That's the camel camel. No idea why, but SD has them on permablock.

SD is doing it for your protection of course. ;) If you went and looked at the price on the camel and then decided to click on the amazon link from there then SD wouldn't get it's kickback. It's the same reason they block cashback links. If you get the cashback then SD doesn't.

tennis8363 02-27-2013 08:56 AM

Hmm... keep my current i3 laptop with 8gb of memory, integrated graphics and upgrade to an SSD for $150 or pull the trigger on this one with the dedicated video card...

Tough choice.

ndm2p8 02-27-2013 08:58 AM

This looks like a pretty good deal. I would have bought this if I knew about it two weeks ago.

Is that why? That's silly. I never go through camel--I merely do it to check prices. That is making sense regarding CashBack links--normally I'll click through from SD and then open a CB window (or reverse order)... either way I always get my CB. I figured most sites weren't intelligent enough to limit referrals to just one per transaction--I'm betting SD still gets a cut even with CB active.

Dedicated, but not exactly a great card. With most current games, you'll mostly be limited to low-to-medium settings.

Thanks for the info, based on that it makes sense to go SSD in the laptop for daily non-gaming use... or just buy a desktop if I want to game.

Nope. SD uses the same mechanism as the CB sites. It's just an affiliate, just like the CB sites. So if you get CB, then it bumps out SD. SD is designed to make itself the most amount of money, not to save you the most. I just wish they were honest about it instead of feeding us the "we banned this site for your protection" BS.

Well here is a better comparison, intel 4000 benchmark score is 471 and the 630M is 721, so the card on this samsung is a bit better. Still, it cannot push the newer games unless their set to the lowest settings.

I wouldn't even attempt to play games on low settings with integrated hd4000. The 630m is a bit of a middling graphics card:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVID...761.0.html

I game on my sager np6110 (650m GT), but that's still not that great.

Back in the day (ie 2 years ago ) I was able to get double cashback on purchases from various retailers (ie mr rebates + phatwallet). Haven't tested recently. So you're saying that cashback sites will always take precedence over SD when active? In other words, set active mrbates session, then click link through SD--no kickback for SD?

I've got a recent 7-series, and that thing is built like a tank!

Strangely enough, the laptops I've had the most build issues with were supposed to be the most durable (alienware m11x, sager np6110).

In that situation, I would think no cashback for you. Since you clicked on SD last, they are they ones with the active referral. There is no precedence. It's a game of musical chairs. The one sitting in the chair at the end gets the cash.

Dang buddy, you missed the $250 on the Lenovo last week. That would have been perfect for you. That was a 15.6 incher though. If portability is a big deal for you and you have a budget of $500, wait for a 11.6 ich with a decent CPU like the i3. Ive seen some of those go on sale here for $400 and they should be more coming. I really miss my acer 11.6, the 15.6 feels like a monster in comparison, but it had a 1 gz cpu that couldn't do squat. Now there coming with much better processor's for these notebooks/netbooks.

I religiously check my CB within my mr rebates panel--I prefer them over all others. Not once (in the last 2 years) have I ever failed to have a purchase show up in my panel--and maybe 50% of the time I activate mr rebates before even clicking through the SD link. Try it sometime when you're buying some cheapo good--you'll end up with the same results, I bet. The only times they zero out (as far as I'm aware) are when I make a return or get a partial refund--but that only happens with certain retailers. SD is to blame for at least 90% of my purchases

Quote from notebookcheck.net:
"The NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M is a relatively fast middle-class graphics card for laptops. Currently, it can be based on three different chips with different specifications and performance values. The GF108 version (a renamed GT 540M) features 96 shaders while the GF106/GF116 version (a renamed GT 550M) features 144 shaders. Furthermore, the newer 28nm Fermi-based GF117 variant will be available as well with significantly reduced power consumption. All models feature a 128 Bit memory interface for DDR3 graphics memory. As part of the Fermi architecture, the cards support DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.0."

This is always a sourch of aggravation when shopping for a laptop with dedicated graphics. Exactly which version of the GT 630M does this unit come with? There is a very significant difference in graphics performance depending on which version you get. Not to mention variations of clock speed within each version. I can't seem to find out the specifics anywhere. Does anyone know this info?

looking for a relatively cheap laptop to replace my 3.5 year old 900mhz celeron emachines (a former slickdeal in its own right). ideally would like to be able to play some games and do a little solidworks. do i need an i7 for that? the price on this is pretty legit.

But fwiw, even with HD3000 graphics, HD videos lagged a bit and took time to encode through as well.

What's better, this or the dell inspirion on the front page of SD for 479? Or even the lenovo h430 that was on sale recently.

deymayor 02-27-2013 03:05 PM

Looks like a solid deal with the i5 processor but from the looks of it, as heavy as a tank for a 14 inch. I dont think you can vo wrong with this one especially with the tax savings on most states.

back in the days, you can buy it now on ebay, not pay for it and still get cashback.
back when it was like 3% cashback on ebay, one time I bought something for $1200, but turns out seller was fraudulent and ebay removed the transaction, but I still got cashback

Always assume the worst with these types of laptops. These aren't marketed as gaming machines. They're going to put in the cheapest components

No ultrabook might as well not posted anymore. All laptop will be built as ultrabook going forward. Non-ultrabook priced more than $3-400 is not worth anybody's time.

until ultrabooks sell below the $500 price point regularly, they won't ever go mainstream.

Don't know why you guys are spreading crap around. The GT630 is much faster than an HD 4000 (same ballpark as a 6620g) which is already fast enough for some games such as League of Legends. The GT 630 is a rebrand of the GT 540 which is a tad faster than a 6770M which I own. My 6770M can play games like Skyrim, BLOPS2, Batman, at medium high settings at 1600x900. The GT630 let alone the HD4000 would have no problems at this laptops resolution of 1366x768. Unless you were trying to max Metro2033 or Crysis 1... If you want to game on a laptop, turn off shadows and lower anti aliasing or turn it off.

mick16 03-05-2013 02:49 PM

I bought this for my wife and got it set up yesterday. Overall pretty nice machine. I removed the bloatware including intellimemory and installed another 4GB RAM.

Biggest negatives were the lack of backlit keyboard (which I knew ahead of time) and the fact that the wifi card doesn't accept 5Ghz on the N band. Laptop also came with a white lid (not silver) which wasn't a big deal to me. I'd probably throw a SSD drive in there if I was using for myself as the boot up times are pretty lengthy, but once its up and running its a solid machine for $500.

I just bought a Series 5 for $399, with i3, 750GB, JBL Audio, Integrated graphics, and 4GB memory. I'm throwing another 4GB stick in it and an SSD. I'm not fond of this style Series 5. I stay stick with whatcha got or hold off for better.

Also, I'm now seeing a price of $679.29 on this one. What's that about?

Agree with this guy. This was a great deal. The GT 630m should be very nice at playing most games on medium settings and at only $500 for a 14" portable size budget gaming laptop....not a bad deal. I completely missed this deal, must have gone under the radar for most people.
Anytime you can get 2nd class dedicated graphics card and a laptop with decent CPU (i5) for around $500 then everyone should be ok. It's probably worth around $550-600 on a normal good deal.
