Amazon reviews are really bad for this camcorder. Even at $20 its not worth it.

yes, thanks. not very promising from the amazon reviews. i've been on the lookout for a cheap (~150$ or less) waterproof camera for an upcoming trip. anyone have any other recommendations? even the higher end cameras seem to have iffy reviews.

Toby16custom 05-18-2013 08:22 AM

I have the Kodak ZX5, really nice little unit for around $100~

It's no GoPro but it's pretty fun for family vacations/pool/kayaking

Suzanna17 05-18-2013 08:23 AM

Is it better than the ZX3?

supperman 05-18-2013 08:50 AM

In for 1. Thanks OP. I was looking for a cheap camera for kayaking and this fit the bill perfectly.

Looks like the sup(p)ermen are birds of a feather on this deal!

maur 05-18-2013 09:01 AM

on the other hand if you're "NOT" taking this into the water the reviews aren't bad. You have a water proof device that has an opening for SD cards. My guess is these people either aren't closing the doors correctly, their kids are doing it and not getting a seal or any number of other reasons. The camera could be good, just the fact that the closing mechanism isn't designed for idiots and fool-proof. Some guys said they're tech savy but just because your tech savy doesn't mean you can perfectly seal a camera who's sealing mechanism isn't a surefire every time. I'd think that if you're not going to be throwing this in the water you can get away with the $20 cost.

Yeah, I have zx3, old model and love it. picture quality is pretty good compare with similar price ranges. Easy to carry and use. As someone mentioned, do not expect something like go pro. I'm not sure this model but only downside of zx3 was no flash light for snapshot.

I agree with this assessment. On other notes, I love how tiger calls the CMOS 720p quality without actually telling you much. The CMOS is 1/4" according to Adorama, so fairly typical of pocketbook camcorders (1/4" to 1/5", the flip is 1/4.5"). As such, good deal at $20.

Buy clear waterproof camera pouch from ebay or amazon. It works well.
I have a several waterproof devices but never use without those pouch when I go to water sports. It sounds silly use waterproof devices in waterproof pouch but none of devices are 100% waterproof and accident can happen.

GunMan 05-18-2013 09:37 AM

In 4 1. Lower risk kayaking than with S100 in a ziplock bag...

Compras 05-18-2013 09:54 AM

I have this camera (paid $40, white one) and it works perfect! I used it under the water and have great videos. In for another one for a present. Thanks OP!

apple8888 05-18-2013 09:59 AM

Does this have image stabilization?
I can't find it on the spec.

TIA

Craigslist and buy a gopro if its for a trip and you want legit video.

Be very careful about reviews at Tiger Direct or Vitacost....if you post a negative...even if you bought the item...it somehow does not get posted.

Amazon is pretty legit...I posted a negative about a router (which had same problem others had) and it was posted...

Interesting that most of the TD reviews use the words "great" and "amazing" a little too liberally....

frugalbrutus 05-18-2013 11:39 AM

there are a variety of enclosures for the camera you may already own, search on amazon.

snorkel example for $33 (I used a few times, works fine)
http://www.amazon.com/Underwater-...ase+sd1000

scuba example for $140 (nice, works well, made for specific model of camera)
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-WP-DC...water+case

and this odd duck for $20. (i never tried this)
http://www.amazon.com/Polaroid-Di...water+case

You can get a refurbished Kodak zx3 for under $80. Underwater video and dry land video work well. Pictures aren't the best but they are acceptable. I'm actually on my second one. My first one I broke diving and the salt water just ate the internals. Not the fault of the camera it states 3 meters and I went down about 30 feet the day it broke. For all I know I could have been the cause of it by not closing it tightly (other than 30ft down part). Went down the day before to 20 feet no problems. 2nd one is still going strong even after being singed slightly by being too close to a campfire, I think.

Got this same camcorder from BestBuy last week for $10 delivered, no rebate. This isn't hot.

MySD012 05-18-2013 02:14 PM

after 2 yrs my ZX3 got water inside....not sure if I would purchase another Kodak product at this moment....

Yea im totally not expecting spectacular image quality. Im really only using it to capture my fishing trips. People tend to not believe my fishing stories... :(

eyeslick 05-18-2013 07:02 PM

i have a fuji waterproof camera - it gets lousy reviews all the time, people getting water in it. they don't read the directions, mine has not leaked in 3 years of snorkeling.
this Kodak may indeed leak, but for $20 .... or people can not close the latch correctly.

I don't know if it got there or not. But BestBuy.com had them in stock for about 2-3 days at that price...

anewdayrising79 05-18-2013 11:11 PM

Don't trust tech reviews on Amazon; they're usually written by mouth breathers that don't know what they're doing or what they're talking about. I have this camera, use it on my kayak and it works just fine. You'll get video you can expect from a decent camera phone, which is fine for what I use this for. Thumbing through those reviews, most of these people are dumb asses.
