how does one check new HDDs for errors and to run it through an intensive test to make sure it doesn't die on you in a week…windows 7 is the OS on my SSD that I would be using to check these…I assume I need to partition them first or do I not have to?

Run the drive through the manufacturer's utility. It will have a "Long Test" (or similar wording) that is thorough enough.

I can vouch for the Caviar Black, though I have the 750GB notebook version. I have it for more than a year now and have had no problem whatsoever. I use HDSentinel to check the health of my HDD. So far it is still 100%. BTW, it has 5 year warranty so you shouldn't worry too much.

I'm thinking the velociraptor is faster. SSD much faster...probably fastest for 7200 rpm drive though.

i am also curious as to what makes this 7200rpm drive special or any better than the others. is it the 64mb cache?

For me, it's the 5 year warranty. Mechanical drives have a nasty tendency to fail unexpectadly

Will the 14 ms seek time on the Toshiba hard drive make a big difference?

While looking into it (and learning that seek time and average latency aren't related) I found out that the Toshiba has the same average latency (4.17 ms) as this Caviar Black. Sorry for the misdirection.

A 3 year warranty is good enough for me, so I bought 2 of the Toshiba.
