Reps per day

Ok, this will probably get shot down, but here's my thinking:

I know there is a limit on # of reps per day, and today I maxed out, but I couldn't have repped more than 12 or 13 people. Is there anyway that the limit of reps could be raised??? I know it is to prevent rep abuse but it is really annoying when you want to rep someone for a good deal and can't. Or maybe for your # of reps, posts, months/years you are a member can raise your limit of reps or something.

I think the rep system should be abolished. The past is not prologue.

Just because an SDer has made valuable contributions in the past does not warrant against his talking out his backside in his most recent post. Nor does it give him the lordly right to run roughshod over newer members. Likewise a low rep count does not mean the NoOb has nothing valuable to contribute. I think we should regard one another on SD in a manner similar to how we interact with one another in the real world -- according to our personal history of interactions. But a person's rep-count should have no bearing on my willingness to help him. An online forum works like a collective brain. Each member is a neuron. It works most efficiently when we each fire _whenever_ we are capable of it.

But in answer to your suggestion. Just remember to rep the person the next day.

Or maybe for your # of reps, posts, months/years you are a member can raise your limit of reps or something.

I believe that this is already the case. The longer you are a member, the more reps you are able to give in a particular day, with the max being around 15 per day.

Also, because the current rep system is private, we have no way of evaluating the QUALITY of the reps. Did they all come from a circle of rep'ing friends? Are the reps for frivolous reasons such as "I like your avatar?" And there's no rep'ing timeline. How shall I regard an SD member whose biggest contributions are years old and who has been sitting like an unproductive, tenured faculty member ever since?

If you ever suspect rep abuse, notify a mod. In the past, when abuse has been looked into (for the very reasons you've mentioned, such as "circles of repping friends") repping privlidges have been suspended for those users.

No, it is only 10 reps for everyone per 24 hour period. :sadwalk:

Trust me, even I hit this limit even still, in fact I just hit it today again. :(

I don't think we need more reps per day, but I wouldnt mind being able to choose how many reps I give someone. Like if it's a good deal, but not great...maybe I could give +2 instead of +4.
Actually if we can only rep so many people a day, then it really doesn't matter what we give them for +# reps.
Or maybe, like say I give out +4 rep points, so it could be 40 rep points per day...as opposed to 10 reps worth +4 each.

First of all you must have at Least 50 posts for your reps to count

Your reps start at 1 point

You get an additional point once you get to 500 reps

You get an additional point once you get 1000 reps

You get an additional point once you make 10,000 posts

You get an additional point for every year you're an SD member

The most rep points you can have is 4

If your reps are worth more than one you can't choose how many points to give, you must give the full amount.

Am I allowed to rep BostonGirl just because I think a woman in a tub of Cheetos is so sexy? Or would that be considered abuse?

dave1977nj 08-26-2008 10:16 AM

how do you thumbs up or down someone? (REPS)

Rep points are a way of saying thank you, gain a rank and maybe get recognition. There's no tangible value for reps and never will be. However, it is a metric that can be used to determine how helpful the user is to the community. Thusly, to keep the reputation points meaningful, we have general guidelines on how how reps should be handed out. The premise is, if it is used as a form of "thank you" for a user who did something helpful to the community, it's ok.

The following kinds of comments/usage are generally not allowed:
• "Give me rep!"
• "I'll rep you, you rep me"
• "User XYZ is almost bold"
• "Let's make User XYZ bold"
• "Let's get User XYZ to X number of reps"
Threads/post where the user offers rep points for help or favors (not disguised as trading or trivial questions) are ok. However, rep points given for contests/games or trading for value items are not allowed since it doesn't follow the "thank you" premise. Examples:
• "Answer 1+1 and get rep from me" not allowed
• "Do something trivial and get rep" not allowed
• "Beat me in game XYZ, get rep" not allowed
• "Help me find a deal on X, get rep" ok
• "Help me find a rebate form, will rep" ok
Remember, moderators can and do read your reputation comments, and comments left to you by other users.

You thumbs up/down the deal, not the person.

and one last thing..Hoseman666..please don't change your avatar to that..you almost made me beleive you were someone else

So under those guidelines, then they can rep me...because being sexy in a tub of cheetos could really help someone. And who am I to judge , if someone wants to thank me for being so darn sexy what can I say :harhar:

JK of course, don't make Mr.SD ban me again..:annoyed:
