I updated the link in the IP...not sure what happened.

Currently out of stock online, but many stores have plenty (hence the B&M in the title)

IN-STORE CODE: 16156
ONLINE/PHONE: 70847

Ray97 03-06-2013 05:27 PM

should've just kept your 4 year old notebook for porn and be virus free.....!

ridestp 03-06-2013 05:27 PM

Comes with an external DVD drive.

ckeusa 03-06-2013 05:27 PM

Forgot to mention that this also comes with an external DVD-RW drive. The current FP deal does not. Assuming you can find one in stock, this is a much better deal.

Yeap saw this deal earlier! Great deal if you have a laptop to trade in. Any working laptop shoudl get at least $100 right?

illuminati 03-06-2013 05:45 PM

How does the trade in work?

Yes, any working laptop or netbook gets a minimum of $100.

Comp625 03-06-2013 05:47 PM

Wow...and to think, I paid $650 (full price) for a less capable Atom tablet (Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2). I needed the extreme portability and digitizer.

However...this S200E looks REALLY tempting!

I have an old 5 year old Acer laptop with a Celeron processor. Maybe 80GB HD. How nice to get $100 for it. :)

Yes, you buy the computer first. Then, you complete a claim form online for your old one. They send you a prepaid UPS label, which you use to mail in the old computer. Then, you get a visa prepaid card in the mail. Not too bad at all!

ParticleJG 03-06-2013 05:54 PM

The $100, is it toward any touchscreen or the 4 listed when you open the link?

PeterLu 03-06-2013 05:58 PM

good share, thanks for posting, I have got my Mac book recently.

Not TC'ing, just saying...

The FP deal is tax free (I believe) for most. $375 + tax would be pushing $400. The FP deal has free S&H and is readily available for all.

The trade-in option is nice, but...

Again, not crapping on the deal -- I just think it's about the same deal overall with potentially less hassle from Adorama.

You raise some good points...although the Adorama computer doesn't come with an external drive, and any returns to Staples should be easier. If you have a trade-in, this is probably the way to go...if not, Adorama is a little easier.

Adorama model comes with bluetooth 4.0. Staples model has no bluetooth.

I didn't notice the free external drive. That's a nice perk.

I have some Staples stores near me that MIGHT have stock. And I get 20% off Stapes gift cards through a work perk. That'd make this ~$320 out of pocket. But since I'd prefer power and bigger screen size over touch screen functionality, this isn't a deal I'd jump on.

kwikside 03-06-2013 06:59 PM

Can you trade in more than 1 device for 1 transaction? I have a couple old laptops I was going to toss.

I have an old working laptop but the battery does not hold any charge.
Is it eligible for trade in ??

SGogo 03-06-2013 07:09 PM

The trade in terms look a bit onerous.

Looks like they can turn around and give you less for you trade pretty easily... but then it would be too late to return the new one...

I'm seeing four qualifying purchases, none of which states the Asus one.
They're the Samsung 7series, Acer v5, HP Envy20-d030, and Microsoft Surface 32gb tablet.
Terms do say any windows 8 touch screen, which is then contradicting..

I see whole list now!

Phoeniix 03-07-2013 12:02 AM

FYI about the trade in program:

Any Netbook & Any Notebook $100
  1. It should be working (including power supply and battery), and clear of your personal data
  2. Laptops, Desktops, Workstations and Tablets not listed above are not accepted for trade in.
  3. If any of the items required to make your trade in device fully operational are missing from the package received or if the trade in device is not qualifying, you may receive a revised valuation by email or your claim may be rejected.

Seems sketchy on really receiving the min $100. It says any notebook and doesnt list laptops as an option.

Battery Replacement

According to a Q&A question reply in the Staples details of the S200E you might want to be aware that the for the S200E:
"The memory is not upgradeable, and the battery is built in so it is not user replaceable."

Mechfire 03-07-2013 05:21 AM

Good time to grab a Microsoft Surface RT 32gb [staples.com].

Doing the math, you could have for $303.75.

$499.00 - Surface RT 32gb
-75.00 - coupon
-16.99 - 4% cb (s@h)
- 4.25 - 1% cb Chase Freedom
-100.00 - notebook trade
------------
$303.75 Total

3 - 4 hours is normal. Depending on the CPU usage.

mitun733 03-07-2013 10:07 AM

Just picked an open box model up for 385 including tax in cali..

Salespeople were horrible though. Went in at 8:30 am and they took 20 minutes just to find the tool to get the laptop off of its display, and then couldn't figure out the password to restore the demo stuff on it. I ended up paying for it and leaving because the manager that knew the password wasn't coming in till 11 am.. The earliest they said i could get it was 11:30, which is pretty ridiculous. but its hard to argue such a great laptop for the price, not going back to Staples though..

minghi 03-07-2013 10:07 AM

got one display model for $353 OTD w/tax in NJ after 10% display discount & $75 coupon :)

HaC 03-07-2013 10:18 AM

About the battery life on this thing... The power supply is as small as mobile chargers. Carrying them wouldn't be a problem. And 4 hours is more than enough for the University, get through 2 classes.

No, not really, since this deal IS all about the trade in making the total $275, and of course there are a lot of people with Staples Rewards looking for a way to use them up.

It's not necessarily a better deal with Staples or Adorama, depending on whether you've got an old netbook lying around or some Rewards that have to be spent soon or not.

I get that you didn't mean to crap on this deal, but don't you think leaving out the most important part of the deal and comparing what's left over is kinda sorta thread crapping? Because then you're not actually comparing the deal in the OP to the FP one, you're comparing a deal of your own making with the FP one, and then saying the one in the OP isn't all that great.

Me, personally, I DO happen to have an old netbook that I'd happily trade for $100 credit AND some Staples rewards sitting in my account. $275, probably around $300 after taxes, less my rewards seems like a good deal. I may just swing by Staples later today and see if they've any left. I have a nice notebook, but it's heavy. This might be better, and then I could sell the notebook...hmm...

coldwinter 03-07-2013 11:12 AM

For those who got the laptop from your local store, did you call the store to check their inventory before your trip? It shows "low stock clearance item" everywhere, so I am afraid it's out of stock everywhere.

1) Not everybody has a laptop/tablet laying around to trade in.
2) For those who do have laptops/tablets laying around to trade in, some are probably worth more than $100 on CL/E-bay/etc. -- even after time/fees/etc.

The frontpage deal could be readily had by anybody and everybody. Tax free for most (if not all) and free shipping. Not hunting. No hoping. No gas. And since not everybody (I would estimate that few people, actually) have tablets/laptops laying around that are worth sub-$100 for a trade in, again, the "I got it for $275" deal isn't available to most people. Even then, you didn't get the computer for $275 OTD. You got it for $275 (after trade-in "refund" down the road = more hassle) + tax + you're no longer in possession of your laptop/tablet. If your laptop was truly worth $0, then yes, you got this for $275.

If all of the stars align and you have a ton of rewards + a junk laptop/tablet that you don't care about, plus a store with stock nearby then a great deal for you and anybody else who this fits. My point was simply this -- the FP deal was available to anybody who wanted it with no "hoping they have it in stock". And "trade-ins" aside (since Adorama didn't require a trade-in to "sweeten" the deal), the price points were almost exactly the same since the Staples one would have tax.

I totally agree. I racked up over 600 in Staples GC from their crazy 15 for 100 GC deal back in November. Been waiting for a decent lappy deal from them.

I also got an extremely old Centrino chip lappy that I can trade in.

All in, it's a $307 lappy. I'll pay with Staples GC and try to also get a 200 Visa GC while I'm at it to fully exit out of my Staples GCs and still get a $15 check.

I called up some stores, most are out in Dallas but one of them is holding a new one for me and I'll pickup in a couple of hours.

It's not the best laptop but it's a decent small laptop for travel and surfing for the wife. My lappy is a 2 year old Vaio Z i5. Love it. Hate the look of the new Z.

I called about 6 and visited 1(all of which showed low stock clearance item" on inventory checker)

5 were out. no floor or open box either.
I visited one where someone just bought the floor model but for only 5% off.
I called another which is 25min away and they had a new one and are holding it for me. I'll pickup in a couple of hours.

I would suggest you call and check and hold if possible.

No idea as I didn't look into the trade-in details as I wasn't interested in the deal nor do I have a laptop/tablet to trade in.

I hear you. I have two laptops that could be traded, but one is dicey as whether it needs to load windows or not and the screen does not work unless you external monitor. And then if a trade-in was excepted I would have to get the laptop I want on it would be a no go.

OK ... probably a dumb question, but have mercy please!

With all this talk about the limited time of use with the battery ... I'm wondering ... does this unit also run off of AC?

I would be pretty sure it does. I've yet to see a computer that doesn't.

Yes, absolutely... Just like any other laptop.

I ended up paying for it and leaving because the manager that knew the password wasn't coming in till 11 am.. The earliest they said i could get it was 11:30, which is pretty ridiculous. but its hard to argue such a great laptop for the price, not going back to Staples though..

Update...

They called me @ 11am saying that they still made no progress on getting into the system to wipe the demo crap off of it. They said they probably wouldn't be able to make any progress on it until 2pm when someone who MIGHT know how to do it comes in.. Don't know if anyone else has had trouble like this with Staples, but I for one am never going back..

I almost purchased a demo display w/additional 5% as well, and was told I could purchase but would have to pick up next day to remove the demo programs. No thx, plus I was reading that these have an internal battery and u have to send in to Asus if u need replaced out your pocket, I wouldn't mind if I purchased brand new, but a demo is on all day 7 days a week, jus something to think about, but maybe purchase extended warranty just in case if getting a display demo model

Thank you so much for your suggestion! Only one local store has some open box left. But they are not going to hold one for me. They said that I have to go there to see if they are sellable...

I visited one where someone just bought the floor model but for only 5% off.
I called another which is 25min away and they had a new one and are holding it for me. I'll pickup in a couple of hours.

I would suggest you call and check and hold if possible.

Scored 1 NIB @ 48124 for $396 out the door.

First impressions of Windows 8 on this box is snappy.
Glossy screen, meh - but easy to wipe.
Verdict still out on the non-removable battery.

Hoping that I can get $100 for my Dell Mini 9 that I paid $135 for many years ago...

I guess it depends on your local store and employees there, the guy at my store said the discount is 5% for display model, 10% only if it is missing something

You may be surprised what your old laptop (even broken) can fetch on Ebay, usually better than trade-in, but a little more hassle. I've sold some outright, and parted out a few laptops. Even a 7-year old beast netted me > $100, usually make more parting them out.

my 2005 VGN-S360P that I bought for $1400 has 3 completed sales on ebay for $31,$75, $27.

So I got my money's worth.

Depends on how long ago you made your purchase and the store manager. If it's more than 14 days ago, you might have a very hard time convincing them to do it. YMMV

Bandin03 03-07-2013 02:54 PM

Hmm...I have an old laptop that WILL work if Windows is reinstalled. I lost the disc long ago and never had any desire to fix it up, any chance I would get any considerable credit from it?

As far as the deal goes, I can't help but think the touchscreens are a waste of money. I've never used one, so maybe they're life-changing, but it just seems like this same laptop would be closer to $325 on a good deal if it didn't have that touchscreen.

FormerYooper 03-07-2013 04:03 PM

Just went to our local Staples in Alamogordo, NM. The only one left was the display model and it was pretty beat up. CSR told me to just buy the extended warranty (at $170) and if anything goes wrong with it, they'd replace it. No thanks! I have an aversion to display models & think they are just asking for trouble. Anyhow - what a sweet system and what a super deal! Played around with the display for about a half hour and loved it. I would have bought it on the spot if they had a new one!

i used to think that touchcreen only belongs in tablets but this notebook made me a believer, especially at this price. first of all, win 8 is blah without a touchscreen. second, the build quality of this one is superior compared to any notebook under $500 and lastly, the perfect size for portability. it is powerful enough to be an everyday device and definitely offers the best value for anything under $400, with or without a touchscreen.

Two completely different products and uses. Windows RT Tablet versus a Windows 8 Computer. It really depends on what you need it for. The surface is very nice although it doesn't do enough for me to justify buying it.

Just got back from Staples empty handed because they wouldn't give me discount on the floor model (it was the only one left). The assistant manager keep saying since the computer was on clearance he couldn't give a discount for it being open. I think he was just feeding me some BS.

Also somebody had put a password on the floor model and they said I would have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to pick it up after they restored it. Another reason why I pass on it.

Buckeyefan 1 03-07-2013 04:52 PM

Local Staples said he's had 6 calls in the last half house for this laptop. No discounts on floor models. Wish I saw this deal earlier. Have an old Compaq to get rid of. Columbus people - Reynoldsburg has 2 left. Karl Rd. and Westland Mall have some, but they closed an hour ago.

I agree - have a 11.6" HP and it's a great size for surfing in bed. Not sure about spreadsheets, but everything else it's a really nice size. This is a killer deal.

I bought one floor model for 10% discount and -$75, total with tax $353.

They have 14 days return policy with no re-stocking fee. The laptop comes with 1 yr warranty. They will give me the laptop tomorrow, clean from outside and inside. It comes with an external optical drive which is in the laptop carton bubble wrapped.

How often do you use the touchscreen? And what's your opinion on the screen resolution and reflection? Does the screen gets smudged with fingerprints? I'm kicking myself for missing this deal.

No argument about the applicability, though I am surprised that someone who's been on the site as long as you have doesn't seem to realize just how popular Staples deals are and how many many MANY people have Staples Rewards to burn. Even without the laptop trade in, the chance to use up rewards makes this a better deal for many of them.

And that's the point, SO WHAT if this deal isn't available for "everyone, with no hassle". I agree that it shouldn't be on the FP for that reason, but to say it's not a good deal because only certain people meet the criteria to take advantage is wrong. On it's merits, as it was outlined in the OP, it's a great deal for people it applies to.

A lot of people TD deals for the wrong reasons, and one of the worst is that the deal doesn't apply to them personally. Maybe because they don't have that store nearby, or they personally aren't interested in the item, or in this case, they, personally, don't happen to have an old laptop lying around to trade in. None of those are legitimate reasons to TD a deal. Heck, this isn't even a YMMV deal, it's doable by anyone that it applies to (or at least it was, by now a lot of the stores are OOS. No different than any other hot deal. Even Walmart goes OOS on the best deals.)

Well, if you, personally, don't like to jump through hoops, that's fine. You may make enough money that your time is more valuable, or whatever. But for those that are willing to do so, a lot of the best deals on SD require some hoop jumping to get the extreme savings, and yes, those are often YMMV deals. This one, when posted, was no more YMMV than any other deal.

My point was simply this -- the FP deal was available to anybody who wanted it with no "hoping they have it in stock". And "trade-ins" aside (since Adorama didn't require a trade-in to "sweeten" the deal), the price points were almost exactly the same since the Staples one would have tax.

I don't get that part... the stars don't have to align in any crazy way here. The deal was readily available nationwide for people that had some rewards (TONS of people) or an old laptop lying around (a lot of people). Stock wasn't short, it wasn't clearance or YMMV.

Again, just because it didn't apply to you personally, and applied to a "target group" doesn't affect it's worth as a deal. This IS a hot deal, $100 or so cheaper than the Adorama one. Sorry if you didn't happen to be able to take advantage of it personally, but I was, as well as quite a lot of other folks.

This isn't "SlickDeals for the entire country" This is "SlickDeals", and a lot of the deals, often the best ones, will have a limited group of people that can snag them. That's just life, not a reason to TD a deal, or rip out the heart of it and then say, gosh, after I trashed the most important bits, well, the deal was soso. That IS thread crapping.

Grabbed a display for 10% off. Ended up buying the extended warranty for $210, you get it back as a staples store credit after 2 year if you don't use the warranty. didn't seem so bad at that time but now I'm having second thoughts.. $210 to insure $375 seems silly.
I was just looking and the rep sold me warranty for $400-$450 laptop.. Shouldn't they have sold me the one for $300-$400 cause the cost after coupon was $330? that one will be $40 cheaper.

barginbin 03-07-2013 07:28 PM

Now that this deal is off the table and no one can get taken out by me at the store, what should I expect for two laptops that could be traded, one(Sony) is dicey as whether it needs to load windows or not and the screen does not work unless you external monitor? The other is a Dell that loads windows and works fine, but is 10 years old?

I NEVER said it wasn't a good deal. The OP was, in some regards, suggesting that it was comparable to, if not better than, the FP deal. I was simply pointing out why the FP deal had POTENTIAL advantages over his (readily available) or how it was "a wash" cost-wise (i.e. tax at Staples). Plain and simple. Just because I think the FP deal has advantages -- or is a "wash" -- doesn't mean I think the OP's deal is a bad deal. I was simply clarifying for him/raising points that he may not have thought of.

I've said as much -- for those who have tons of rewards to burn and/or a laptop/tablet that they absolutely don't care about, then it's a great deal -- even better than the FP one.

If great savings can be obtained by jumping through hoops, then I'm all for it as well. But in this case, the Adorama deal could be had WITHOUT jumping through hoops (no hunting, no gas, no driving). So all other things being equal, the Adorama deal was the better deal. If somebody had LOTS of Staples rewards (i.e. more than a handful of dollars worth), then yes, it totally makes sense to "jump through the hoops" if one can be had locally. If not, your "savings" with certificates that could be used on any other Staples deal went down the drain as you burned gas in your car to pick up the laptop.

Actually, I looked at my local stores, and of the eight closest Staples stores, four said they had ZERO, the other four said "low stock clearance item". That's not readily available nationwide...and yes, that IS a clearance item. (picture/proof attached -- I've stacked the second half of the list of eight stores)

This is where you are fundamentally wrong, IMHO. It is a good, possibly hot deal. But it is NOT $100 cheaper than the Adorama one. It's not like you are just cashing in a $100 coupon. You are giving them product that has VALUE. How much value varies from person to person. There are few working laptops/tablets (unless absolute dinosaurs) that can't fetch $100. So you gave up that product of value (perhaps greater than $100) to "save" $100. So did you REALLY save $100? Did you really beat Adorama's deal by $100? If your laptop/tablet had a value of ZERO dollars...then yes. If your laptop/tablet was only worth $50, then yes, you saved $50 versus Adorama. If your laptop/tablet was worth $75, then you "saved" $25. See where I'm going with this? I've sold "dinosaur" laptops that I was given for free for $150 on Craiglist with no problems. Just because the laptop/tablet is old and you don't like it doesn't mean it doesn't have any value.

EDIT:
If Buckeyefan1 is correct in his thinking here, you're not even guaranteed $100. Staples can give you less than $100 for your trade-in and/or refused to pay to ship it back. Not sure if that is true or not. If it is, then your "additional savings" could be ZERO (you get what your item is truly worth and/or might even LOSE money to get your item back if you want it returned).

That's true with all Ultrabooks. But you can swap them out with a little know how, and some youtube videos. But keep in mind, batteries for Ultrabooks are pricey - $60 to $120.

The other is a Dell that loads windows and works fine, but is 10 years old?

From what I've read here, I would guess that the first one is a no-go. The second one, despite being older, should work.

Don't quote me on that or shoot the messenger, though. :)

We find with windows 8 we use the touchscreen a ton. reflection not a problem, if it is for you, you can get a matte scratch resistor, that helps with prints too.

I bought my wife a Vaio Z i5. I'm blown away by the quality, keyboard, screen and track pad. I was anti-Sony for so long because of their proprietary hardware. But have a new appreciation for them after using their laptop. I still can't get the function keys for volume and brightness working without getting some dumb error message. But it's the only it has. The Blu ray player is a nice bonus.

They'll send the first one back, and offer you $25 for the second one. You may not get the second one back due to shipping fees. (or they'll charge you to ship it back)

The dude was trying to sell it to me as well. Didn't seem like a bad deal either. Mine was quoted at the 3-4 range at 170 after the coupon. You got the accidental damage one as well which IMO you don't need. I would have only got the $100 coverage one. Can your return the coverage?

It's a little light IMO. Most new laptops should last over 4 hours with normal use. After a year, with moderate use, battery life could drop 50%. I wonder if the touchscreen sucks the life out of these units.

If your local store is OOS (and they are OOS online), then you're pretty much OOL (out of luck). I don't think Staples stores will transfer products from store-to-store. At least they didn't when I asked about being able to exchange a defective product (that was OOS at my closest store) for the same product from a different (but somewhat local) Staples.

Well, for people it applied to, it was better than the Adorama deal. A LOT better. The OP was right to make the comparison, and you are right that folks that didn't have rewards and/or a laptop might want to order from Adorama. I think you were wrong to change the OP's deal, then compare it.

Oh, and as for Craig's List... Selling a laptop on Craig's List in Houston is a nightmare and a HUGE hassle. With over a hundred a day being listed, prices are rock bottom. And THEN they haggle. And after you meet them, they haggle MORE because after you spent 30-60 minutes in traffic burning gas they figure you're going to drop the price rather than leave empty handed. I truly wish a decent Craig's List competitor would spring up and become popular.

Okay, so we've both pissed on the wall and I think will have to just agree to disagree on this one. As one of the people the deal applied to, I think it was a heck of a lot better than the Adorama one.

I love mine. Got it during microsoftstore.com price mistake/clearance for $900. I personally would never pay $1500 for a Z though. Just way too much.

been playing with this Asus. It's built really well. Love the aluminum. Just wish it was a bit lighter and with more power/battery.

I never changed the OP's deal. Again, I even said, the trade-in is a nice option. And again, trading in something of value (whether it be laptops/tablets/rewards) doesn't equate directly to savings -- you gave up something to get something. If the rewards absolutely weren't going to be used for anything else before they expired, then yes, that would be "savings". If your laptop/tablet was headed to the dumpster -AND- Staples gives you credit for it, then yes, that would be savings. But it sounds like you aren't even guaranteed to get money for your item -- even if it is working.

I highly recommend having them come to you -- particularly in a public place close/convenient to you. I NEVER go to them if it's out of my way. I thought all CL deals worked where the buyer went to the seller.

Yep, quite possibly. I've said all along that it could be -- especially if you get max value for your trade-in (i.e. A LOT more than what it is worth).

You have to do more than just select "your store". There are three green check marks on the listing page. Make sure to click the link next to the bottom of the three:

"Check In Store Availability". It will show you stock at the stores closest to you.

Samurai, I'd ask Buckeyfan.

From the sound of his post that I quoted, they can determine a value for your trade-in that MIGHT be less than $100.

RagingWaffle 03-07-2013 09:54 PM

Buckeyefan 1 03-07-2013 10:00 PM

Read this regarding the recycle program:
http://consumerist.com/2011/12/30...ts-screen/

My advice - take a photo, and video that it is working, with all the accessories. Then record a video of yourself packing it well. If it breaks on the way their, it's not their fault. That could turn into finger pointing. You could also insure it for $100. That way if the third party "accidentally breaks it", you get your $100 regardless.

Holiday - they tried to tell me the old Dell I sent in wasn't working, and offered me $25. I told them I had photos of it working as I packaged it up. Battery wouldn't hold a charge, they said it had to run at least 30 minutes. I argued and got the $$, but had to fight it. Just treat it like a MIR. Cross your t's and dot your i's. You should be fine. But don't send in garbage. There's a reason they're offering $100 for it.

Thanks for the info. I have an old Averatec 3200 with XP and it works fine. Only thing I don't have is the original charger but do have a generic one that works well.

I ask because I bought both the S200e at Staples for $406 - $100 = $306 AND the Adorama X202e for $379.99. Now, which one to keep? If I don't get the full $100 then the X202e is obviously the better deal.

delhidada 03-08-2013 07:45 AM

I am very skeptical of this trade in offer and do not wish to loose a working old laptop and not get $100.

I got the same computer with price matched and $75 at OD. Started it up and worked great. The portable DVD ROM was a pleasant surprise. After installing the MS Office and security programs, things looked great. The touchpad works fine. Compared to Windows tablet with a plastic keyboard, this is a great buy - has the features of a tablet with a full keyboard. The post was made while I was purchasing the laptop and came to post it and it was already there.

Civicsixxx 03-08-2013 08:38 AM

Picked one up for $375 new at the Christina, DE store. I went to Prices Corner first and they only had a display unit (offered 5% off) but did not have the box or anything that came with it. They also told me the Elkton MD store had 2 in stock but I wanted to stay in DE to avoid tax.

Good luck and Thanks OP!

Y’all beware of trading in your laptops. I contacted customer support and got the following clarification. Might save y’all a lot of future grief.

“Your rebate states its good for a notebook, then excludes laptops. What is the difference?”

Dear Customer,
A notebook tend to be thinner and lighter than normal laptops. Please check with your manufacturer if your laptop is classed as a notebook. If you do not have a notebook and have a laptop, it is up to the recyclers discretion whether to give you $100 for your product.

Kind regards,

Interesting. When I called them about this discrepancy I was told there is no difference to them. Laptop and notebook are the same thing.

Update: Second phone call confirmed they are the same and added they are aware of this and will be removing Laptop from the exclusions.

Update 2: Here is the response to an email I sent them asking the difference between laptops and notebooks.
"Thank you for your recent email. In this promotion, we refer to laptops as notebooks."

They actually couldn't find the box for me with the DVD. But i have one on my current laptop and never used it. Everything is streaming now. I use netflix, Sling and other streaming. If i need a disc to install software, i will probably put it on my PC desktop and just share the drive.

They took off another $30 for not having the drive. came out to $299.91

Here's how they broke it down on my receipt.

Never mind, checked now, it's a staples promotion.

How does the Asus s200 compare to the Lenovo S405? The Asus is costing more initially, but the trade in should help. However I would like opinions on the performance of the two.

They're very different computers. Personally, I don't think the S405 at Staples is that great of a deal. The Lenovo is much larger/heavier and has no touchscreen. If you're in the market for a highly portable laptop, you can't beat the Asus right now. If you want something larger, I'd keep looking.

Will this run sc2 on the lowest settings anyone know?

I ask because I bought both the S200e at Staples for $406 - $100 = $306 AND the Adorama X202e for $379.99. Now, which one to keep? If I don't get the full $100 then the X202e is obviously the better deal.

Curious to know the difference between S200e and X202e ?

anyone know how much an ao756 would fetch? if i can get $200, i'd jump.

luv2ctheworld 03-08-2013 09:22 PM

Hard to find. Called a few Staples that listed as Low Stock Clearance Item. Most of them said there was one left and it was a damage/return. A couple said they had display models and luckily one of the two said display model was available for sale and I drove over to get it. Got an extra 10% off but all the stuff was there (total discount $125). So it will be around $224 after the $100 trade in.

Masterguy 03-09-2013 07:33 AM

Anyone have experience with display model?

I got the last one from store in Morgan Hill,CA. They have asked me to comeback so they can wipe off all information, box and give it to me.

Manager only gave 5% discount for display model. Should I ask for 10%? Any thoughts?

My only worry was its a display model......manager said it has same warranty as new lappy, still thinking whether to keep it or return it.

Total including tax came out to be $385. Hoping for $100 rebate for my working netbook. $285 for this one is not bad at all

I'm in the same position. Purchased yesterday and it's ready for pickup today. Of course the tech guy tried to sell me the warranty saying since the unit didn't come with a restore disk, they would charge me $69 just to ever look at it again. I don't need to pay anyone to restore the thing but I will find out myself how to do it. I also picked up the lenovo s405 so I'm deciding between the two.

For me the manager told me that will restore everything to factory setting. you shouldn't pay a dime for recovery. Not that I know of!

Only dilemma is that its a display unit.

I returned one of these and restored to factory settings before returning it. Simple -- just go into Windows 8 control panel and it's one of the options. Unless by putting the display demo stuff on it they wiped out the partition that stores that stuff...

This laptop comes with 1-year accidental damage protection from Asus, so I didn't appreciate them trying to sell me that, either.

Just got this laptop and it seems really cheap...the touchpad is horrible, and frequently interferes with typing. Any one else have feedback on the quality of this laptop?

Thanks OP, I purchased on the 7th first store I tried had it in stock.... I have been looking at this laptop for my wife since it first appeared on this site. Deal is perfect for me as I had an old HP netbook (13 years old) just collecting dust in the closet... I timed the battery today on my trade in 36 min 10 sec until it powered down for low battery otherwise works great hope I get that $100 gift card.

Brobee 03-09-2013 07:45 PM

Austin, TX has a few in different stores, but they are all stating they are damaged and returned items and they cannot sell them. One store has six and they say they are *all* damaged or returned by customers... how can one store have six unless the employees are holding onto them? I called their President Complaint department to see if they would call and they gave me the same story after being on hold while they called the store.

I just got this one today too. Did you update your drivers from this thread here? This seems to help out.

So far i LOVE this laptop. Small, lightweight, good construction, fast, and touchscreen to boot! Can't find a better laptop with this hardware spec and touchscreen new for $400 OTD. This is replacing my tablet indefinitely now that I not only have a bigger touchscreen, but I can do all of my work on this laptop without compromises!

It can be ordered online now with this warning and $75 coupon can not be added.
Order can be placed without the coupon, but you can call tomorrow and have the coupon applied.
This may complicate the Trade-In Rebate though.
Most stores are OOS with only displays and defective units left that can not be sold.
Staples is updating its web site and it should be available normally by 7AM:

Delivery Time Has Changed
Important Note: We were unable to check our inventory at this time and cannot confirm that all your items are available. Product availability and expected delivery dates will be on your order confirmation email.

RAM is soldered to the motherboard, so you can't upgrade it. Stuck with 4 Gigs :(

luv2ctheworld 03-09-2013 11:12 PM

I have been messing around with the laptop for the past hour. At $224 (excl tax), I have absolutely no complaints. Nice design, feels solid, speedy enough for basic stuff, AND a touchscreen. The display model kinda irked me a little bit, but honestly, for the price, WTH, can't beat it.

The only thing that is bugging me is wondering how long the battery life and screen life will be on this display model, given that it is basically on all the time. Time will tell.

I just put through an order with the coupon accepted.... you just be patience... I just left the order in the shopping cart... and come back a few times to try add the coupon... on the third time, the coupon got accepted.... Anyway, hopefully the order will be fulfilled... as this will be considered as an upgrade to the old ASUS netbook which barely used at all...

I have no complaints as well, although I paid $400 OTD (new, no trade in, with tax). Been playing with this laptop for the past few hours and am loving it. Although the windows experience index on this is a bit less than my sandy-bridge i5, I can't really tell the difference. From running office, browsing the web, using gimp, playing movies, and compiling/running apps, it is such a breeze. It's actually fun drawing stuff on gimp using the touchscreen, and when browsing the web I actually prefer the touchscreen than my external mouse-- I guess my android is spoiling my web browsing habits!

BTW, I do agree with the other posters here and on other threads for this laptop that say it is "preferred" to have a touchscreen when using windows 8. I think I'm currently 60% keyboard/mouse, 40% touchscreen thus far when using this laptop, and most things with windows 8 is intuitive. Therefore I can't see myself buying another windows 8 laptop without a touchscreen.

As for the battery being tough to replace and RAM "soldered" in, I don't really care at this point. The ram is definitely sufficient for my purposes and hopefully by the time the battery becomes near "dead", I will have a new laptop with this one posted on eBay!

A laptop with dead battery. How much you get?

HunterOne 03-10-2013 07:32 AM

The battery can be changed. You just have to use an old credit card to open the bottom cover after you unscrew it.
The batttery is:
ASUS Li-Polymer battery pack C21-X202, 7.4v, 5136 mAh, 38wh, with Korean cells.
Just google: C21-X202.
In a couple of years there will probably be generic ones available on ebay.

Good info but I think he is asking how much he would get for trading in his laptop with a dead battery.

Toshiba 2006 laptop with with a desktop pentium and about 10 minutes of battery life I was able to get $150 a little over 2 years ago.

If you keep your laptops in good condition, you can pretty much get $100 minimum for any laptop on CL or eBay-- assuming it's not super old. Hence I'm not big on the Staples $100 trade in-- rather sell the laptop myself since I know I can do more and won't have to worry about Staples' conditions.

I've never said trading it in. I meant was after a few years (hopefully), when the battery is almost dead (I had one that had 10 minutes left-- essentially could boot up Windows XP and then open a browser with about 5 minutes of surfing before it shut off), I was able to sell it on eBay (but I did state low battery life in the ad-- the laptop was in excellent condition). I don't know all of Staples conditions for trade in but I don't do it since I know I can do better than $100 for any laptop <= 5 years old (assuming good condition).

Wanted to thank poster for this deal. Went to my local staples today and their display was the last one in stock. Was able to get it with the coupon and another 10% off on top if it. Total $449.90-$75 off coupon-10%= $329.91....
Not bad for a touchscreen laptop with decent specs

Oh good catch..I asked the rep if it did come with the external drive but I forgot to verify when I paid and signed papers to have them clean the unit out of all their software installed on it. I pick it up tomorrow morning. Will have to ask or else it will stay there and I'm getting my money back. How do you like hours so far BTW,

Those of you who are new to this ASUS notebook:

There is a wealth of information here in Slickdeals on this notebook and its sibling the X202e.

Just do a thread title search for S200e and X202e in the Hot deals forum AND the Deal talk forum.

For instance you'll learn that both use the same BIOS, that the latest Bios is the 207, that you have to hit F2 to get to the Bios ONLY AFTER a warm boot or RESTART. Hitting F2 on a cold boot, by pressing the power button will get you nowhere near the Bios but back into Win8.
And that the 207 Bios is ONLY listed in the ASUS site under the X202e NOT under the S200e which lists only the 205 Bios.
Also a tip on the battery used in this notebook is posted above in post #184.

There is a lot more to learn by reading all the threads if you want to get the MAX out of the S200e OR the X202e for that matter, and it'll save you a lot of time and aggravation by gaining the knowledge others have found out the hard way BUT shared it here for all to benefit.

PS. BIOS is now up to 208

Yes I have read them all trying to decide if the X202e is worth the $70 more I paid than the S200e one I got from Staples. Mostly about the WiFi differences. I don't really care about dual band, I care about range and reliability.

Here is also a site that has a lot of info on both.

I've only messed around a little bit with it but it is pretty cool. Issues were that the screen shakes when you use the touchscreen, and it is a bit too small screen-wise for my tastes, so I think I am gonna return it or sell it and get a Yoga. I really like the Yoga, and it is cool how you can hold it like a tablet.

Very interesting.

Look at your box/laptop bottom clearly. It seems the box says S200E as Model. But below the serial number, it shows MB VER X202E

Also confirmed at the back of the laptop and also confirmed on "Hardware" in Control Panel.

Seems at least my laptop is the X202E but boxed in the S200E.
