gatorbob 03-19-2013 05:33 AM

I managed to pick one of these up at my local BB after ordering online. When I went to pick up the box was open but looked brand new. They took an additional 10% off since it was "open box" so i walked out for $990 + tax.

The trackpad seems to have an issue as when you click the very bottom left or right corners the clicks do not register. Tap to click works fine.

I assume I should have a full 1 year warranty so debating about taking up to apple store.

Any advice as I'd really like to keep it? Thanks.

markyg 03-19-2013 07:33 AM

I read what you posted wrong I thought you were referencing the Retina thats on sale on Amazon. I doubt I'll be able to find this deal in stores but BOL I hope you get it

Yep, all four stores near me are out. Thanks tho OP.

mo.karney 03-19-2013 08:26 AM

none in about 10 stores by me...

blackblaze 03-19-2013 08:30 AM

Did a check against stores in MD/DC/VA and all are sold out, like others are seeing as well. :(

nojmplease 03-19-2013 08:33 AM

Damn, that is one slick deal. Pop in 8GB, get an SSD and sell the 750GB drive and you have a beast of a machine.

markyg 03-19-2013 08:33 AM

I'm calling it dead unless someone says otherwise I checked basically all of FL and South Burbs of Chicago

NYzGHeTToBoY 03-19-2013 08:39 AM

Thanks. I started searching and quit. Found it in a few stores only to be denied once I got to Checkout.

drozek 03-19-2013 08:44 AM

none in chicago land area or they would have been sold to me already

jinxeddeep 03-19-2013 08:51 AM

twice now i've ordered these "clearance" items on BB's website and found out later at the store (different store on each occasion) that they were open box items that were being clearanced out...the employees at both the stores told me that clearance doesn't necessarily mean new...they said that often open box items, like the macbook mentioned here, that are over one model year old will be listed as clearance items that can be ordered online...if you're able to order these, don't be surprised to find out that its an open box item..in my case both the items came without any of the accessories...:(

scarletfire77 03-19-2013 08:53 AM

Here is a link to the 17" version

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Apple...trClr=true

Best Buy has had some good laptop deals. I got a Asus i7 (2nd gen) for $399 the other day, it has an aluminum case and backlit keyboard. Its only 14" so I dont mind the 1366x788

mrak 03-19-2013 09:04 AM

would this machine perform better than the CURRENT gen 13" base model?

I had the same experience two times in a row. Bought a camcorder and a blu ray player, only to get an email saying it was ready for pick up and get there to see it was an open box or display item :facepalm2:

Now, these clearance deals that pop up, I only search them if Im interested in getting an open box item at minimum, and that 1% chance of getting something new.

sd_sd_sd 03-19-2013 09:11 AM

I use this machine. It can take 8GB RAM (16 GB unofficially). Pop in a solid state, parallels and it is an ultimate developer's machine.

Get a caddy from Amazon, get rid of the optical drive (not a blu-ray:-)) and put in a second hard drive and they you go, tons of storage for your pics and garbage as the SSD primary will not have much.

theycallmemrdo 03-19-2013 10:08 AM

Im Interested in getting a mac but does open book mean the warranty is started/over.
And if it says oos stock is it a good chance that its oos to. I want to call:'( bestbuy because that would save me the time. Would calling work? And I can jst ask fir all the clearance and thry tell me

gardennpme 03-19-2013 11:12 AM

I attached a photo of my receipt from the purchase. I bought mine on Sunday where I lucked into finding it while searching for the Airs that were on clearance. I got the last one in the Natomas, CA store. I called all over the Bay Area and that was the only store that had one.

yinkwan25 03-19-2013 09:54 PM

Thank you OP. This is my first ever mac. I love it already. Although i had go stay in the apple store for 3 hours while they repaired it. But other than that thank you. I dont know how to post my receipt but i got it for 1100, only MBP. Had to spend $80 for a charger. But the manager gave me 15% off the MBP. WIN!!

Exactly what I have done to my first gen unibody MBP. Popped in 8 gigs memory from newegg, replaced standard 320gb with a 750gb and replaced optical drive with a 120 gb SSD. I have it to virtual machine win 7 in parallels or dual boot through boot camp. I have had it for over 4 years now and still love it. Runs like the day I bought it. I put it through its paces too editing video and photoshop cs5. Not so much as a hiccup even out of the old core 2 duo.

I refuse to upgrade until they make the retina screen with dual esata bays. I will never give up my dual drive set up for the storage, speed, and reliability.

beldar3648 03-20-2013 10:40 AM

So I'm having a brain fart at the moment. How do you change the location to see if they have any in your area?

NVM, found out how to change location.

The only MBP I see available are going for $1500 open-box. This is for a 15.4" with 500gb core i7.

theycallmemrdo 03-20-2013 03:14 PM

So is there any chance that i would be able to get a different mac pro ajusted to these prices.
and does the super cheap prices show on the boxes or do you got to scan it first.

Then they lied to you and you should take it up with Best Buy corparate.
The following quote is straight from the Best Buy open box and clearence website:

Items are available in stores only. Open-box items are products that have been removed from their packaging as they may be display units or returned items. Clearance items are products that are brand new, never opened, factory-sealed products that are available at a reduced price.

is the 13" version MD314LL/A $900 a good deal compared to this?

JJS1309 03-21-2013 06:50 AM

Checked local best buy, they and whole Kansas City area don't have any stock. Would have been a nice processor bump from my late 2008 MBP.

raven69david 03-21-2013 07:40 AM

is all the bestbuy mac sales just for the older models?
will they do it for unopened ones.
will the opened ones also have out dated prices to and need to be scaned
and whats the chance of me getting a different model at these prices

Hawkal 03-22-2013 11:24 AM

OP, you inspired me to search the other BB in my area. Open box, but picked up the 15.4" retina, 512 gb ssd, 2.6 ghz for $1750 after 9.5% tax.

Thanks!!

pontiacg6gtp 03-22-2013 03:22 PM

sorry its been years since i have been to bestbuy

linexpert 03-22-2013 06:49 PM

I was able to find one at my local BB. It was an open item but the sales guy wouldn't add a discount. He said he'd buy it if i didn't. I ended up buying the open item for 1100 +tax and it seems to work well.

I'm wondering what are the pros and cons of this over the new 13" macbook air which is on sale for 1000 tomorrow. Is this worth the 1100 or am I better off getting a more recent mac with lower specs?

pontiacg6gtp 03-22-2013 09:23 PM

The 17" are 1499.99

The 15" are 1099.99

The 13.3 Air's are 799.99

I am pretty sure its what ever quantity is on hand is what they have. So if your store doesnt have it, its not gonna get it.

If that happens it usually means from my understanding that there is only 1 in stock showing in the computer, so to be safe they dont allow you to buy it online. If its still showing in the morning, call up the store and reserve it with your card. Thats what I had to do.

1234cheapness 03-23-2013 12:51 AM

Huh? Wouldnt it be the retailer that takes the loss on clearance/open box, not Apple.

I heard that Apple had a name to maintain so they don't like when retailers give a big discount on their products.

Found some of them in Arizona.

If it shows up to buy, but once you put it in the cart is says error, that means you have to call the store and reserve it. Or go in and listen to the Slickdeal rules. lol That means they only have 1 on hand and wont sell it till they verify they have it.

if anyone got one and wants to return/sell, i'd purchase a 15inch or 13inch pro/air. let me know.
