it gets pretty good reviews at $100. It has been recommended by many SDers in the past. I'd buy one if I didn't already have a SGS3

SGS3, one phone, to rule them all. :worship: (until the SGS4 comes along, of course) By the way, if this were about $20-$25 cheaper, I'd buy a few for eBay / resale as they go for $120-$140 in new and unlocked condition. |

I have one that I gave to my mom after I upgraded but it's actually 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S3 cores and you can't overclock it any more than that. Pretty fast phone in general though some issues with storing things on the SD card because of the skin and Google Music flips out and tries to store all the cached songs on the main app partition and uses up all your space, oh and Google Voice integration is totally broken in the dialer (voicemails crash the dialer, you see the calls as going to the google voice # in the logs, etc.) It's a good phone for the money no doubt but definitely not high end and the camera is plainly terrible.

I switched to android sg3 from iphone and it was a great regret. If you're thinking of doing it, stick with a jailbroken iphone. The 'freedom' they say android phones have is a joke. Yeah, there's great freedom for developers, but none for the user. I could customize and tweak the iphone to exactly how I wanted it, but with android you're forced with the decisions the dev's decide upon with their own roms.

Best smartphone out there for about $100...
Ok, I've purchased six of these over the past few months for myself, family, and friends. I'm our unofficial IT cellphone guy, so I know these phones very well.
Here are our reviews: DEVICE: New Pantech Burst Android (myself and my friends call these our $100 iPhone killers) from eBay & CL for ~$100 (TIP: to get the phones unlocked by AT&T if you don't buy one unlocked, call them and tell them you bought it from a friend and are headed to Europe and you need the code, but you're going to activate with AT&T as soon as you return. Meh. It's ok as a phone goes. Probably cheaper then a 2yr contract and $99 for a cheap flip phone.
Low resolution, low Amoled screen. This is basically similar to the Nexus S... even looks the same kinda. |
I bought one of these (in used very good condition) from this same seller about 5 months back. Pretty sure it was and still is the best value Android ICS phone out there. Been very happy with the phone.

I have this phone. It has treated me well so far for the last 6mo. Right now I have it on the Straight Talk unlimited plan and I get 4g speeds, and almost always have a signal. I tried T-mobile and it wasn't good. I had maybe E or 1G speeds at best. T-mobile uses different frequencies than what this phone does for their high end speeds. I have a lot of music and a couple movies on it. The battery lasts almost all day if I'm just listening to music. If I use firefox or watch videos it drains the battery about like most phones. I would almost say that this would be a decent buy as just an mp3 player and wifi cruiser even if you don't want it as a phone.
|
Mine is super slow and buggy. Always crashes, I would avoid this phone for anything more than $20 aa a backup or burner for foreign travel.
|
This may sound odd, but how is the audio quality on these? Is anyone using theirs as an ipod and a phone?

can you plug this phone in to a computer and have it act as a modem and surf on the PC
this way you can charge the phone and surf |
bought this as a backup phone, rooted and running Gizmolord ROM, even better than most $400 dollar phones I would say. The ROM is pretty stable and the battery is better than or equal to my S3 I would say. I have sold my S3 now.

Excellent phone for the price. Check out our previous deal thread. Has lots of information:
http://slickdeals.net/f/5198506-P...d-100-eBay |
I got in on this deal first time around last year - fantastic bang for the buck at that point in time for sure
Battery life does suck indeed - charging it up 2 to 3 times a day is the norm... Sometimes there is a problem with the phone charging - it will eventually charge but it can be a nuisance. Performance is great - very snappy indeed. Speakerphone is essentially useless - I think this is a problem caused by the microphone - I can't use audio recordings of anything - it's simply not clear and completely hopeless. I have other cheap phones that record very well as a dictaphone. I get 8m download speed using AT&T with Straighttalk and shows 4G on the display. Build quality is very acceptable - an iPhone looks pretty clunky by comparison in my opinion. You can do Skype video calls via WiFi pretty clearly but quality was not great with mobile network in my case. By yourself a cheap headset and this is a very decent smartphone apart from the battery life... |
I have it too, and I love it. I don't feel like 4" is small by any means, homescreen is well done and everything fits great, good for book reading, video and other staff. I have not encountered any problems with it at all. Easily unlocked, rooted, upgraded to ICS, killed some ATT staff on it to make it even faster. I love screen, cameras, storage size and SPEED. The only downside for me - 4 buttons on the bottom are not always responsive, sometimes you have to press button several times to register touch. But it's not that big of a problem most of the times. For $100 it's the best ever I have seen, for a new phone. I have purchased a few more to resell

I bought the red burst from them last year. It's a good phone for the price. Everything looks new. There were no scratches or blemishes, but when I went to AT&T to get a new sim card, the guy said it was a display model. He couldn't tell if it was a demo or strictly display. It was actually a replacement phone because the first one had a vibrator issue. The store was really good with the exchange. They sent out the replacement and return shipping label pretty quick. So they have good customer service, but I don't think their description of NEW is accurate.
|
And since the first thread that was created months ago and until now in this new thread - no one can confirm if this thing has already been upgraded to ICS OFFICIALLY without rooting.

Just because you are lazy to learn by yourself you are blaming the devs ? Most of the devs on xda learned by their own and they just share their work. Its your choice to use their work or not. There are plenty of guides to learn to mod your android phones. Jail breaking an iphone is joke. |

I am loving my T-Mobile Value Plans. Yes, IT IS a commitment (contract), but since I am using it for family (3 lines), and only one needs data ($10 for unlimited DATA, upto 2GB full speed then throttle) - it makes perfect sense for me. Only thing I liked about ATT was their coverage. T-Mobile has "some" coverage issues, but we still have above average coverage.. |
I want to get one of these with the proposed T-Mobile spectrum reframe but I am waiting to see if a next-gen nexus 4 is released with the new Qualcom LTE chip. At this point if I find one cheap on CL i'd pick it up.

Read tons of reviews on this and decided to go for it. Hopefully I don't run into the band charger problem some have had with it.
I purchased the red one though from the same seller and will use it as a Gophone. May try the Airvoice Wireless $10 per month plan since I don't talk a lot anyway. Been looking for something that was cheap and buried my Pantech Crossover. This does that VERY effectively. heh |

likely dumb question here - I have no interest in the phone capabilities for the time being, though eventually would like to set it up for international use (when I travel occasionally).
Have wanted to get away from Apple ipod touch for music, occasional pictures more so due to the higher price for those products (lower resolution unless I pay more). So, ST use for music/photos, how does it fare? And, can I use it for wifi only without setting up a contract on any provider? |
yeah i went back and forth on impulse buying this, would probably make a nice little backup phone/pmp. but the price has jumped up twice now. F em.

I have a charger in the office at my desk, one in the car and one at home, so I'm seldom without charging options. It might simply be that my battery is at the bottom end of the scale compared to others. I suppose it's not that big a deal to buy a spare battery or two on eBay if you are out and about for the whole day. My GF is saving about $35 per month since getting this phone and using Straighttalk Unlimited compared to her "limited" plan with Verizion and a "free" phone. Compared to my old Samsung Galaxy Apollo - battery life is horrendous - it only needed charging up once per day (at night) and was used most of the day. Looking at the battery use on the Pantech today here is the breakdown of power use: Bluetooth = 23% Cell Standby = 23% Phone Idle = 22% Maps = 10% Gallery 6% Camera 6% Etc.. I've not actually used it, apart from going to the settings so far :look: |
Quote:
I've never had an iPhone, so really don't see what the major differences are other than cost..? I can take and make phone calls.. I can watch videos I can surf the net I can download files I can video conference I can do OBD testing of my car via BT ...etc., etc..what am I missing out on with an Android device? |
Verizon is typically more expensive. I pay just under $45 (including taxes and discount) for my share of the family share plan on Verizon which includes unlimited unthrottled 4glte. I have limited minutes, but never come close to it, and use Google voice for texts.

I tried this phone a few months ago on Straighttalk service with both Gingerbread and ICS. At times, it ran very smooth and pretty fast. But almost always, it would eventually bog down and I would have to shut down apps right and left. Also, the battery life was hit and miss depended on settings.
Overall the experience was frustrating in that I loved it when it worked, but it did not work for me enough of the time. I got my money back by reselling on fleabay so no real loss. right now I am using my wife's old iPhone 3GS, unlocked much more satisfied. |

that's the thing...i have used over 60gb a month before, no sweat on Verizon, plus Verizon does have the best total network coverage. But of course, you are paying a premium for Verizon. Luckily for me, i use little minutes and no texting, so pricewise, Verizon isn't really costing me much more than other plans, since other carrier's unlimited plans include unlimited talk and text, which I have no real use for. But for cases of high talk and text usage with lots of data, I could see how it could be quite costly on Verizon. |

Op here,
i just received mine this morning, Have to say this is a great phone for the price. About to upgrade to ICS :) |
Besides the speakerphone, how's the call quality? Cnet says it's pretty bad...
|
Just great. This phone does not mount on Windows 8 due to their being no drivers. I have to pull the damn memory card out just to put files on it now. Pantech PC Suite doesn't even work.
|
Quote:
I'd say in 99% of cases it's perfectly OK to Good. There's sometimes a situation where the call quality is fairly unclear but I'm not sure if this is something to do with call signal strength. That's only ever been while chatting with my GF (with the same phone) and she, or I, have been in a low signal strength area. |
I've also recently noticed that BT transfer of photos on my Win7 laptop doesn't work - works perfectly on my company XP laptop.
Seems to be a driver issue that I've not had any luck in resolving. I just use a cable as a work around... |

Pantech Burst with PTel...
Quote:
PTel, in conjunction with Google Voice has a few minor issues: -call quality is acceptable, but not great... getting volume right seems to affect voice, touchy -When calling over WiFi with GrooVeIP, the calls are fantastic, but when you call another person, a bug causes your Pantech Burst to automatically switch to "speaker mode." Just quickly click the speaker icon twice to turn it off--annoying but not the end of the world. Contact http://www.snrblabs.com/ to report this bug (the more, the better). -The speakerphone is horrible FOR THE PERSON ON THE OTHER END and they will experience echo. Fix anyone? -Feedback that the camera sucks is greatly overexaggerated, imho, seems to work fine for a 5mp phone camera. I'm looking for similar feedback about using this phone on the $30 T-Mobile unlimited data plan (100 voice mins., unlimited text, unlimited data w/1st 5g at 4g LTE where available). Get your free microSIM here: http://slickdeals.net/f/5905524-F...gn=tu-9999 Then order the plan here: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.co...y-4g-plans (scroll down to the $30/mo. plan) . |
I missed the 100.00 price point and wanted to buy 3 so I've been holding off and checking back periodically on the ebay page to see when it will drop again. Usually it says "Limited Quantity available" but yesterday there was a time when it said 9,500 or so available. Oops. They've got a LOT of them still so it WILL drop again, probably sooner rather than later after they get the first big batch of orders shipped out.

Seems like a great deal on a pretty beefy budget smartphone. This and the LG Optimus L9 have very solid specs for the money.
LG Optimus L9 wins on screen, battery life, and GPU. Pantech Burst on internal storage and CPU clock speed (though the CPUs are closer than they appear, since the Burst's Snapdragon 3 CPU needs higher clock speed to get the same performance as the L9's Cortex A9 CPU). Both apparently have problems with the stock ROMs in a number of areas. The folks over at XDA have solved many of them. I got my fiance an L9 several months ago, but at this price I may have been tempted to get her the Burst instead. For her usage/needs, the savings probably would have been worth it. If you are willing to put some time into fixing the phone's quirks, this may even be a great budget/backup phone for a power user. |

Ok, I successfully rooted my Pantech Burst using this youTube tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLEvsG0ECF4 Just follow the directions, he's really good about taking his time and explaining step-by-step. NOTE: I did get the <waiting for device> message after getting into "fastboot boot prestoroot.img" at the command prompt... DON'T PANIC, just go back to the device manager and find the "Pantech Android ADB Interface Ver1" file (should be there if you properly installed the Pantech PC Suite). Just make sure you click on "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer," because I kept missing that and got frustrated. Now that it's rooted... Can someone please provide a clear path to what to do next? I want to install Jelly Bean, as lllGurulll suggested, so that would be great if you could steer us in the proper direction, because as you mentioned, I'm still stuck with the ICS upgrade. Also, instruction on how to install CM10 would be much appreciated. TIA |

Next would be install clockwork recovery mod (register for gizmolord): http://forum.gizmolord.com/androi...ech-burst/ Then install CM10 (jelly bean): http://forum.xda-developers.com/s...?t=2128303 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE ::: -First of all , If In case Any loss happened Neither the Dev team or me is responsible for that . Though Nothing should happen 99.9% . -Boot into CWM Recovery . Either 5.x or 6.x ( by Attn1 one [Preferred]) . Everything will be safe . Don't believe in any myths of cwm 6.x is dangerous and all . For reference -> These recoveries are one my self tested . -Clear Wipe Data / Factory reset and clear dalvik cache from advance menu . -Install from SD/EXT-Sd ( Where you put simply select that one) -Choose zip and confirm action . -Reboot . Since CM10 is still under development, I will wait to try to install. |
FYI, to anyone who gets this phone, get screen protectors before you start using it. After two days of light use and carrying in an empty pocket, my screen is already showing scratches.

I've been using mine since around October without a screen protector and there isn't a single solitary scratch on the screen.... It's in my jeans pockets most of the time but I always make sure there are no keys or coins to scratch the screen. |

fwiw, i got the "great condition" one from this seller, sent me one that looks like it was dragged behind a car, seller said it was normal to have one or two blemishes. I did not consider that 2 blemishes, so I returned it and ordered a new one from another seller for 120$. still waiting for the refund, and still waiting for the other seller. such is the slickdeals hunt, sometimes you luck out, sometimes, well, lemon is putting it mildly. |
