Beer review thread

I've given my opinion in many places about the beer's i've tasted. Might as well have a thread about it. Feel free to add.

Currently having a Shiner Blonde.

A bit too light for my tastes, but a good Spring/Summer lager. Light, crisp, not too hoppy. Kind of like a hefeweisen without all the yeast. I tasted a little lemon at the first taste. Prett good. On a scale of 1 to 10, i'd give it a 7.

Special Releases:
This section is a trial run and can and may be deleted if we get little to no action in this section. If you read info about a special release, please post: Brewery, Name of beer(and style if you know it), LOCATION OF THE BREWERY, and the release day of the beer.

Once a beer is established in this list, you can make a bullet underneath it if you see it at your local liquor store(maybe city and state). If you do so, please put your username behind this posting in ( ) so if others possibly in your area want more info at to what store you saw it at, they can PM you. If you want to keep anonymous, by all means don't add your username.

Lastly, if you see old info, please update it. If this list gets cluttered and never gets updated this section will be deleted.

Stone Brewing Company - Double Bastard Ale (american strong ale), San Diego(Escondido), November 5th release date.
Avery/Russian River - Collaboration, not Litigation Ale (Belgian Strong Dark), Colorado, unsure of release date. Beermenus [beermenus.com] shows it at Burp Castle in East Village, NYC.

There are plenty of mass produced beers which are very very good and the American public typically doesn't know about them.

Lots of bubble wrap, I assume. Yes, that stuff works well. When I moved, I packed my kitchen stuff w/ that and not a single glass or dish broke during its trip halfway across the country.

it doesn't take much to ship beer... last time i shipped i used a "singles" case box and just put a single wrap of bubblewrap around each bottle...though i did put a layer of wrap on top and on bottom of each bottle...works awesome...as long as the bottles can't really move, there won't be breakage...

Yes, I agree. The main thing is to prevent movement. That's why I tried to do when I packed my kitchenware that the movers were moving, as I mentioned in a prior post. And it worked to perfection. :)

If you don't trust it to roll down a flight of stairs, or drop from shoulder height, then it needs work.

So a few days back I was ranting here about the tax increase on booze here in MA. Went up 6.25% not more than 60 days ago. So, here is a picture from this weekend of one of my State Reps buying his booze in tax free New Hampshire.

I was listening to the brewing network today. The head brewer said that IPA is 35% of their sales. That's a good chunk. Pale Ale is next in line at 25%.

ASG 09-04-2009 10:04 AM

Wow, I would not have guessed IPA and Pale make up 60% of their sales. I would have put Arrogant Bastard as having a much larger chunk of their sales than they obviously must.

IPA and PA are their 2 least intense beers that I know of. The only other one I can think of at this time that isn't real intense is Levitation. AB is considered to be a very complex beer. The vast majority of beer drinkers wouldn't like it. I love it. I think he said AB is their 3rd or 4th best seller.

I know, I guess I just didn't realize how much Stone is in the makret with "the vast majority of beer drinkers." It likely has to do with my region and beers closer to my area like Brooklyn and Sixpoint already taking more of that part of the market here but I think of Stone more as a complex brewery so the first thing I think of with them is their complex beer. Similar to how you don't think of Dogfish for their Shelter until you're in the DE area.

120 Minute Man 09-04-2009 02:55 PM

I always forget about the shelter. it's decent also, I just always take it for granted.

mattman688 09-04-2009 05:09 PM

today was awesome... started with a duchess(sp?) sour beer...awesome...then went with a blind pig(wanted bitterness), then ended with a special cask of ruination with simcoe and amarillo...my cost $0...boss opened a tab for us....

mattman688 09-05-2009 09:17 PM

oskar blues GORDON is a mighty fine beer... i think i need more...i got 1 free can from my company store...its the beer of the month...

Mavtech 09-05-2009 10:03 PM

Just had a Weyerbacher Hops Infusion IPA. Meh. It was ok. I won't buying that again.

rybal 09-06-2009 11:23 PM

Went to Stone Bistro tonight (first of a few trips this week methinks) and had Blind Pig (tasty tasty, I blew the keg), 6/6/6 Vertical Epic (don't remember it being that good, though Greg Koch wouldn't pull one from the warehouse for me last time I was @ Stone :D), Green Flash Le Freak (still not sold on Belgian IPA's), Ruination (given, delicious), and 13th Anniversary (quite good) on tap.

Looking forward to what they have next trip!

ASG 09-07-2009 08:49 PM

Tried my Furthermores this weekend. Both were unique brews unlike anything I've ever had before.

The Knotstock was an ale with brewed black pepper. You could def taste the pepper but it wasn't a spicy taste. I'd say it got the flavor it was going for but I don't see why anyone would have more than one (the first to say you've tried it).

The Oscura was a beer with coffee. Tasted freshly brewed. Most coffee tasting beer I've ever had. I gave it as a gift to my friend because he loves the taste of coffee and I don't but I made sure to have sip to see if it lived up to the hype. It certainly did IMO.

mattman688 09-07-2009 09:21 PM

oh ruination growler you are sooo good to me.

Mavtech 09-09-2009 09:33 PM

Mmmm. Surly Furious and Bender. Awesome stuff. No Cynic Ale? I'm sure you'll love Furious. I hope I find a bar that serves it while I'm in Chicago next week.

rybal 09-10-2009 06:35 AM

While I was un-bubblewrapping the Cynic Ale, I punctured it with the knife I was using. So I had to drink that one myself :)

Methinks it was not an accidental puncture, which gave you an excuse to drink it. ;)

Dogfish Punkin if you like it, is available in TX to my knowledge.

D'oh! Well, you could've thrown it in the freezer for 1/2 hr. to chill it a bit. Or pour it in a frozen glass. Speaking of which, does anyone keep an empty beer mug in the freezer so that it's really cold?

square_one 09-11-2009 11:59 AM

I picked up a bomber of troegs java head stout a few weeks ago. i think i'll have that tonight. also picked up a bomber of nugget nectar...they did a limited run...get it now, or you'll have to wait until the spring.

I have 2 of those mugs with liquid in the middle that are supposed to used for being frosted out of the freezer.

Cask fest this weekend in NYC! I'll probably be at Jimmy's 43 tomorrow hoping they didn't sell out of Black Ops tonight.

Sox.at.six 09-11-2009 12:34 PM

Had a couple of new beers recently:

Finally sampled the Pretty Things American Darling lager on draft. It was fairly good, nice and easy drinking. A little strong at 7% but you wouldn't know it from the flavor. I would drink it again, but it is pretty expensive for what it is.

Had the Harpoon Leviathan IPA this weekend again after my original mix up with Imperial Pilsner. Not bad at all, but not one of my favorite double IPA's either.

Saw the Sierra Southern Hemisphere Fresh Hop Ale on tap this weekend also. Looks like it just came out, but I haven't seen it in bottles yet. Looking forward to grabbing more of these when I do see them.

I usually have 2 pint glasses in the freezer upside down. Some will tell you that you shouldn't drink from frozen glasses. But, I've never noticed anything negative from the way I do it. Anything that touches my beer is washed with odorless dish soap.

I see. I thought about putting a pint glass or 2 in my freezer.

I don't see what's wrong w/ doing that, as long as you don't try to lick it and risk your tongue getting stuck to the glass.

Grabbed 4 bottles of 2008 Alaskan Smoked Porter while out in San Diego... looking forward to drinking those! Got PlinyE, Hop Juice, some Ballast Point, 9/9/9 (thanks Matt!), Alaskan Stout, and a nice Carmenere while out there as well.

Oh and an AB tap handle (60% off, thanks Matt!) and 2L growler (like $8 incl. glass and fill)!

Oh and an AB tap handle (60% off, thanks Matt!) and 2L growler (like $8 incl. glass and fill)!

hop juice is decent but not a standout beer...i almost worked at that brewery, but it was too far of a commute for $10 an hour...stone is much closer and a lot better deals! :whee: glad you were able to get those bottles still...not too many know about that little shop in poway, they have a decent selection, but a little pricey.

I think I'm heading over to Taylor Brewing for dinner tonight. They are only 2 miles from my hotel and have their own beers along with some guest taps.

I picked up some Kalik in the Bahamas this summer...wrapped them in my clothes and into my check-in baggage. During the flight I started having visions of them exploding, Got to my home airport, no luggage, found out it was detained in Atlanta. I was a wreck til I got my bag back...They ended up making it safely...

I'm having zero luck so far finding Surly here in the Chicago area. Sam's Spirits has a keg of it though.

While there I bought a 6 pack of Victory Hop Wollup. Brian said Victory is a solid brewer. He also said this was an APA which I thought was odd considering the name. I just cracked one open. Holy hops!! This may be one of the hoppiest beers I've ever had. It's 8.5% abv. Very tasty. I like it.

I like their Hop Devil better than their Hop Wollup. The Wild Devil is just a mess though IMO. Most agree of those I speak to that Storm King is their best.

Hoppiest beer I've had is probably Smutttynose Finest Kind but I thought it was waaaaay to bitter.

I haven't had Hop Devil. But, I had Wild Devil when I was in Minneapolis a few months ago. Interesting taste. But, I don't really care for soured beers.

This Hop Wollop packs a hop punch. Even hoppier than Hop Stoopid.

Hi guys...have any of you ever tried orange slices in your beer? I was just turned on to this ...first was with a Blue Moon, it's quite good with many beers! People put Limes in Corona, heck...this could be a nice summer drink...

I went to a Hard Rock Cafe in the Bahamas and asked for a Kalik with oranges...the bartender never heard of it. Well, he liked it and is naming a drink - Kaco's Kalik after me, so he said...I almost want to go back to see if I can order one!

Beer is good!

Mavtech 09-15-2009 06:56 PM

Finally found Surly Furious on tap. I'm eating and drinking at Sheffield's Beer Garden in north Chicago. The drive was a bitch. It's right in a college campus. Parking is horrible.

I was wondering when this thread would get snipped. It finally did. :sadwalk:

I'll have to pick up some booze for the Giants/Cowboys football party I'm hosting on Sun. night. I'm not sure what I'll get or what others will bring. I may pick up Oktoberfest seasonal beer.

BIG score today. There is a beer/wine store in SA that is going out of business. 65% off everything. Got 8 bottles of DFH 120 . 2 6ers of Victory Storm King for $4 each. 4 bombers of Hop Stoopid and Lagunitas Sumpin Sumpin for $3 each . I will be going back next week on Tuesday for the final day to buy him out.

mattman688 09-17-2009 07:58 PM

drinking devils dancer triple ipa from founders....holy crap i didn't realize this was 12% abv... pours a minimal head... cloudy but i am cool with cloudy beers... has a cherry taste, kinda reminds me of 90min in some small ways, but this one is delicious... kinda syrupy, sweet with a nice crisp bitterness at the end.... quite tasty...i wish i had more

this was after meeting a buddy in the bistro which i got a free stone ipa... then i paid $2 for a fish tail poisidian(sp?) russian imp stout which was fantastic... then i had a bomber of red rocket ale from bear republic which i got for free from stone... so yeah, this 12% abv devils dancer is going to be a sipper

Mavtech 09-18-2009 02:54 PM

4 bottles of Victory Hop Wollup are coming home on the plane with me. I wrapped them up in all my clothes in my checked luggage. That stuff is amazing. I will spare one for my buddy who was begging me to bring some for him. Just one!

Enjoying a good ole Arrogant Bastard bomber and an Ashton VSG cigar.

Matt, I ordered a few glasses from Stone last week. One of them was the Old Guardian goblet. It arrived with the Stone artwork faded in the upper left corner. Since this glass is mostly for display, I wasn't happy. I sent them an email with the below photo. Karina Parker replied back within a couple days with a tracking number for a new one. Stone rocks!

Troegs Brewery Wins Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals at GABF

HARRISBURG, PA — Tröegs Brewery took home three medals at 2009 Great American Beer Festival Competition (GABF), the largest national beer competition recognizing the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. The winners in the 78 beer-style categories were announced September 26 at the 28th Annual Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado.

Tröegs Brewery won a gold medal in the Bock category for Troegenator, a silver medal in the American-Style Stout category for Dead Reckoning, and a bronze medal in the German-Style Pilsner category for Sunshine Pils. The three medals represent the most medals won by a Pennsylvania brewery at this year’s competition.

If they had more stringent guidelines for category admissions, I'd respect the results more. I don't think they entered, but Laughing Dog in Idaho makes a tasty cream ale. Locally, Sixpoint does a pretty hoppy one that is love/hate. New Glarus probably could of won if they put in Spotted Cow, even though it isn't one of the breweries highlights. I'd take numerous macro examples over them too... Sleeman's, Genesee, even(but barely) Wexford.

The Yard House is an absolute must. 200 taps.

They are calling porters America-style stouts now? I never cared much for the dead reckoning, I like Yuenglings porter better. The troegenator on the other hand is definatly medal worthy.

Talking of PA beers, I had a few Straub Special Darks last night. Very sessionable dark lager with some nice malt tones. I always felt Straub was an underrated brewery. They only do three beers and probably would do better if they dumped those stupid green bottles. I've seen they are canning now though.

Barleywine's not normally my thing. Although I did recently find out I liked a certain barleywine (Chelsea Imperial Mild) much better on cask than on tap.

How about favorite Pumpkins or Oktoberfests?

Somebody the other night pointed out that everybody's oktoberfests are all dark yet if you went to Oktoberfest in Germany pretty much all the beers are pilsners.

My favorites are the richer ones as well. Paulaner is pretty malty, but has it's own tent over there. I drink Spaten Ofest 4 bottles at a time with my 2L Warsteiner mug. :D That's a very light example. I haven't seen Costco carry cases of it in a couple years unfortunately.

Going to put the taps on the new (to me) kegereezer this weekend. Just hadn't gotten around to doing it, but using picnic taps is getting annoying.

I cleared out my Sam Adams Longshots yesterday. The IIPA pretty interesting. I still think it's a fundamentally flawed style, & I almost never reach for one, but it's right up there with everything else I've tried.

The bock was ho-hum, the wit was barely worth noting.

A stout-ish lager is called schwarzbier (black lager). Stouts and porters are both ales. I just brewed a kick ass chocolate/coffee stout with real cocoa powder and Dunkin Donuts coffee. I wish I could share it with all you guys.

The "flavoring" in YDCS may be chocolate extract. Either way, it's yummy (in the bottle only IMO).

Drinking a Hop Stoopid with a nice tasty cigar. Brian was right, it is a good substitute for Pliny. I had the honor of finally tasting Pliny the Elder today. A couple friends brought back 2 bottles from GABF. I'm going next year. Anyone interested in planning on meeting up there next year?

Sox.at.six 10-05-2009 11:37 AM

Yeah. Hop Stoopid is fast becoming a go to IPA for me. Mighty tasty and only $4.85 for a bomber at my favorite shop. Ruination is pushing $7.50 at the same store.

Just picked up a 4-pack of the Founders Harvest Ale last night, but I haven't had a chance to drink one yet. Bought a new place on Wednesday, so I have been crazy busy with all that.

Did you try Sierra Nevada Torpedo yet? It's surprisingly hoppy. Also cheap at $7 per 6 pack.

Sam Adam's Longshot IIPA is sort of a clone of Pliny right? I've tasted a lot of similarities.

I've heard that. But, I have not had Longshot yet. It's hard to find. Hop Stoopid is not.

I have had the Longshot IIPA also. The are both very sold IPAs, but the flavor was slightly different. The Hop Stoopid has fruitier flavor and the alcohol is a little less noticeable up front. Both are relatively high ABV though.

I prefer the Hop Stopid personally. Never had Pliny so I can not make a direct comparison to either of them though.

The "flavoring" in YDCS may be chocolate extract. Either way, it's yummy (in the bottle only IMO).

Porters can be ales or lagers.

I'm back from vacation and drank too much. :woot: I loaded up on Yeungling while in NJ and PA. The only new beer I had was Otter Creek on draft which I drank at a Phillies game (the night they clinched the NL East). It was a bit too hoppy for me, but not bad. :)

Awesome. Victory Brewing comes to Florida starting next week. Hop Devil and Hop Wallop here I come!

What are some other good ones? I had Wild Hop Devil when I was in Minneapolis. Not my cup of tea. I don't like soured beers.

Their distributor of choice? Great Bay......a Budweiser distributor.

Storm King. The Prima Pils isn't bad either.

Drinking the Founders Harvest Ale tonight. Tasty stuff, I think I had this on tap once last year but I am not sure. Tastes an awful lot like an IPA to me, which is a good thing but the bitterness is toned down a bit. Really nice flavor and aroma though. Supposed to wet hopped, too bad this stuff is so damn pricey.

back from vegas...

the only new beer i got to try was a new belgium 1551. it was at the microbrew place in nyny. pour 24 was the name i think. we never made it to the yardhouse...next time. decent beer seemed hard to find. i ended up drinking a lot of macro crap with the occasional guinness or s.n. pale.

i hit up troegs today for a fill of dead reckoning and was surprised to see bombers of mad elf already.

mattman688 10-09-2009 06:27 PM

my favorite new belgium beer is their la folie...ooooh sooooooooooooooo goood

freebeer101 10-09-2009 07:50 PM

Copper Kettle Potbelly Porter

I don't know much about this relatively new PA brewery but I saw the blue/yellow label that I didn't recognize at a local pub and figured I had to give it a shot. Initial pour showed that it was way overcarbonated maybe just a funky batch but it smelled great. Coffee, chocolate sasafras and bit of a grassy smell. Once It settled down I took a swig. Great initial tasting beer with lots of malt showing through definate coffee and chocolate in there. A good heavy porter., but for some reason it had this funky, hard to describe rough finish that left a nasty taste in your mouth. Kinda like a combination of chalk and old fish, not really pleasant. I'm hoping it was just a messed up batch because the initial smell/taste was awesome. I'll have to give it another go sometime.

Mad elf already? are they even doing stout this year? I know they usually quit doing stout when the mad starts going into production but I haven't even seen the stout this year.

square_one 10-09-2009 08:30 PM

wow...copper kettle! where are you from? copper kettle is from bumfark pa (like 10 miles from where i grew up). i had their celebration wheat last summer...it too was overcarbonated. but not bad for a new brewery. i haven't had any of their offerings this year.

what troegs stout are you talking about? they have javahead stout out right now, but that is based off the scratch series. the fall beer is dead reckoning porter.

I'm in Numidia but I was down that way on Thursday. I'll be selling food at Shade Mountain winery today.

The Troegs I was thinking of was the Oatmeal. They may not have made it in awhile, I just haven't payed attention.
CK seems like it could be a solid brewery if they straighten out some of their issues.

Drinking a Hoppin Frog BORIS the Crusher Oatmeal Imperial Stout. The smell had me thinking I may not like it. But, I can barely taste any alcohol (9.4%) and it's very smooth for an Imperial Stout.

During the few hours I sat at the bar, I didn't see the bartender serve anyone that Bud Golden Wheat. I saw him go for Coors Light, regular Bud, Shiner, etc. tons of times, but never BGW. Hmm.

I don't know how much the bar was charging, but they had a happy hour where certain beers were 23 oz for the price of 16 oz. The Bud Golden Wheat didn't qualify in the HH special.

Hey guys.. I had to stop drinking beer. Wine is pretty good now. Just wanted to stop in and let you all know.

Yeah, whats up with that. I live near a college town that is known as a drinking school and every bar there has PBR on tap. This was one of the worst beers around when I was growing up and now these silly kids think it is the coolest stuff to drink. I know it's not because it's cheap cuz the bars are charging just as much as the premium brands.

I forgot how much I enjoy this beer. 7% alc. and very drinkable. For me the perfect serving temp is around 55-58. The warmer temp really brings out the flavor in this brew. I know fruit beers aren't everyones favorite but I like my pumpkin this time of year.

In past years I have, but not yet this year. I've known Dan Weyerbacher for years and he makes a great product. The Imperial is different from DFH but both are excellent examples of Pumpkin brew. I also like Southern Tier Pumpking but I can't session it like DFH. Post road is OK for a less expensive pumpkin offering. I paid over 50 bux for the case of DFH.

Edit: oh yeah, I almost forgot probably my favorite pumpkin ale is from Selinsgrove brewery. They only have it at the brewpub though. It's served on nitrogen which makes it veeery smoooth!

stuffed with surprises

Last night I was visiting a friend and we stopped at a private club that I hadn't been to in years. He's a member and wanted me to check it out. I've been ther before and it was always known as a Genny, Busch light type bar. We walked in and to my surprise they had this little glass front cooler with all kinds of goodies in it. I had an '08 Stone Russian Imperial Stout that was smooth as silk. I mean this stuff melted in you mouth and the nearly 11% was not even noticeable. Super dark and yummy and ony $3 a bottle. I then had a Breckenridge Vanilla Porter. Good stuff with lots of vanilla flavor., A German Black Lager that I can't remember the name of. I would of had more but the Stone was catching up to me:bounce: They had at least 10 different Stones, some looked vintage. 12oz. bottles were $3-$3.50 and bombers were $7. I wanted to grab a few to go but PA clubs are not alowed to do outside sales  I'll have to bribe the bartender next time.

There is actually a good chance I'll be there next weekend as well. Depends on the weather and whether or not we go camping or up to PA for the brewery.

Beer Festival

1 Attachment(s)
I went to Beer Festival yesterday. It was very well attended. Basically, a $15 fee got you a 4 oz. souvenir glass (like a double shot glass) and up to 10 samplings from among 20 beers. So, you get a total of 40 oz of beer (2.5 pints). That may not seem like much for $15, but trying out the various beers is pretty neat.

I must say that the beers I tried are much heavier, bitter, hoppier than what I'm used to. My fav. were the Hefe, both DFH (esp. Punkin), and I think Allagash or Brooklyn - I don't remember. :O

Normally, I wouldn't feel 2.5 pints of my usual beers, like Shiner, Leinenkugel, Blue Moon, etc. But after 40 oz. of these coupled w/ an empty stomach, I was a bit buzzed. Dinner and time sobered me up.

Attached is the card I got and indicated which beers I tried (look at the punched holes). I'd do this again next year.

Nice. I'm going to a free beer sampling tomorrow. It's a 400+ beer sampling put on by JJ Taylor Distribution for their bars, restaurants, and stores that they deliver to. JJ Taylor is the main distributor of micro brews in Florida. The guy I know who owns the tap house I frequent asked me to go with him to help him sample the beers. I had to think about it for about..........zero seconds. Hell yeah I'll go. LOL
