eBay has the 13.3 inch MacBook Air for $899. This is apple's eBay where they sell refurbished apple products. It had a 1 year apple warranty. This is $1199 new and normally $999 through apples refurb. This is a steal IMO.

There's sales tax for me, which brings it up to $953. I would rather buy it from Amazon the next time they offer it for $999.

You should read the linked material thoroughly, especially the comments.

Jordan Kahn's supposition of November 19, 2012; is just that, a guess.
Nothing to back up his conclusion; "No one would go on the record at eBay, however.".
His last sentence is "We’ve reached out to Apple for verification.".
That was four months ago, no follow-up.

btw, if it was actually Apple Inc., they would be required to collect Sales Tax for every state in which they have a physical presence or registered corporate agent.

My guess is they've contracted a third-party broker to unload old inventories.

why bother with that when they already have a thriving business selling refurbs on their own site?

because they arent "thriving" much as before. Their sales hasnt been great so they lower the retina prices because some people are figuring out its a big ripoff

Tax kills it, over 1000 for 2011 version. Rather pay another 97 and get new 2012 version.
