Read the feedback before buying

This deal comes up periodically on Newegg and somebody usually gets burned. Read the Newegg feedback before you jump on this deal. There is a reason it is FAR.

I have two of these drives on the shelf. They have a non-standard, Apple proprietary interface. It is not CompactFlash, not 44-pin IDE, and not any of the standard ZIF connectors for MicroDrives. The MicroDrive ZIF adapters sold on fleabay do not mate with these drives.

As one of the reviewers notes:

"This technology is totally obsolete. This is the type of hard drive that was in the iPod mini (not the nano) from 2004-05."

If you have an ipod mini that needs a new drive, it's a great deal. If not, you will not be able to get it to work in anything else.

How are you getting burned by a FAR item?

This actually isn't what the iPod Mini used. The iPod Mini used the standard compact flash interface, and you could replace their microdrives with solid state compact flash cards that were ATA compliant. I did it myself.

I used it as a filler.

I ordered this + Syba Adapter + iWork Tool Kit + Refurb. Linksys Switch = $41.97

Apply V. Me = Additional $4.20 Discount

Grand Total: $1.20 MM (less postage costs)

You could also add that POS Intel Celeron Processor to stack the order or any of those CTA PS3 Move Accessories if you haven't already ordered them.

I ordered the Scosche Charger separately because V. Me can't be combined with other promo codes, like $7 off.

haven't you used the promo code already? or separate addresses?

I tried another account and it did apply, but after billing info it was gone

got all the CTA stuff except for the induction charger + defense antivirus thingys with the code :)

not a huge MM, but a couple dollars at least

now I'm just waiting for another prepaid card to drop down in my mailbox so I can activate the software and fill out the rebate

Nope. I haven't used the promo yet. I was waiting until a large collection of FAR items showed up.

Unfortunately, I placed my order for the CTA items on Feb 28th, the day before the V. Me promo started, otherwise I would have used it on that.

They were all FAR back then, including the triple port charger and vertical induction charger. The next day, the vertical induction one went up to $49.99 - $19.99 MIR and the triple port went to $3 AR. Eventually, the vertical induction charger went back down in price to FAR, then went OOS. The other one is still $3 AR.

I thought it was kind of stupid using my V. Me on such a small order, but I figured I better use it before the cancel the promo.

People were already saying Newegg customer service was telling them all the funding was exhausted. All of the banner ads disappeared, and now they are back again.

xxxHolic 03-07-2013 02:33 AM

Only 5GB. Just get a 16GB flash drive for $8.

ksdorara 03-07-2013 02:46 AM

I can't use V.me to check out, what's the problem??

smartdeals 03-07-2013 02:52 AM

in for collection? could be sold for $100 after 10 years?

MyBallsItch 03-07-2013 03:03 AM

I still have a diamond rio mp3 player that uses these. They have a compact flash interface but aren't totally CF compatible. It's like the tiniest little gotcha like a disk spin up or ready signal most cf devices don't use or know what to do with.

You can put a CF card in these types of players, but you can't put these drives in most other standard CF devices.

Its a matter of appearance & available ports. And I always seem to bump the drive all the time and its eventually going to get me in trouble.

I believe that you wouldn't be able to give these away in ten years. Here, I have some floppy disks. Want to buy them for $100? This is obsolete tech that belongs in a landfill. Junk is still junk even if it's free people.

I totally agree with the first review:

Pros: I bought the thing just to destroy it and torture it, never even intended to turn it on.
It was $3 when I bought it, so heck yes it was worth buying for this purpose

I must confess that I thought this is CF compatible but it isn't.

Worth about $5 on eBay.

i remember when people where buying $200 creative Muvo 2 and when it came they would RIP THEM OPEN to pull out the 4gb Hitachi Microdrive that cost $400 (this was at a time when the LARGEST CF was 1gb i never had one the largest CF i had was 512mb that cost $50) people where sticking them into a select few cameras that would use a CF/MD (Microdrives where thicker then CF)

in those days they referred to the $200 MD as "Precious Bounty" and you could still use the Muvo with a CF

I remember the "precious bounty" reference, although this one has ATA connectors. I bought it without researching much, thinking I'd use it on a CF DSLR. Oh well!

cpusrvc 03-08-2013 12:26 PM

Hmmm .... I've got one of the last PATA laptops made at a great price back then, and it now sits needing a new drive, which are virtually impossible to find at a reasonable price. I'm pondering trying this, putting on XP, and use it for browsing only. With so much of my stuff now in the "cloud", maybe this would work.

Thoughts from anyone?

Not worth the hassle these days when compact flash is just as cheap, can survive a drop and is much faster. These things are really a relic from a decade ago.

dont bother. youll need to find an adapter and a ribbon cable for this thing. and it would be pretty slow, too.
i have seen msata -> ide 2.5" drive sized adapters. $75 (for the adapter and the msata) might extend the use of that laptop for a little longer. search ebay for 'ide msata 2.5'

I have an iPod mini that I modded and it had one of these drives in it, still works ok actually but I think there's a short somewhere since it resets if I squeeze it too tight. Still, 16 gb mini. So very useless in the age of smartphones.

hightop32 is right, mSATA + PATA adapter is the way to go. This T43 I'm typing on has an mSATA drive in it's future when prices drop just a little more. :)

I'd recommend this site to you http://www.microsatacables.com

They've been around for a while and I trust their stuff.
