I would definitely pass this and get the Canon 100L when it was a little more than $700 AR.

I agree with you, but, those rebates are dead for right now. So it's a $1000 lens at the moment, and may well be til April or May. If you need a macro before then, this is a great price for a very good lens. It just lacks the hybrid IS of the Canon

if I had a time masheen, I'd probably do something a little cooler. like buy stock in amazon in 08. or invest in btc in the early days. or a ton of other things. buying a 700 AR 100L is kinda low on the totem pole. but only because I already have one.

if I didn't, then it might jump to 3rd on my list

I thought this lens was pretty good. Most reviews claim it to be superior to Canon's, only thing is that it isn't weather sealed. Also, isn't this the reference lens that Popular Photography uses? They say they use it because no other lens has ever tested as sharp, or something like that.

Not every lens is the same, and with sigma you'll get more variation than Canon, but maybe you'll get a diamond.

The only Sigma lenses I'll buy are their newly redesigned models. Now that the son took over the company, they're onto something. 35 1.4 is fing amazing... So ridiculously sharp on a D800.

How is it better than Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, not the L.

Sigma is probably better for the price, but they might be close. You can check on dxomark.com.

the canon 100 macro doesn't have IS, which makes a huge difference when doing handheld macro photography. The sigma has it--so much easier to use. If you're going to do all of your shooting from a tripod, then it won't matter. I'd also take the build of the sigma over the canon, but either way you're not going to have weather-sealing.

No IS - this lens has OS

If this was the Sigma 150mm Macro, I would be all over it.

That lens is LEGENDARY.
