Thanks for posting but I'll pass on this one, if this thermostat dies you have to buy another one that will fit in its wall space or else you'll be patching drywall/plaster and trying to match paint to get a surface mount one.

Buy extra(s) for back up then. It's still much cheaper than just one nice thermostat.

colcol 03-07-2013 08:28 PM

can you tell us what state this was in?

neehon 03-07-2013 08:36 PM

I bought this exact thermostat sold under "RiteTemp" or smth like that brand at least five years ago (it may have had less features back then), excellent thermostat, no problems whatsoever, recommend highly. Want to buy more!!! Especially at this price.

That's exactly what my wife suggested. So if I have one FAR from utility company and a second one at $9.73 for a backup then I should be all set. Plus it does come with a 5 year warranty.

anyone able to replicate this deal anywhere else?

dogi 03-08-2013 05:06 AM

This was on clearance for several weeks now. Some stores don't have it anymore.

It's $9.99 here in WI as well.

I got this a few years ago when under Rite Temp brand name and the touchscreen got damaged (wasn't able to press some buttons). Apparently that was caused by from static electricity. rubbing the touchscreen with alcohol helped for sometime, but the problem returned and had to get a new replacement unit from 3M. I have been way too careful since then (touch any grounded metal object before touching the screen), and haven't had any issues with the 3M unit. Last week, I grabbed another one for 9.99 as a backup unit.

ebnub 03-08-2013 05:24 AM

I wonder if this thing is less accurate at reading the room temp being that it's stuck in the wall.

No thanks anyway, seen the last 10 or so sitting on the shelf at HD for a couple months now. I'm sure I'd be kicking myself in a few years when I would have to patch the hole in the wall because I want an update or it stops working.

biomekanik 03-08-2013 07:44 AM

I noticed this last week in Norwood, MA for $14 and change.

ebnub: When I looked at it, I believed the temp sensor is in front protected by a little cage.

When you cut the opening for this thermostat cut at 45 degree angle with the blade going toward the center of the opening. You'll end up with a piece of drywall, sort of like a plug, that can be put back in later pretty easily.

Buy 2... its still cheaper.

That goes for any thermostat

I just got one of these and installed it about 2 weeks ago. This is a nice unit. I was worried about having a big hole in the wall if i had to replace it, but really....how often do thermostats fail? Its worth the upgrade if you have an old ugly thermostat that is not backlit and fully programable.

sdmaster07 03-08-2013 04:15 PM

I've had one for a few months. Picked up another one today for $9.73 for a spare. Thanks.

Couldn't find any at my local hd. Shame needed one. They did have a pair of stainless steel garbage cans for $14 on sale though. Plenty of boxes for those.. .

Make sure you ask someone in orange with one of the smart scanner to do a product look up for item 452-494. Sometimes the inventory is up in the rafters.

TR99 03-08-2013 05:17 PM

Darn - doesn't appear to be sold in the Central Phoenix locations per the inventory checker: http://sd.site88.net/homedepot.html

Great find and good luck to the rest.

I'm less worried about failure but simply the possibility I might upgrade, to say a wifi-enabled unit in the future. Imagine trying to replace this beast w/ a slim, trim Nest!

Still a good deal though.

not necessarily, Honeywell (an awesome brand for thermostats) is on FP right now for 11 bucks at kmart... I have a shitty thermostat that's touch screen... it's total garbage. The cool-look aside, there is no backlight and the user interface is garbage. Point being, go with a good brand.

engineer3d 03-09-2013 02:20 PM

Purchased 1 myself 2 years ago on clearance then when it was RiteTemp. Still working fine.
You can adjust the Temp accuracy to at least .25 degrees I do believe.

Anyway I read up on the static electricity damage ahead of time, as well as using a Nickel Metal Hydride or Lithium Rechargeable Battery for Power if you do not supply it with power thru the HVAC System. If you do then use the Alkaline Battery.

So Purchased 3 for the WTF moment. Could use one in the Garage if I ever install a Furnace and Insulate it for working on the car in winter, and have two for backup.

For the price why not..

Also $9.73 In Illinois Stores in the Chicago area and also In the Northwest Indiana region to include parts of Southwest Michigan.

I too, bought the 3m36 a couple years back when it was a different brand. Got it from Home Depot for around $10. Has worked flawless.

sku: 452494 3m36 is a flush mount
sku: 338194 3m30 is not flush mount, same programming and also has a 1 button for home and away.

I decided to pick up the 3m30 for $17.03
There were still a bunch of each left on the shelf when I left Sunday afternoon.

Repped, was able to use the link to find the 3M-30 model in my area, the other one was completely sold out. There were about 7 left at the store and others had them in stock as well.

For those of you looking, simply search for sku: 338194
