official, no, unofficial, yes.

3 months is their standard policy.

I wonder why.

SMAX 03-17-2013 09:50 PM

Roku doesn't work with Amazon Prime, I think.

Even my old Roku 1 does Amazon Prime.

Train Wreck 03-17-2013 09:58 PM

So this pretty much replaces cable now?

SMAX 03-17-2013 09:58 PM

shit, that's right. I meant to say my crappy WD Live doesn't have Amazon Prime. I only found this out after I gave my Roku away. thanks!

forzaINTER 03-18-2013 05:23 PM

Good price, but I snagged a Roku 3 with no regrets.
I no longer have a shoddy signal upstairs. Headphone feature is cool.
Nifty little thang.
Pretty good reviews like this one

Awesome price! I have a Gen1 Netgear branded one. I've used it as an alternative to cable TV for about a year now. Only miss some sports really. Programmed great by the way into a Harmony 650 without needed to adjust afterwards. It's worth it to check it out. The newer model is noting power equal to a night-light, but not sure if the others do the same thing. Maybe consider getting the newer model if you think they won't continue to update the Roku2 after awhile just like the Gen1 that I currently have.
This article http://thecreativealternative.com...-to-cable/ explains how to use the Roku, older models like the Roku 2 at Costco the OP listed, and the newer model along with channel suggestions to weed out the 700 or so bloat-channels.

NO!

Hard to believe anyone is not familiar with Roku by now. The R2XS is my favorite Roku because it has a usb port which allows one to play media files off an attached usb disk. That said, local file playback is not a strength of the Roku. If you are looking for a set top box that does a nice job with local file playback and streams internet content, I like the SMP [wordpress.com] better and you can get one for $30 [ebay.com] on eBay if you are patient. I have three SMPs, but am buying Rokus these days.

The Roku is an OK streamer. A lot of people expect these streaming boxes to replace their cable or satellite service. They don't. These boxes package internet content for display on your television at ten feet with a remote control. Some of them directly (R3, R2XS) or indirectly (Playon, plex, etc.) play local media. That's not TV. Local news, sports, live events are lacking. Its strength is in its extensibility -- people can make channels for it. There are hundreds of channels. Some are amazing [wordpress.com], some are not.

I have five Rokus and this is a good price. If you like Netflix, Vudu, Prime, or Crackle, the Roku provides a nice interface for a tv. If you are a cable cutter, you can watch CNN, Fox, CNBC, and MSNBC clips. If you are willing to run a separate server in your home, then you can get more content via Playon [wordpress.com] or Plex [wordpress.com]. Going forward, I expect Aereo [wordpress.com], Skitter, and others will bring real, live television programming to the Roku.

I should also mention that there in now a Roku 3 [wordpress.com] which is replacing the XS as the premium Roku. It has a more powerful cpu and a headphone jack on the remote control, but some content -- especially games -- will not run on the Roku 3.

Go ahead and buy one. You may be surprised what you get for $70. Just don't expect this to replace cable, satellite, or broadcast television -- it's an internet streamer.

Roku 3 is out, so almost worth just waiting this out perhaps since they will come down more most likely? Hmm. I returned mine for a WDTV due to difficulties with network streaming without a 3rd party app.

darkpope 03-18-2013 10:15 PM

for this price, roku 3 is the only way to go.

jordanz12 03-18-2013 10:43 PM

Great deal! So what exactly is the difference with the roku 3? Besides the headphone jack (which I don't know why you'd ever want that)?

wizwor 03-18-2013 11:58 PM

faster cpu, but I have no issues with the 2XS performance, and some games do not work, plus wifi remote (vs bt or IR in earlier versions).

True that. I got the YouTube channel when I bought my first Roku XDS. Very cool that I get to keep it even when upgrading to new units. Having said that, I find the VideoBuzz channel to be just as good as YouTube. I installed it for my folks and was pretty impressed. I don't think the lack of YouTube is an issue, but I know I'm greatly outnumbered.

Anyway, I currently have four Rokus ranging from XDS to the Roku 2 XS. I really liked all of them. But if I was in the market, I would definitely spend the extra 20 bucks and get the Roku 3. Sounds like much faster processor and significantly better wifi. Both are well worth 20 bucks.
Just keep in mind, HDMI only on the Roku 3. No longer able to connect to the old school TV's. I still have one old TV, so I'll hold onto at least one of the older Rokus till that TV dies. Die, TV, Die! Why won't that old bastard just die. Bought it in college, about 20 years ago.

blk00civicsi 03-19-2013 08:00 AM

I don't get why people think that no YouTube is the dealbreaker. What would you even watch on there? 90% of the trash on YT is exactly that... Trash. For music videos, use VEVO. The only other thing that YT is even worth using it for is Movie trailers. Which I'm sure there's something out on roku for that specifc thing.

I have one of the netgear boxes and absolutely hate the remote. One of the problems is I have to aim it directly at the IR window. Does the harmony improve that?

No kidding. Roku doesn't have a Bangladesh channel TD!!! DealBreaker!!!

I cancelled directv when I got my Roku2, theres only a couple shows I watch (Dexter, Game Of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy) and I can uhhh watch those anyways, have netflix and hulu so I saved about $80 flushing DirecTV. If you sit around watching TV all day this isn't for you.

also want to point out that you need pretty good internet speed in order to cut the cable. or get good signal from antenna. I get neither. I get one station with an antenna on top of 30 foot pole. and I get 2.5MB/s top download speed. The drawbacks to living out in the boondocks, I guess. I'd love to cut my satellite off. We really don't watch it much. But with a family of 5, only being able to stream one show at a time (mediocre stream quality to boot) just doesn't quite cut it.

Same here (no more DirecTV). The wife and I watch quite a bit of television though, but between Netflix, Hulu, and Plex I haven't been happier. Even use Pandora when cleaning around the house.
