I think I remember the refurb one being version 2. This one doesn't say that so I guess it's version 1. There are the new and old versions of these. What the differences are I don't know. The hacked ROM thread seem to indicate that at least the touchscreen is difference since that ROM only works with the new version.

could barely have much apps (games) with an 8 gig, 4 gig would be good for browsing or social/media apps.

this better and more stable than the POS colby?

Would this be able to handle Blogging? Like saving/uploading pictures online and adding text in WordPress?
I tried on a 1st gen Kindle Fire and it was pretty awkward. Looking for an alternative since I no longer have a laptop.

I think these tablets can become insanely popular if donated to all 42nd street ladies. Just an idea for Ematic CEO.

83tnaznav 07-18-2013 09:12 AM

My nephew got one of these and it was locked out of the Google Play Store.
Is this device still locked out?
Is there a way to get the play store on this tablet?

Thanks.

parrot123 07-18-2013 09:13 AM

List price $249.99, Now $39.99. Nice Joke.

mitchel 07-18-2013 09:16 AM

Can you load apps on the MicroSD card or is that just for photos/videos?

Can you access the Google App store or any other store?

Add a ROM to gain access to the play store. A lot of the low-end tablets are locked out.

Actually, I think it is this one(there are many Ematic models @ 7"):

http://www.ematic.us/tablets/egs004

However, it does not show or say Google Play, which most of the models do not have.

hp79 07-18-2013 09:19 AM

I checked out their webpage, and every single product of theirs (they have so many different tablet models) looks really crappy / low quality. I understand this is a $40 tablet, but I don't think it's even worth wasting the money on this for anything. What are people planning to use this for? Skype? Email? Maybe the low resolution will help make it feel smoother despite the slow cpu, but I don't think it'll work well as a web browser or even email because the lack of resolution. Also in case this is your first Android, it's going to ruin the whole android experience.

42nd street ladies ... like Minnie Mouse and Ariel the Little Mermaid. 42nd street has not had a reputation as being filled with lady walkers of the night since the big gentrification push in 1990s.

On the YouTube listed above he posts an alternative store in the comments. I don't understand why Play wouldn't work though.

Agree. It's amazing how some will crap on a product line when they are trying to compare a crab-apple to a Red Delicious (i.e. "apple" to "apple" comparison). Some expect the Apple/iPad experience out of a $40 tablet which is very unlikely.

Instead, get the current Nexus 7 for around $150/$170 instead while it's on special since the Nexus 7.2 is coming out soon. Save that $250 from NOT buying an iPad to <insert your choice of activity here>.

JuryDuty 07-18-2013 09:29 AM

It's irritating. I wish the seller just said what model this was. It seems like one of the models has Google Play and therefore would be a better deal...the other does not.

If you just want it for Skype, Kindle and Evernote, this is really quite a nice deal, especially for your kids....IF it's the right model.

I'm about 90% sure this is the 005 model--WITHOUT Google Play--NOT the 004 model. If you compare the photos on the manufacturer website with the seller's photos, it looks like the 005.

It also lines up with what's in the YouTube video review posted above, and that's the 005.

So just know you may not have access to the Play store, and that could be a deal-breaker. But if you want it for some basic applications, $40 is still a good price.

tennis8363 07-18-2013 09:34 AM

That was the refurb from yesterday. This one is definitely not that one. The refurb has a 1.2Ghz CPU. This one has a 1Ghz CPU. So it's not the 004 or 005 either.

Posted towards the bottom of the listing

Please note actual box may state Android 4.0 however this item is actually running Android 4.1, you can verify this through the settings on the device. This error in printing on the box has allowed us to pass on the savings to you! so comes with a one year warranty direct from the manufacturer.

SlvrFox 07-18-2013 09:52 AM

This may not be any Model number exactly, because of this:

"Please note actual box may state Android 4.0 however this item is actually running Android 4.1, you can verify this through the settings on the device. This error in printing on the box has allowed us to pass on the savings to you! so comes with a one year warranty direct from the manufacturer."

This is why they don't list a Model number.

slickNslider 07-18-2013 09:52 AM

Well this is one of the "Pro" versions has Dual Cameras...

So the Previous FPDeal is completely different OP. Some people are saying this isn't even the Genesis Prime. All very catchy and worth while sounding names, I might add.

This eBay seller is cranking out both refurbs. I'd use this for the internet or as an e-reader. It would amazing if the YouTube vids played well let alone any stored video playback...
But everyone is asking about the Play Store? Apps crash all the time and freeze these things quite a bit... Look for ROMS if you'd like. You're just asking for a disappointment.

These are all refurbs. I've had my try on other side of the pond refurbs. So I should have always been more selective and listened to some of the SDeal Trolls. Model numbers aren't shown because they crank out different ones all the time. I'll be surprised if they are all the same. Maybe they'll all be black but doubtful everyone will get the exact same one. NOTE: Under listing it will always state: "Tablet" and nothing else to help us keep wondering which &" inch model this is. They were more expensive and heavier. It may be getting better. Good luck.

theshwam 07-18-2013 09:53 AM

Decided to go ahead and give this a go. If nothing else, I am curious to see how good or bad the tablet experience is at the lowest end of the market.

Once again, it CAN be rooted.

Besides, there is an app called 1mobile market, which gives one access to the market almost the size of GP.

jleonard711 07-18-2013 10:36 AM

I've snagged several of these cheap $30-$40 tablets when they go on sale, and while they are by no means powerhouse or full-feature tablets they do serve their purpose. I have one mounted beneath the upper cabinets in the kitchen to use for recipes or to watch videos on while cooking, 2 of them as HTPC remotes in different rooms, 1 as a digital picture frame on a stand in the family room, and 2 for my daughter - one mounted to the back of the headrest in the car to watch movies on, and another to carry around and play with. In all I have probably spent around $200 for 6 tablets which all serve their specific purposes very well. And then for my personal tablet I have a really nice Asus which of course blow them all away, but then again it was nearly 10 times more expensive as well.

My point is that these cheap off-brand tablets can definitely be useful, but they certainly aren't a replacement for having a solid good quality tablet for everyday use.

Android has allowed apps to be moved to the SD card for quite some time now. This is a native function of Android and does not require root. I don't remember which version enabled it, but it's as simple as this:
http://droidlessons.com/how-to-mo...e-sd-card/
Of course, one has to have a device with an SD card slot and a card inserted for this to work.

That may be a feature on some android devices, but it seems to be hit or miss. I know my acer500 had no such button for versions 3.0-4.0. Users of this particular tablet are saying that it's not an option for this one....

Have you actually done this without using a third party app on a rooted tablet? In the past on 3.0 and newer android it would not save apps or app data to external_sd even when it asks if you want to.

Yes, I have several of my apps on my SD card, on the Pro 2 model. It was $29.99 on yesterday's SD(Deal not card :). I paid $59.99 several weeks ago( but got it for $24.xx with eBucks)

Well that's good to hear for those that got in on this one, I just knew other users were reporting that they couldn't move apps to sd, but maybe it was just specific apps that blocked it. I know it's a feature that many tablets do not support.

some ideas where horsepower isnt necessary:

in car entertainment
dedicated home lighting/hvac control
music player
image and pdf viewer

blah i could go on and on but there is no point.

Hmm..

In car entertainment -> it's going to be a crap experience with frequent stuttering because the lack of cpu power. I thought of this too, and in-car entertainment systems would go well together with Freedompop's OverdrivePro.

Image/PDF viewer -> resolution is crap, which I think is important for image/PDF viewers. Once you try to scroll a page in a PDF viewer, you'll most likely experience horrible stutters. Even my HTC One stutters when viewing PDF files.

Music player -> isn't it just better to use a mp3 player for that?

Dedicated home lightning / hvac control -> If you got the money for that kind of system to be installed at home in the first place, wouldn't you just get a ipad mini or nexus 7, something in those lines?

i bought the ematic genesis. how good is the resistive display? can i use more than one finger? do i have to push really hard? thanks so much.

depends. playback of local content and GPS shouldnt be a big deal. particularly if you are using an app to make the interface more car friendly.

also if you have a whiney kid surely there is some game or paint app they could pass the time with.

again, depends. if this is your cheapy bench tablet where you risk damaging a more expensive unit, it might make sense. im thinking like loading up a schematic and having the ability to zoom if needed for quick bench reference.

image viewer.. just something to preview/share/pass around pictures at a party or 'in the field' while you are shooting pics. could serve as a way to get pics from your non-wifi camera to the web from your hotel room, for example (without worrying if you lose/break/have it stolen)

Maybe? again depends on use case. i could see tossing this on a stand in the kitchen connected to some bluetooth speakers streaming pandora or other web radio (or local content) and not worrying about splashes or dirty fingers.

yet again, it depends on your use case, this may not be your primary controller, but you might want one as a HUD prominently displayed (maybe non-removable) to display data from your HA system, and/or be a supplementary controller for a lesser used room or entrance to your house.

So the point im trying to make is that there are plenty of uses for cheap embedded technology and im only scratching the surface. Im not trying to convince you that this is what you SHOULD do with this tablet, im simply providing examples of things this thing would be useful for to get the wheels turning.

Please note actual box may state Android 4.0 however this item is actually running Android 4.1, you can verify this through the settings on the device. This error in printing on the box has allowed us to pass on the savings to you! so comes with a one year warranty direct from the manufacturer.

This may not be any Model number exactly, because of this:

This is why they don't list a Model number.

@hightop it cant be because the one they are selling runs at 1GHz not 1.2 GHz

Go ahead and find a good one for $6.95 Shipped.:shake:
They are $12.88 and neither one has black, I don't want pink or white and I don't want to pay double.
Show me one, that's even close on price and I'll buy you a beer!;)

However, it does not show or say Google Play, which most of the models do not have.

Directly to the left of the tablet is a picture of the Google Play icon.

yeah i got the ematic genesis prime for 60

Bagira 07-19-2013 06:15 PM

I've got those tablets. Two of them. Being plugged in for at least an hour, one shows 1% charge and second one 2%.

Me worried.

Not a big deal for this price, but still..if batteries can't be charged, it's a problemo.

That one (ematic genesis prime) is also a Capacitive Screen, not resistive.

Oops. Wrong thread.

Got mine today and the screen is messed up. I'll report back on how the seller wants to handle it.

Sorry to hear about your bad fortune. Mine is due tomorrow, I'll check in with my initial thoughts after spending a hour or so with it.

Good Luck everyone!

So the actual model no. EGM002.
First impression: Solid build, possibly TN screen (awful viewing angle), no Play Store but has 1mobile market.
After playing 2.5 hours with it, overall impression, no too bad. Fast enough for Facebook, YouTube, Skype, Angry Birds, Pandora
Battery dropped from 72% to 17% in 2h35m with wifi. I would say it would be fine for 4-5hours.

LightSaber 07-29-2013 08:51 PM

I received the model EGB103. First impressions are positive. WiFi connection was good. Streaming from Pandora, You tube, DS Audio worked fine. Official XBMC Remote works good. 1Mobile store seems to have a lot of popular apps.

Resolution is not so good for e-reading.
Screen seems to have some scratches. But I think there is a protective film and the scratches are on the film. I can see a bubble in the film at one end.

Overall for $40 this is a great deal for a capacitive screen android tablet that can be put to several specific uses. But no way can it be your primary tablet. But I guess we all knew that going in.

I have decided to keep mine.

+1

Plus Netflix works too, although it is a little slow to start. From the 1Mobile Market.

$40 seems even more like a no brainer after playing with this tablet for a couple of hours.

PS. Try Opera Mini web browser if you haven't already.. It works great on this tablet.
