Autofocus is totally unnecessary for a fisheye lens. Just set it at 3' and forget about it! Great lens.

More review: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/8mm-f35.htm#top

Only $30 less than price at Amazon or B&H or Adorama. Not $49 less as posted on front page.

why thumbs down?

cant beat the price. awesome lens. If you have FF camera, I would recommend the 14mm ver.

Some people don't like 1saleaday. Slow shipping and all that.

anonimis06 04-29-2013 10:02 PM

A few things to keep in mind, this is a MANUAL focus lens (so no autofocus), the hood is built in (so you can't remove it), and the front element is round so you can't use filters. I read that people actually used the Canon version on EF full frame bodies like the 5D and cut the hood off. I almost bought this lens but decided to go with the Sigma 10-20mm instead This allowed me to use ND filters for long exposure landscapes which I use quite often. That being said, good price for this new lens.

It's an 8mm fisheye. Pretty much panfocus, not much need for autofocus.

How much did you pay for the sigma?

Seylerc 04-29-2013 11:14 PM

Thanks OP, in for 1. I have been watching this lens for a while and this is the best price I have seen. I see this as a very versatile lens given you can use it with FF and crop and get slightly different uses out of each. The manual aperture is a plus, and manual focus really doesn't impact the usefulness of a lens this wide.

i just bought the HD8M for my Canon, and here are some pic i took with it... i wonder if the FE8M would be any worse than HD8M, i honestly dont like the fact that the focus ring is there but it doesnt do anything... might as well dont put it there so i can get a grip on it and mount the lens on my camera easier... anyone know if the FE8M would be the same resolution? , should i return mine ( only bought for 1 week) and get this for $80 less

eBay actually. I don't like buying used lenses online but this was my first and I guess I was careful/lucky. I should really stop buying lenses though

denyeu1nguoi 04-30-2013 01:36 AM

super slow shipping. I bought a product and I waited for like over 3 weeks... my item is not even shipped. I called them up and it takes 2 days to cancel the order, another week to get my money back. Poor company.

darkflow 04-30-2013 02:01 AM

Charge immediately, never ship the item. After a few months I emailed them about the order, no reply. Finally called and got refund in check after half year. This type of company should never exist.

big mike 04-30-2013 04:51 AM

FYI, this is the non-HD coated non-focus confirm chip "original" version. Lens flare can be an issue. The chip thing isn't major if you have a higher end camera.

wrapcity 04-30-2013 07:43 AM

Good deal.. I bought this lens from Amazon back during the holiday season. I had trouble focusing with the lens for a while.. But after reading and trying different things. I recommend always shooting at f stop F8 and then adjust distance as needed.

iamandrewz 04-30-2013 08:02 AM

this is one of the funnest lenses ever. Just throw it on and shoot. Can't miss. I thought I would "maybe" use the lens, then I found myself using it daily. So much fun.

supfresh 04-30-2013 08:04 AM

bought this at $200 on craigslist, but still this is a good deal. if you stop it down to f5.6, colors rival that of a L-series lens.. incredibly sharp!

did you have this exact version FE8M , do you own a L lens. I'm just trying to compare to see if i should save $80 and get this instead of HD8M

How come the Olympus M4/3 mount is heavier than the other mounts? I'm interested, but shouldn't it be smaller/lighter, if anything?

Hydraridaz 04-30-2013 08:16 AM

and how is this company with return policy?

I have a 5D Mark II body. Will the lens hood be visible when the lens is mounted on a full frame body?

Yes. For this reason most people end up cutting the metal hood for use on FF. A quick Google search will yield a lot of info on trimming the hood. You will end up with a circular fisheye on FF that you can crop in post processing.

I hope it's good, because my order summary shows the description for a CANON version, when the model # is for another version - the version I added to the cart & ordered.
I hope I get what I ordered, and not the Canon version!

Did anyone else have this problem?

I already sent them an email about it.

I paid with PayPal, I hope that gives me some protection from them if there's a problem!

also, trimming the hood helps avoid diseases.

yes, a lot. you will need to crop in lightroom. i use a 5d mk ii, full frame, it's SUPER wide. you can even see behind you. but worth the $220.

yes I have this exact lens. never tried the hd8m version, but honestly this lens is a killer. ratings and sample pictures look superb for the hd8m. really comes down to if you want to dish out the extra cash. i use this lens as a hobby, shooting breakdancers, so honestly I had no need to dishout the extra money. I do wedidngs on the side and ocassionally use it at receptions for "fun shots".

i do own the 24-70mm f2.8, and of course you get what you pay for, but when you crank up the vibrance on the rokinon and stop it down, it's very competitive.

also remember, this is a 8mm lens. which means you only need 1/20 or so to produce sharp images, which means you can stop it down to 5.6 at least, even in doors and produce great images!

leovip 04-30-2013 10:22 AM

agh... wanted to wait for the tokina 11-16mm, but that thing never goes on sale. Guess I'll have to settle for this round lens at half the price. Wish I had gotten the cine version for $40 more, but seems like I missed out on that. Guess I can always have fun with this and if I need more then I can sell it on CL and buy the tokina

Brighton 04-30-2013 10:34 AM

$250 from Amazon [amazon.com] when selecting Nikon (not Nikon AE with chip or others) or the Bower version [amazon.com] for Nikon and others for $250.

B&H [bhphotovideo.com] and Adorama [adorama.com] have the Bower relabeled version for $250.

What about this "used" from the Amazon Warehouse for $230? I like the idea of trying it for 30 days and dealing with them in case of a return (for an extra $11). Granted it's "used" but I'm not all that excited about working with 1sale/day. Your thoughts?

I bought one from the Warehouse before and it seemed to be brand new and that was labeled "very good" for condition.

I bought this lens last year ($230 from BuyDig) for my Canon 50D and I love it.. lots of fun.

lolthisismyname 04-30-2013 11:29 AM

I can attest, this is a pretty great lens for the price. I got one the last time it was on here for a little under $200 IIRC. I've had a blast using it. Makes me wish I had a full frame camera though.

I've ordered from them before and received my item in about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks. I feel like they just mess up on orders more often than others, but a majority still have normal experiences with them.

bricker85 04-30-2013 01:04 PM

Why are people commenting on the inability to add a filter to this lens. You guys have seen fisheye lenses before, right? I can't think of a single one that takes filters.

Fisheye lenses aren't the same as ultra wide angle lenses...

Cancel? Ha! Email them, wait a few days, they lie and say it'll ship in a few days, wait another week, email again, few more days and they say it'll ship in a few days. Repeat until you have to stop payment on the credit card. My guess is that they can't afford what they're selling until they get your money. Hate to be at the end of that ponzi scheme.

signalsoldier 04-30-2013 02:56 PM

The warehouse deal posted looks like the better idea as it comes via Prime if you are a member. Heard too many bad things about this company over the years. I am not trying to wait a couple months after they take my loot.

big mike 04-30-2013 04:07 PM

Pretty sure the 1sale, Tanga etc's of the world run something bordering on a virtual company. They either sell the goods on behalf of the mfg and then on "clearance day" the mfg ships EVERYTHING at once whenever they get around to it, or they operate a warehouse that is only manned a couple days a week to unload truckloads of product and then pack and ship back out truckloads of product a week or two later. They're slow, but that's just the way it works, if they shipped your crap tomorrow you'd have to pay extra to fund their warehouse being staffed 5 days a week or whatever it is they aren't doing that causes the delay.

breity 04-30-2013 04:35 PM

Well, this is a tempting deal. I already have a Tamron 10-24mm super wide angle. But a fisheye might be a lot of fun to play with! Don't know if I can justify spending the money right now though. Ha!

If you just have the kit lens I'd highly recommend the 40mm 2.8 or nifty fifty before this one. This would be fun to play with but a decent fast prime will be a huge improvement over the kit lens. Actually if this is in your budget I'd take the Sigma 30mm 1.4 over either of the Canon's :)

How about you learn to read a little more before you make a useless, condescending comment like that? I said it's round and so you can't use filters. Fisheye lenses like the Canon 15mm and 8-15mm have rear gel/filter holders built in. This does not. You're stuck hand-holding an ND filter...

Some, like the Canons take rear gel filters (in front of the mount).

before a manual focus fisheye, i strongly suggest a tele photo to better round out your bag with just one more lens and use that crop factor to your advantage. a 55-200mm tele zoom would add: soft portraits, >300mm focal equiv. good for landscape, birding and wildlife, moon shots, sports and events-- you name it. a fisheye would not give you all this. It is fun but gimmicky and a bit of a novelty, really. of course, great shots could be had with any lens.

after, i would go with a fast prime in the "middle" range 35 or 50 and follow that with a speedlight before even considering a fisheye. even a rectilinear like samyangs 14mm would be more practical and usable than a fish.

you can rent these for a day or two or use the barrel distortion in photoshop to hold you over.

The important question no one has asked, what kind of photography do you do? The 40 f2.8 pancake is STM which means its got quiet autofocus for video use. Except your camera can't focus during video, so that's kinda pointless. The 40mm f2.8 is a good "normal" focal length lens and is extremely compact. Set your kit to 40mm and see what you think of that field of view, then consider you'll be getting a faster aperture and sharper picture but stuck at that focal length. Unless you really need the pancake "size" though you may be better off buying a faster prime like the 35 f2 which is a full stop faster.

The Rokinon 8mm in this thread is 1. manual focus (not a huge issue as the depth of field is enormous) 2. has a fisheye projection so it has to be used carefully 3. really only useful for extremely creative photography, do a flickr search or google images search and look at the output of this lens in real world use and see if it's the kind of things you'd like to do. Fisheyes are not for everyone.

fizzler 05-01-2013 02:44 PM

I bought this last time there was a slickdeal for same price. It was pretty meh. Used it a couple of times and put it away. There is too much contrast in the photos and the fisheye efffect gets old fast.

nifty fifty is more like an 80mm on a crop frame like the T3i. If you want the equivalent focal length that makes a 50mm so nifty, you need to go with a 32mm lens.

Pretty much everyone knows that you convert angle of view when you have a crop frame camera. This isn't necessarily a negative. Sure, the 50mm was meant to be a "normal" lens on full frame, and the equivalent would be ~30mm.

Reasons why the 50mm should be your second lens:
-cheapest sharp bokeh you will get bar none
-short telephoto is a useful length
-using a prime teaches you to compose better by "zooming" with your feet
-light and fast
-works just fine on full frame

Sure, you can get the 30mm as well, and you probably should, but not before you get the 50mm. This is SD and we are all about best bang for your buck.

Lastly, if you really want to get a wider angle of view, you can play around by having fun with this widely copied method:
Brenizer [buiphotos.com]

mohan37 05-10-2013 05:16 AM

Wasn't criticizing. Just saying that 50mm is "nifty" because of the classic balance of utility it provides. That balance isn't there when you use it on a crop frame. You can travel the world with a true 50mm lens; an 80mm is not nearly as universal.

And no, pretty much everyone does not understand converting focal length. I'd venture to say a healthy portion of people looking at T3i-level bodies do not. Again not a criticism, but an opportunity to educate.

Also FYI, for anyone still reading this threat, my lens shipped yesterday.

Lastly, if you really want to get a wider angle of view, you can play around by having fun with this widely copied method:

Also FYI, for anyone still reading this threat, my lens shipped yesterday.

I agree wholeheartedly.

And mine just shipped too! So excited, I am leaving for vacation in 2 weeks and was hoping to bring it along.

For those that mention their purchased lens shipped, does it show it to be in transit? I received a tracking number 3 days ago and still no information. Had I done my research on 1saleaday I would have purchased elsewhere. I did read about them on other forums and this whole thing with providing tracking numbers but not actually shipping the item is pretty typical for these guys. I too am hoping that I receive my lens before an upcoming trip in two weeks but based on reviews I dont believe it will happen, even with tracking number in hand.

As I remember they use one of those weird mail innovations services where your package usually shows up before the tracking ever starts working.

MIne appears to actually be in transit. Still not out of Florida, but it shows having moved from Hialeah to Riviera Beach to Jacksonville. Started on the 9th, hasn't moved since the 11th.

Mine has finally arrived in my state. Waiting for the handoff to USPS, and then it should be here in one day.
