What wunderground.com membership gives you:
No Ads and 40 frames on radar loop (instead of 10)

StarfirePrime 02-26-2013 12:13 PM

Thanks for the heads up! In my case, it extended my membership to a one year from today rather than one year from the expiration (roughly six extra months).

!xobile! 02-26-2013 01:08 PM

Thanks. Mine just expired from previous promo code.

chava 02-26-2013 01:28 PM

Can someone tell me why this is so much better than weather.com or some other weather website? I'm sure it is, but I have never used it before. What can "it" do that other websites can't do?

Thanks!

gamefreakgcb 02-26-2013 03:27 PM

I never even knew that mine expired.

I know from first hand experience that tv producers at the weather channel will not use temps from weather.com because they are not accurate. I can't say that wunderground is anymore accurate even though they are also owned by the weather channel now.
Weather.com is slap full of ads, they keep popup blockers in business.

Great. Thanks. I definitely can see the difference in ads!

Dr Colossus 02-26-2013 03:37 PM

so if i have a popup blocker, why would i need to become a member at wunderground?

killdiablo 02-26-2013 03:43 PM

Thanks! It works!

caranddriver 02-26-2013 03:45 PM

Thanks! Worked. Got rid of the ads on the iOS app! I like the ability to see the map with personal weather stations and it has a 10-day forecast which is what kept me tied to the weather.com app.

You have access to a huge number of weather stations operated by folks as a hobby. Most of them are very accurate and update at a high rate. I have one less than 1/4 mile from my house.

Their web site has some other nice stuff like wundermap which overlays weather radar on Google maps with a bunch of controls.

Decent Android and iOS apps.

This gets you ad free.

Just my opinion:

No annoying video that plays as soon as the page loads.

Cleaner layout.

Rapid Fire Updates - info like temp and wind update every few seconds.

Most information available on the main page without clicking different tabs or links.

I found it extremely helpful when my parents called trying to find out the best place to find current weather for their home town (they are NOT internet friendly).

They were able to pull up the town, even found a weather station actually close to where they grew up! They also quickly found an available webcam, and the almanac and historical data for the area. I usually have to literally walk them through every step on a web page, but once they pulled up the city they were good to go.

I watch TWC daily, but still find it funny that the website doesn't incorporate half of the technology they use on their broadcasts.

TU and rep to OP. Never knew there was a membership or way of removing ads...just figured it was a free site.

If I need to test ad and pop up blockers I go to Weather.com. Talk about a site infested with advertising. It is more ads than useful info.

As far as I know, accuweather.com is better and accurate than weather.com. I totally forgot I signed up for this service back in 9/1/12 and this is my second time using it so I cannot give you the comparison.

You can also get model data from wunderground that's pretty damn good for free.

brnout 02-26-2013 08:50 PM

Weird. I paid the $5 once back in 2003 and it just automatically extends it every year. I did have my weather station on their network many years ago - maybe they give free memberships to you then... I dunno. I'm just happy to still have my no-ads membership 10 years later.

Jbrizzel 02-26-2013 09:06 PM

What is so different from this website versus weather.com or google etc?

DEAL EEL 02-26-2013 09:07 PM

Intellicast.com has ads and no phone apps, but its amount of information is superior. You can find a relevant page (Doppler, NEXRAD) and then just bookmark it.

If you don't like ads, look into extensions for your browser to disable them!

This website will pay slickdeals to get new members, that's the difference. ;)

I'm not sure if that's true, just making a logical guess. :)

Nikola-Tesla 02-26-2013 09:09 PM

Mcdrew88 02-26-2013 09:10 PM

They don't name their winter storms, they must not be reliable.

Thanks OP. Now I can find the weather without being bombarded with stories about asteroids and giant crocodiles. Weather.com has practically become a tabloid.

Edit: For the record, I find both of those things interesting, but inappropriate for a weather website.

JennyQ 02-26-2013 09:17 PM

I might get this, although living in SoCal usually means SWDD......Same Weather, Different Day. Ha, even if it is just slightly drizzling, the local news channels start with their "Storm Watch" team.:D

balloonshark 02-26-2013 09:18 PM

Unfortunately The Weather Channel bought wunderground last year :( http://www.wunderground.com/blog/...rynum=2143

Hopefully everything will remain the same and it doesn't become another dumbed down source of weather.

Thanks for the heads up OP. wunderground in my go to weather site when I'm on my computer.

im in the same boat - but how is this any better than NOAA.org? (where weather.com and probably 99% of all media resources get their weather reports from)

I dont see an advantage (although its a free limited membership - but otherwise $10 a year) with this rather than getting information straight from noaa - where they run worldwide weather simulation systems 8-9 times a day and you get their analysis in the forecast discussion?

ChuckG92 02-26-2013 10:23 PM

Let's also recycle SLA, the SA, and the SS into web companies and forget the heritage of the name chosen.

I know I can select the weather station that I want from about 5 choices within two miles of my home. The news usually uses the coastal and inland for temps. I am in between but closer to inland, with this I can pick my particular area. If you play with the site it also has a lot of historical data that can be found.

not worth the effort for me. A browser (firefox or chrome) with adblock removes all the ads. Extended radar times is nice, but .... meh

I've tried to use weather.com. First, it's a pain to look at a certain day. It wants you to look at 10 days or a weekend. When I finally get it to show one day, it starts the with the prior day. I then need to go through page after page just to get to the date I wanted to check. Even then it only shows me a few hours and I need to click next to see more. I have no doubt this is so they can load more ads and generate more revenue. The customer suffers.

With wunderground I can see an entire week all on one page. I can also then click on one date and see the entire day broken down hourly.

PayItForward 02-27-2013 06:32 AM

Does this provide real time radar, or is it delayed like most other websites?

From link:
The growing Internet weather program was given the name Weather Underground, a reference to the 1960's radical group that also originated at the University of Michigan, which had taken its name from the lyrics to Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues, "You don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows."

So they idolize those commie terrorists? No thanks.

NORDO 02-27-2013 07:22 AM

Thanks, OP!

I've always loved wunderground - just a great site.

Not to mention Dr. Jeff Masters is one of the best in the business - his blogs [wunderground.com] are great, especially during tropical storm season.

If you've never read his account of a near-death Hurricane Hunter flight into Hugo [wunderground.com], I highly recommend it.

I've never had a problem with their ads.

It's funny, my business even showed up at the bottom of my screen once. No idea how. :D

Yes, yes and YES!!! It's all that I use. IMHO the new interface is junk. Classic is much easier to read.

arm&hammer 02-27-2013 08:00 AM

With so many free options why bother getting this one????????????
Also my Roku already has the free Weather underground as an app, again why bother signing up for this?
My point is just skip the sign up process and just use other options that is already free.
I don't understand what the added value to me or the rest of society is???

pippypoppy 02-27-2013 08:06 AM

Edited: sorted the problem, it wouldn't work if I signed up using Facebook, but it did work manually.

accuweather is always showing me connection error on my Nexus 7 and I'm using the paid version. It was working fine on the free version..

prazad 02-27-2013 09:04 AM

I just enrolled because it was free. What is the true differentiation here? Other than Ads?

emt 02-27-2013 09:05 AM

I read part of the posts and this site may have already been mentioned for free weather information; but I particularly like it for the wind speed and direction per hour of the day.

http://www.windguru.cz/int/index....sty=m_menu

Click the pull down tab for spots to find the location near you and click go. Longer future wind forecasts are available for a fee.

Bummer, only has 4 locatiosn in my state, and all are lakes (no cities).

raven70 02-27-2013 09:27 AM

Great deal. Miss the old style of the radar though.

COTU 02-27-2013 10:11 AM

weather.gov
Our taxes pay for it so it is ad free. No app, but there is a mobile interface and even text only forecast and small image radar available for those who pay for data by the kb (if you're stuck in 2007). You can read the "forecast discussion" if you want details into what the forecasting models and forecasters are thinking about the forecast. No 10 day forecast like weather.com, but have you ever checked the accuracy of days 8-10 of the weather.com forecast? Temps are almost always near the "average" temps for those days of the year. If you really dig around around in weather.gov, there is a lot of info.

bdams19 02-27-2013 10:22 AM

Do they have an app?

Pottan 02-27-2013 10:31 AM

How is it possible, in this day and age, that some people still don't use ad-blockers when they surf the internet??!

Good Grief.

Luckysevens77 02-27-2013 11:28 AM

My Outlook mail didn't seem to like getting the confirmation email, but got it immediately on my gmail. Thanks.

In terms of tracking wind, this site is also neat.

I like WeatherBug. If you don't like ads, you can use paid version of it (WeatherBug Elite). Or if you rooted your Droid, you can use AdFree to block ads and then use the free WeatherBug Android app.

Um... wasn't the Weather Underground a terrorist organization?

bluestring 02-27-2013 04:14 PM

Thanks! love getting the extra 30 frames on the radar loop.

BargainBob 02-27-2013 05:07 PM

No thanks. I have a window.

snowcrash 02-27-2013 05:38 PM

Signed up just to see what all the fuss is about. For people like me living in Socal, there really is no point to this. I can tell you the weather forecast for each day is, "Sunny. Between 60s and 80s. Once in a long while, when the Space Station needs to do #1, water will drop from the sky overnight and many of us will freak out in the morning commute."

Still, I like Weather.com better. It keeps track and lists multiple locations you have visited on the front page for quick access.

It's not much, but you can also get ad-free weather on the iPhone app with this. If you follow the OP's instructions and then log in on the Weather Underground iPhone app, you get the same "premium" access.

Thanks OP

I could not find the OP's instructions on how to log in on the iphone app. There doesn't seem to be an option anywhere in the app. Does anyone know how?

EDIT: Apparently I was stuck under "settings" under the more tab. If you hit back there is a "Member center" option that will let you sign in.

How does existing member redeem code?

How do you redeem the code if you are already a member of weather underground?

It wants me to renew with no redeem code options.

shizdizzle 03-02-2013 02:44 PM

I wasn't aware that terrorist organizations charge for membership, I think this is just a marketing ploy to get some more "freedom fighters" :D Looks like it worked, all of you seem pretty eager to join.
