D-Link DCS-930L Wireless Camera $30 @ Amazon [amazon.com]

Scroll down and clip the $20 coupon before adding to cart (limit ONE per account).

Very mixed reviews (60 x 1 star is pretty bad, but there’s also 59 x 5 stars, go figure), but that's still pretty cheap for a wireless ip camera (previous was $39).

hmm, looks.... enticing? Good way to setup a little "security" cam, no? or not recommended use of this?

brandysue44 03-04-2013 07:20 AM

Can this be used on a android? I don't have a ipod anymore. I had 2 stolen from my home. HA!!

deshwasi 03-04-2013 07:23 AM

low light perf is the low-light of this cam. otherwise looks great for price.

Amazon is OOS (2-5 weeks ETD) and now only available from 3d party sellers so the coupon does not apply.

There is still a way to get to a coupon (if you are not in a hurry). Search amazon for "D-Link DCS-930L in electronics" (no double-quotes); when the result come up, click on Amazon.com under Seller filter on the left hand side. This will bring all listings by Amazon only. This camera will be the first one on the left. The coupon is in lower quarter of the screen when you get into this listing.

Axehandle 03-04-2013 07:45 AM

For the price, this is actually a great WiFi-N camera. I have two, and they work seamlessly with a Synology NAS and the MiCasaVerde Vera Lite. The Android app works well, and is easy to use, but requires that the camera be associated with a MyDLink account. The advantage to this is that you don't have to wrangle firewall settings in order to hit your camera directly.

I particularly like the motion detector, which is very configurable and works well.

Negatives & tips:
* Low-light performance is very poor. That's OK for my applications. Note that a single table lamp is not sufficient for a decent picture at night. However, a night-vision version is 2.5-3x higher in price.
* Setup smartly: Use the latest setup wizard [mydlink.com], not the one that came with your camera.
* Update the firmware: Plug the camera in with Ethernet, and make sure to update the firmware to the latest version (1.08 as of this writing [cloudfront.net]). You can do this via the camera's own web interface.

Once I had done this, setup was smooth and without trouble. My father had some trouble, but they were largely tied to his computer's misconfigured firewall & port settings preventing the setup wizard from accessing the camera.

eibgrad 03-04-2013 07:46 AM

Somebody thumbs down the deal because they can't replicate? Knuckleheads. You have to select Amazon as the seller from More Buying Choices, it’s still $50, and you can still add the coupon too!

Yep, very easy. 2-5 weeks for me, but that gives me time to think about it and can always cancel,

I really like the feature of not needing a PC to hook it up to, besides the Android app.

Looks like it may not ship for a month or so, but $32 after tax is a pretty good price.

Repped for the nice mini-review and helpful tips.

Question, is there a way to automate or schedule when this turns on and off? For example weekdays turn on while we're at work between 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM and turn off while we're at home?

I have this camera also, though it was being used more as a "nanny cam"...well, pet cam to watch our dogs. The wireless settings in the camera will stay after loss of power, so a simple timer would work for what you're looking to do on the camera end.

I've used this camera. STAY AWAY from this camera.

This model only has Motion jpeg for video which is very low quality and takes up a RIDICULOUS amount of hard drive space. Over 10 times the space as the .h264 format that the newer model uses.

Stay away from this camera. Its JUNK.

blatantninja 03-04-2013 09:22 AM

I have the 932L and it works great. FYI, download tinycam (free or pro for $3.99) for viewing the camera while inside your own network. Much better than the default D-Link app (though you need that for remote viewing). We use it as a baby monitor and are very pleased.

squish 03-04-2013 09:23 AM

I have one, for $30 I guess you cannot complain. Maybe (the same as me), it will show you a need for wireless camera. Then you will buy a foscam which is a pretty decent camera with night vision and rotates. (Although it is twice the price).

It was easy to get connected to internet and "worked". I had poor video quality and low light was terrible.

Thanks. That was very helpful.

Couple of questions....

1. Is it possible to save video recording to a NAS without installing the "management S/W"?
2. What setup is required at the NAS? Windows share (samba)? FTP?

Thanks in advance.

lnlogauge 03-04-2013 09:31 AM

I just sold one of these on ebay last week. Its a good camera for the money, but the wifi range is pathetic. Plan on keeping it within 30ft of the router, or else it won't connect.

ReverseHandedJO 03-04-2013 09:44 AM

if you need it at night for outside just put a motion sensing light outside and the cam inside in a window.

amax 03-04-2013 09:45 AM

Popped back in stock. Always worth hanging around and refreshing to see if someone's order didn't go through...

j90275 03-04-2013 09:47 AM

This will be my 3rd D-Link DL930. It's very good webcam, auto trigger shots. But down side is night vision is like: no light, all dark shots.

slomer 03-04-2013 09:48 AM

In for one. Hopefully this: delivery: Mar. 29, 2013 - Apr. 13, 2013 doesn't actually take that long but $30 for a wireless camera is the best I have seen. It is going to get some nanny cam duty once it comes in and the ability to move it between rooms without attaching it to a laptop like my webcam will be nice.

ndno 03-04-2013 10:03 AM

Hmmm... should I get this cheapie or just spend another $30 to get a Foscam, which always seems to go on sale for around $70; I like the night vision of the Foscam.

I doubt it. I have an older D-Link w/o night vision. It sits in an upstairs window of a darkened bedroom overlooking my driveway, which is lighted w/ a pair of sconces, 160W ea., mounted on each side of the garage, absolutely nothing is visible. It would have to be VERY bright to work imo.

For all I know you can, but worst case, there are third party apps available for these purposes (e.g., Blue Iris [blueirissoftware.com]). Also, this camera is compatible w/ Synology NAS devices [youtube.com], which supports direct recording as well.

You have absolutely NO idea. The motion jpeg format takes up over 10 times the space and looks awful compared to the newer models that use h.264. You have no idea...

If you have stalkers pulling into your driveway in the middle of the night often enough to want a camera you should probably get one with some night vision!

Yes. But it's also only $30. If you want more features, you have to pay for them. For anyone not even interested in recording, perhaps only as a nanny/pet cam, it's irrelevant. Good to know, of course, but again, may or may not be relevant. And for long term storage, just re-encode them.

DG52 03-04-2013 11:13 AM

This coupon DOES NOT WORK
Even if you go through the checkout & it says it you have a discount (Total before tax: $29.99), I still got this receipt email:

1 "D-Link DCS-930L mydlink-Enabled Wireless-N Network Camera"
Electronics; $49.99
Usually ships in 2 to 5 weeks

Sold by: Amazon.com LLC
Items: $49.99
Shipping & handling: $5.74
Super Saver Discount: -$5.74
-------------------------------------------
Total before tax: $49.99

Called Amazon & they said there is no $20 coupon even though it showed up in checkout.

I've used this camera. STAY AWAY from this camera.

This model only has Motion jpeg for video which is very low quality and takes up a RIDICULOUS amount of hard drive space. Over 10 times the space as the .h264 format that the newer model uses.

Stay away from this camera. Its JUNK.

Which model? Link?

This part, knumbskull:
"...as the .h264 format that the newer model uses"
Reading is fundamental ...but, is severly affected by the mental part you bring along.

works tons better (great night vision) and has p&t

by "p&t", do you mean automatic/wireless motor control??

I saw this iprobot 3 [youtube.com] at twice the price, but it has higher resolution and wider view.

Soulbox 03-04-2013 12:02 PM

Yes... Pan and Tilt,.. basically you could wirelessly control and move your lens to see the whole room...

there are tons of sellers selling similar spec cameras on ebay... I bought 5 from 3 different manufacturers (similar looking cameras, different brand, seller) and they all work great.

digital zoom on the iprobot looks great btw!

the night vision works REALLY well. I turn my lights off at night, but I can see my pets almost as clear as day...

I would like to add that If you are looking for off site storage, you can check out http://www.sensr.net. Im sure there are others out there that are free or lower cost, and if you have your own website and hosting you could probably set it up yourself.

A great deal exactly, thanks.

I just set this up and I have to admit it's pretty sweet for the low price. Now I get to see what dog keeps jumping up on my counters....

on the ebay cams, does it have an app that lets you access multiple cameras that you have on your network? I couldn't really find any info on the listing

Mine showed up yesterday. Upgraded the firmware, it works fine for what it is.
As a bonus, get the mydlink Lite software through the Amazon store - it's free and you get a $1 Amazon credit -- who cares if it works ;)
