a bit under $57 out the door including tax. I would then have two units which essentially doubles my chances of getting a working one (unless they both came as duds, that would suck). I'll just keep one of the working ones and then return the other one for a refund. Shipping it back shouldn't cost me more than $6-7, which would still put my unit cost to about the same as this Amazon one. Only difference is I get the chance to try two units out. A bit more hassle yeah...what do you think?

Dont you think WD will remove the coupon savings if you return one unit? Its pretty basic concept right.. If they do then you are robbed.. coz you would pay like 66+7$ for return shipping :)

I'm still smarting that my 2011 WDTV Live Plus does not support MLB.tv Had my fingers crossed that the latest firmware update (01/2013) would have taken care of that...but no. May have to pick up one of these JUST to watch baseball.

Heads up not the most user friendly for network shares, but they do work.

I have purchased WDTV Live Plus HD from WD Refub years ago. Their customer service has been good. They prompt replaced one unit that I complained was heating up. I placed order for two.

Will we get Vudu credit for WDTV Units as well?

shadowgerm 03-06-2013 08:12 AM

I still have the first gen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WD_T...1st_Gen.29 that I use weekly to watch Walking Dead and 1080p movies. Guess its time for upgrade, thanks op!

I see factory refurbs on eBay for $53.99 shipped from a highly rated seller.

exilepa 03-06-2013 08:24 AM
