Hmm... keep my current i3 laptop with 8gb of memory, integrated graphics and upgrade to an SSD for $150 or pull the trigger on this one with the dedicated video card...
Tough choice. |
This looks like a pretty good deal. I would have bought this if I knew about it two weeks ago.

Strangely enough, the laptops I've had the most build issues with were supposed to be the most durable (alienware m11x, sager np6110). |

"The NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M is a relatively fast middle-class graphics card for laptops. Currently, it can be based on three different chips with different specifications and performance values. The GF108 version (a renamed GT 540M) features 96 shaders while the GF106/GF116 version (a renamed GT 550M) features 144 shaders. Furthermore, the newer 28nm Fermi-based GF117 variant will be available as well with significantly reduced power consumption. All models feature a 128 Bit memory interface for DDR3 graphics memory. As part of the Fermi architecture, the cards support DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.0." This is always a sourch of aggravation when shopping for a laptop with dedicated graphics. Exactly which version of the GT 630M does this unit come with? There is a very significant difference in graphics performance depending on which version you get. Not to mention variations of clock speed within each version. I can't seem to find out the specifics anywhere. Does anyone know this info? |
looking for a relatively cheap laptop to replace my 3.5 year old 900mhz celeron emachines (a former slickdeal in its own right). ideally would like to be able to play some games and do a little solidworks. do i need an i7 for that? the price on this is pretty legit.

But fwiw, even with HD3000 graphics, HD videos lagged a bit and took time to encode through as well. |
bought this, thanks!
|
windows 8 is the deal breaker.
|
What's better, this or the dell inspirion on the front page of SD for 479? Or even the lenovo h430 that was on sale recently.
|
Looks like a solid deal with the i5 processor but from the looks of it, as heavy as a tank for a 14 inch. I dont think you can vo wrong with this one especially with the tax savings on most states.

back when it was like 3% cashback on ebay, one time I bought something for $1200, but turns out seller was fraudulent and ebay removed the transaction, but I still got cashback http://puu.sh/29rXT m_r reb_ates is pretty nice though. sends me $2 worth of holiday stamps every year |

No ultrabook might as well not posted anymore. All laptop will be built as ultrabook going forward. Non-ultrabook priced more than $3-400 is not worth anybody's time.

You should be able to do medium-high settings at 1366x768, unless you're playing the latest Far Cry or something. |

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVID...761.0.html Compare to HD4000, which is half the performance: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Inte...168.0.html Hot Deal! If you're in the market for a 14" laptop. You won't find anything with integrated graphics for cheaper than this. |

looks like a good deal.. but dead deal on amazon... :(

Tax in California forces many to look elsewhere, thanks anyway OP!

Don't know why you guys are spreading crap around. The GT630 is much faster than an HD 4000 (same ballpark as a 6620g) which is already fast enough for some games such as League of Legends. The GT 630 is a rebrand of the GT 540 which is a tad faster than a 6770M which I own. My 6770M can play games like Skyrim, BLOPS2, Batman, at medium high settings at 1600x900. The GT630 let alone the HD4000 would have no problems at this laptops resolution of 1366x768. Unless you were trying to max Metro2033 or Crysis 1... If you want to game on a laptop, turn off shadows and lower anti aliasing or turn it off.

I bought this for my wife and got it set up yesterday. Overall pretty nice machine. I removed the bloatware including intellimemory and installed another 4GB RAM.
Biggest negatives were the lack of backlit keyboard (which I knew ahead of time) and the fact that the wifi card doesn't accept 5Ghz on the N band. Laptop also came with a white lid (not silver) which wasn't a big deal to me. I'd probably throw a SSD drive in there if I was using for myself as the boot up times are pretty lengthy, but once its up and running its a solid machine for $500. |

Also, I'm now seeing a price of $679.29 on this one. What's that about? |

Anytime you can get 2nd class dedicated graphics card and a laptop with decent CPU (i5) for around $500 then everyone should be ok. It's probably worth around $550-600 on a normal good deal. |
This deal is dead. Best price now is $649.99 + $8.49 shipping from a 3rd party seller.
