These are the netbooks of 2013.

kaubay 05-23-2013 12:56 PM

Great price and will jump if I did not paid $450 2~3 months ago. Must resist .....

norazi 05-23-2013 01:02 PM

these are super cheap, but man bay trail is literally around the corner... 2x performance and battery life

steppedinit 05-23-2013 01:03 PM

Good thing they don't come with the keyboards otherwise no way could I resist.

i bit.. i at worst i can resell for at least $250 at the end of the year and pick up a bay trail tablet

Mr.Le 05-23-2013 01:10 PM

Used ATIV 500T tablets were $360-390 from Amazon Warehouse up until yesterday. I thought that was a decent price then, but with the new price drop to $312, it seemed significantly cheap enough to post to SlickDeals.

I get about 9hrs of battery life on this tablet. I don't know if I really need 18hrs, since it's only almost dead at the end of the night. This is a great deal, and even I'm thinking about getting one for the wife. The digitizer is really slick, and definitely get the Poetic folio case with it for $15 - great case!

F4ith 05-23-2013 01:13 PM

What's the difference between used - like new and used - very good? Anybody know?

Edit: Too hard to resist. Bit on the like new condition with $7 extra.

Oh sorry, I wasn't saying it's not a good deal. I thumbed up. Just saying they ARE a good deal (low price) BECAUSE the new ones are right around the corner. (Of course in tech something new is always right around the corner.)

Anyway, I can see why somebody would want a tablet now and pick this up for what is a great price. But for others it is best to wait until the new batch comes out. *shrug*

I bought mine new with a keyboard. Used it for a couple days, and it has been undocked since. Haven't had a real need to write anything longer than a few sentences on the tablet. nice to have, but I don't think you'd really miss having it since it's more portable without the extra thickness and weight. If you really had to write something long, you may as well just connect a regular keyboard to it.

Windows RT or full 8?

well the point of the power efficiency in bay trail is not just battery life... they can bump up the clock speeds much higher and afford the power hit

so say a bay trail tablet can get 18hrs with 2x better performance of clover trail... well they can just bump up the speeds to 3x performance and still get 8-12hrs

im getting this and reselling when bay trail tablets come out... at the worst i will lose $50-100 in depreciation but thats nothing for the extra productivity i will get for the next 6 months

This tablets works fine for basic tasks - the extra power is not needed by many people. If somone wants this then buy it. It's a a never ending cycle to wait for the next better thing.

Anyone that has one. Does One Note run well on this? Does it have trouble converting handwriting to text because of the limited processor? I kind of want a Surface Pro specifically for this, but I don't know if it's really worth the price...

Nope, not this version. The one that comes with AT&T LTE does not have the S-Pen and should be cheaper than this.

having used an atom netbook for a good while as an everyday machine, Id say anyone on the fence hold off for bay trail. The jump to quad core atom with DDR3 support up to 8GB is definitely worth the upgrade. These are capped at 2gb ddr2, which on my win 7 netbook, seemed to be a real bottle neck for media consumption more so than the crappy dual core atom. I liken it to buying a pentium M machine on sale for 40% off just before the core duo's hit the market on laptops and really changed the game for future-proof useability.... of course, if you really want/need the win 8 tablet now, hard to beat a $350 price thats practically phone-os tablet money.

crazychomp 05-23-2013 01:35 PM

53 left in stock.

SittingMoose 05-23-2013 01:36 PM

Is it worth waiting for Intel's Haswell chips? Apparently those are coming out in like a month right? It sounds like Baytrail won't come out until end of the year.

I'm looking to buy a W8 tablet for my dad and I'm wondering if I should just get one now or wait a month (he leaves the country on business in June and needs the tablet then).

Kammander 05-23-2013 01:41 PM

I got this on the cowboom sale. Its a great tablet, if your dad just web surfs, checks stocks, and does the occasion video chat this would be perfect. As for this being a full windows 8 tablet, your dad will probably not even use the desktop, just about any old game I installed on it ran at like 8-10fps. This lead me to believe that having full windows on these tablets is a joke with the atom processor. Overall I did end up returning mine figuring I could get a dirt cheap Windows RT one since that's all I ever used in the 14 days I had it. I been monitoring the prices on these things, and if they fall below $300 ill rebuy it. Luckily for me I am not in a rush and I don't have to have it, so I can wait. If its for your dad I am pretty sure he will like it.

This version is much better unless you want cellular data on the tablet. Waste of money in my opinion.

You're spot on. He just wants email, web surfing, skype, office, and loooooong battery life. I figured it would be a good idea to wait for the chips just because of improved technology. I also thought I should get him full Windows 8 just in case. But now I'm wondering if I can just score a cheap-o RT tablet.

For his need this would be perfect. Battery life for me even with heavy use lasted me a whole 10 hour work day, with like 10% left. Played a lot of mahjong/solitaire on slow days. For emails and such its so easy to keep up to date, literally 1 icon and its all there, I don't see how he could not like it. Also the stylus is great if you plan on taking hand written notes. I used mine a few times even for drawing it worked well.

Looks like the deal is dead now, gut definitely it will be popping back up sooner or later.

Strictly IMHO, but if you want to have an actual, non frustrating user experience - wait for the Bay Trail tablets. 2gb RAM and an underpowered graphics core is a recipe for frustration. The current Atom CPU is probably adequate (but certainly no more than that), but the "role players" in this machine are kind of a farce when it comes to a full blown OS.

This tablet being discussed, from a power standpoint, on par with a Galaxy Note 2. A Note 2 running Jelly Bean? Scorcher. A Note 2 running Windows 8? Eh, probably not so much. Conversely, the Bay Trail tablets are supposed to knock the socks off current ARM A15 SOC's. I mean, if you know you'll be doing nothing past web surfing, video watching and low end games - it'll...probably...do. But anybody expecting this to come out of the box and offer a front line Windows 8 experience - will likely be disappointed.

Just know what you're getting into, and what your expectations are, and you'll be fine.

Just (2013-05-25; 0506 EST) Picked up a 'Good' condition from Amazon Warehouse for $289.27. One-day delivery due to memorial day will arrive Wednesday.

I hope it works as well as an iPad I was hoping to get from the Cowboom deal. Those didn't even come with chargers and definitely were dented. Amazon Warehouse Deals definitely has never let me down. The thought of using full Windows and Wacom digitizer made this an overwhelmingly easy choice for me though. Lets hope I can live without a retina-like display.

Is anyone having a problem with your tablet's screen? Mine seems to "gently" dim intermittently. Sometimes it dims for a second or two and gets bright again. Sometimes it stays dim.

The experience is similar to what you may encounter when you unplug a laptop's AC adapter and the screen dims to save the battery. Except in my case, it happens regardless of whether AC adapter is plugged or not.

Thanks for any input.

dang such old post and you probably figured it out ages ago but its called auto dimming or brightness control feature automated by windows. you can disable it. came across this cuz i was just about to sell my ativ500t and as always when that happens, i get second thoughts about the sale....

Thanks for the info. So, it's a Windows 8 thing, not a hardware-specific behavior? Too bad I did not know about it at the time as I would have disabled it and maybe kept the Samsung tablet. Not knowing that it was a "feature", I ended up sending the tablet back to Amazon.

I actually just recently learned about that feature when I saw a Lenovo tablet in action. But the Lenovo laptop had a much more predictable and consistent dimming behavior. My Samsung tablet was very erratic. So, after all, I don't necessarily regret returning it. Better safe than sorry.
