Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler $17 after $10 Rebate

2 Attachment(s)
First post so please be gentle

Amazon [amazon.com] has the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus for $28.22 - $10 MIR [images-amazon.com] = $18.22 (tax and shipping not included).

I've been looking for this cpu cooler to go down for a while now. Not the cheapest it's been, but still a pretty good deal.

For some reason, the price keeps changing from $27.84 to $28.22. When it is @27.84, the MIR form doesn't show, but when it is $28.22, the MIR does show. I still linked the MIR in this post so hopefully it goes through.

Please let me know if I need to add or remove anything.

I just bought this cooler from Amazon on 10/24 and I didn't see a rebate form. Filling out the form now and getting my $10 back.

Thanks!!!

iceaco 10-28-2013 04:25 PM

I wish this would be applicable to Newegg too.. Shipping kills the deal for me.

Also, I just built my first computer.
1. Why would I need this over stock cooler
2. Should I buy this or wait for deal on 212 EVO?

Xymox 10-28-2013 04:26 PM

Tax............check
Shipping.....check

The linked rebate form says "Valid at Amazon.com only" (red ink in the fine print), so it won't work on Newegg.

1) This cooler should make a HUGE difference over any stock cooler. It'll keep your CPU temps down and allow it to run stable (especially important if you plan to overclock at all).
2) I was stuck on this same question, but I opted to go with the Plus over the Evo model. From benchmarks, the Evo does seem to run a few degrees cooler on load than the Plus, but a few degrees didn't justify the additional cost to me.

nehcney 10-28-2013 04:48 PM

EDIT: Not sure what's going on but the price kept dropping so I've already cancelled and rebought twice. It is now $27.50 and the MIR doesn't show but I'm assuming you can still use it. Also the tax has disappeared as well!

Assuming the MIR is still valid, total is now $27.50 - 5% Chase Freedom - $10 MIR = $16.12

Bought and repped!

Demiurge 10-28-2013 05:39 PM

For this price I might as well pick one up. I don't even OC my CPU but it runs close to 90 on prime95.

Arctic601 10-28-2013 05:46 PM

I own this and it works great, but heads up, the installation instructions are awful. My recommendation is look for a video online and toss the instructions cause the ones provided a year ago left me more confused than anything.

kdesgais 10-28-2013 05:52 PM

Best value CPU cooler on the market. Miles ahead of any stock cooler and much quieter too. Also, very little difference between the Plus and EVO. I use this in my own budget gaming rig.

we-was 10-28-2013 06:00 PM

Did Amazon change their " Free shipping with $25" purchase? Now, it says you have to spend $35 to get free shipping? That's sucks if true. Anyone know if this is only for this deal, or is it now for all sales?

azilyx 10-28-2013 06:06 PM

These usually go down to $5 or less than $10 on black friday on new egg.

anyone had experience going from ZALMAN CNPS10X OPTIMA to this? the zalman makes clicking noise when temperature heats up. and is it a simple swap or will i have to take off back plate and stuff?

Because the stock "cooler" will let your CPU get too hot when under load, and make a crapload of noise when the fan speed is maxed out.

I have an i5 3570K, and with the stock cooler, it actually went into thermal-throttling mode while playing BF4 (beta). After I put the 212 cooler on, no more high temp issues. :)

eibgrad 10-28-2013 06:14 PM

Be careful you actually buy from Amazon, and NOT someone else and FULFILLED by Amazon, or the rebate won't count. Very easy to make that mistake w/ all the swapping Amazon does between sellers.

I would figure your fan on the Zalman is just going bad. The easiest thing to do would be to replace the fan or just re-lubricate it if possible.

However, if you do wish to replace the heat sink itself with a 212, then if the screws don't fit the already existing back mounting bracket, you'll probably have to pull the motherboard out of the case and replace the bracket with the one that comes with the 212.

Thanks! You saved me on this one. When it got added to cart, it was a third-party seller. I had to cancel the order and place it again, making sure to find the Amazon.com seller this time.

Jamesc359 10-28-2013 06:32 PM

This is a great CPU cooler. With my 96 watt processor I often see idle temps sit at a few degrees Celsius over ambient. Under load I'll usually see approximately 10-12° over ambient. It doesn't get much better than that on air alone.

One word of warning though. The people handling their rebates are somewhat lacking in due diligence. I've received two rebates with horrible typos in my name and the last rebate I sent for didn't arrive. I had to contact Cooler Master and the rebate is still "pending".

Are you sure? The fine print says "Valid at Amazon.com only." Does that void purchases fulfilled by amazon? I would imagine that still counts.

I doubt it would fit. These things are huge. You'll need about 16cm or 6¼ inches clearance from your CPU to the inside of the side panel. It's a tight fit even in my gaming case.

I've been dealing w/ rebates for a VERY long time, well back to the 90's, so I've been down this road before. When they say Amazon.com that usually means literally Amazon, NOT third party sellers THROUGH Amazon. In fact, many rebates state it explicitly to avoid this very problem. In this case, they don't. But it's very risky to assume otherwise give the history of rebates.

nehcney 10-28-2013 06:47 PM

That's pretty tricky then. I cancelled my order and re-ordered through Amazon as seller. Thanks for the heads up :)

Definitely not.

But if you need really good cooling, you can get this: http://www.noctua.at/main.php?sho...=46&lng=en (Noctua NH-L12) and take off the 120mm fan then wedge it on the bottom where the 90mm is (after you take the 90mm off of course). This will fit in the GD05. I put it in my brother's GD04 just like that and it works really well.

Note as well, the rebate form only shows up under the Amazon listing, NOT for third party sellers, even if fulfilled by Amazon! Another clue that third parties don't count.

I also own this. Best air cooler period. Add another fan for push/pull cooling.
It's big, make sure it fits your case.
Also, you attach it to the underside of your motherboard... so take that into consideration.
I followed a video on my tablet, made installation easy.
Highly recommended; great for overclocking on a budget.

The two will probably perform on similar levels. 212+ is on par with many low and mid tier AIO liquid coolers. So the choice is yours on what you want to deal with.

Demiurge 10-28-2013 07:50 PM

If you buy this and plan on putting it into your system just remember to pick up some quality thermal paste (not sure if it comes with it?) and some rubbing alcohol, see YouTube videos on how to remove old, and apply new thermal paste. It does make a difference. .

So for clarity, this only comes with one fan? The picture shows two.

1. If you have to ask, you don't need it.

2. The difference in cooling is 1-2 degrees. If you are not sure if the difference matters to you, then you don't need to wait for a 212 Evo.

It comes with some semi-okay thermal paste. I didn't use it, so I don't know how well it works, but most benchmarks put it at 1½ °C hotter than AS5.

It only comes with one fan. There is brackets/clips so you can attach a second fan if you want. The photo is very misleading IMO.

I have the CNPS10X Optima on a Phenom II X4 and it runs cool and quiet. The Optima's stock fan never gives me any trouble, under load or not. The Optima's a great cooler; you've just got a defective fan. Get one of the free after rebate 120mm Kingwin fans from TigerDirect and you're golden.

because it cools better than stock, which will make the processor degrade less over time because of heat. It would allow overclocks if you look into that. The only difference will be the fan they include.

The bottom heat pipes are also different from Plus and Evo. Plus has aluminum between the copper pipes at the base, whereas the Evo has the copper pipes touching each other at the base, if that makes any sense.

Personally, I would go for the Zalman CNPS10x Optima. They are usually cheaper after rebate and in my personal experience cools better than Hyper 212+ and are quieter too. Zalman has a pressure mounting system so it can make better contact with the cpu. Granted my Hyper 212 does have a better looking polished base than the Zalman, but the Zalman was able to cooler better according to HWMonitor when I Prime95 both CPU coolers to test.

It depends on what you're cooling. Assuming a well managed and ventilated case the 212+ or EVO will hold even with most single fan 120mm AIOs until you go beyond 125 watts. Once you go into the 150+ realm (easy to get there with an 8350) the water cooler will outperform any member of the 212 family.

The 212 is well liked over at frosty tech, and the EVO is quite happy sitting atop my 8350 (with one fan it got a little toasty, but two made it nice and cool) so I can definitely recommend any of the 212s.

I have this cooler. It's excellent, though you should make sure your ram slots are at least 2" away from the CPU or you'll run into overhead issues.

I slapped another fan on the otherside and my CPU never gets about like 90F.

It will improve temps.

Keep in mind you WILL have to uninstall/ unscrew your motherboard and all the wires to put on the supporting backplate. It goes

behind the motherboard.

It's the turtle looking bracket, not the X-shaped one.

It will give you a chance to improve your cable management!

Best bang for the buck CPU heatsink. Awesome and quiet. Be warned though, you will have to remove your motherboard (unless you are lucky and have a cutout in your case's motherboard plate) to mount the retention mechanism. Also the instructions are not great. But anyone who builds there own computers can probably figure it out.

I have a 212+ on my Phenom 2 X4 955 @ 4ghz 24/7 (4.2ghz when I want to push it) and it does great, the stock heatsink cannot compare.

Be warned, these things are HUGE. Like 5 inches tall huge. But with great size comes great (responsibility? yuk yuk) cooling.

Demiurge 10-28-2013 09:43 PM

I'm going to take this to my microcenter and have them price match it to the rebate cost. I'll also pick up some silver thermal paste and some blue LED fans for it since my case is FULL of LEDs since I found that roll of them on Amazon for $5

I have the exact CPU cooler and and Hyper 212+ and they both work well. You simply have a bad fan. Install a Cougar fan or a Gentle Typhoon or a Noctua and you will have a very, very nice CPU cooler!

And yes, you will need to pull the back plate off.

I also have the exact Seidon 120 [$35 AMIR] and look forward to using it. It has excellent reviews. It isn't much of a hassle to install these closed loop CPU coolers and they create a lot more room in your case for better cooling.

Pretty good deal on a very good value CPU cooler.

I wouldn't recommend a 2nd fan. It's just going to get noisier and the performance isn't that much better. I recommend a Push config and aim it towards your rear exhaust. The rear exhaust fan sort of acts like a pull fan.

If you do decide to go push/pull config, I recommend buying 2 matching fans because if the fans don't match and have difference CFMs then it creates turbulence which creates even more noise.

Lastly, this is my favorite cooler. You can spend double, but you won't get double performance. Best bang for your buck right here. There are like 20 CPU coolers that copied this exact model and they are all in the $30-40 range. aluminum fins, cooper heatpipes, lots of surface area. Even at $18 (these have been as low as $10) it still beats what you're going to buy on the market.

SomeKindOfChief 10-29-2013 01:31 AM

I'm sure it was just my bad luck but 2 out of 3 of these came with bad buzzing fans for me. Ended up switching to their Gemini model and no problems with that. Good low profile too.

I'm a little puzzled why this cooler is still being manufactured. The cost of manufacturing the EVO can't be all that different, and I thought the EVO was supposed to be an update, not a separate product tier. Yet here we are years later and the "Plus" is still around. Strange!

Assuming the manufacturing process is similar and only materials very, it affords Cooler Master the ability to create the perception of a premium and sub-premium product and to charge more for the former.

They say it can fit tower coolers, but it would be great to hear from someone with experience.

Answering my own question: Phenom M case can accommodate tower fans up to 160mm and this is 158.5mm. So I guess it should fit.

Anyone know if this comes with some thermal compound?

m6284505 10-29-2013 09:11 AM

This looks like the one I have and I threw the box away.
Anyhow, I have an Antek 900 and the side door will not close because the thing is so big.

<EDIT>
Opps, I have the Corsair Air Series A70 Performance CPU Cooler CAFA70 that is similar to this. Let me check the sizes of the two and see if they are similar.

<EDIT 2>
They are very close in size. Just an FYI, check the size on this item (the A70 size on amazon is wrong) and make sure it fits all the way.

The stock cooler brings my I7-2700k to about 42C at idle. Now after using the Hyper 212 (non plus), my CPU is at 30C when idle and 42C under heavy loads. The screws that this heat sink uses is far superior than the plastic breakable clips that come with the stock CPU cooler, ensuring that the heat sink makes a proper connection with the CPU. only negative i found is that the right fan may block your DIMM 1 RAM slot, but the fan height can be adjusted in order to make enough room for RAM in DIMM 1. I highly recommend this CPU Fan combo especially for overclockers who want water cooling results without the water cooler.

Bought one of these over a month ago based on all the reviews. I've not seen a huge drop in temperature but it does run quieter than the jet engine standard cooler that came with my AMD Phenom II CPU. I think my temps dropped 1~2 degrees according to speedfan.

I ordered the non-plus model and it did come with a tube of CoolMaster's own thermal paste. I ended up using my own Arctic MX-4 thermal compound.

Not sure if the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU / Fan combo may be too big for your case. If you're going mATX or even the ITX route, I'd recommend water cooling. Check out the:

CORSAIR Hydro Series H50 Quiet Edition Water Liquid CPU cooler, 120mm Fan
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6835181010

It's small, quiet, cold and ideal for overclocking. Enjoy.

Great! Thank you for the quick reply!

Nice cooler, though I think I bought mine for around $12-$15 awhile ago. It is BIG, so make sure you have the clearances.

I recommend the Cougar, a Gentle Typhoon, or Noctura. Can't go wrong with any of these fans...but my favorite out of them all is the Gentle Typhoon. Nothing compares to the quality of the G.T's.

I highly recommend either the Cougar, Gentle Typhoons, or Noctura fans. Can't go wrong with any of these quality fans. But my favorite of all is the Gentle Typhoons. Their quality and performance is off the chart...

Thanks for the response, repped:) Wow, that really sucks! Guess I'll be shopping less at Amazon, especially with the tax they charge.

I have the H60 in my current rig. Can't go back to air cooling on the CPU - the closed loop liquid coolers work better, with less noise, and no maintenance. Simple and easy.
