Sold separately. $49.99 for 1 year, $99.99 for lifetime: link []. Alternately, for $69.99 (Plus $7 shipping. Plus tax. Not sure if they charge tax to everyone, but they do to TN), Magellin sells a refurb unit with lifetime Traffic and Maps here [].

Initially I was drawn to this thread because I thought it would be good for the 500 bonus points (which it would), but now the refurb is tempting me (not so much, now that I know I'd have to pay shipping and tax).

I'm giving this a shot. I previously had a Magellan and really like it except for 2 problems.

1. At night the display wouldn't dim as much as I wanted. The Garmin was the only GPS that really did a good job dimming it's backlight.

2. When you zoomed out secondary roads would quickly disappear. In the city that was OK but in the country you could have a screen that shows no roads what so ever because you were too far out for secondary roads but there were no highways or freeways around. That was lousy if you were trying to use the map as an alternative to a paper map and plan a route manually rather than letting the machine do the work.

Hopefully the system doesn't have either of these issues. If it does it will be returned.
