My mother is a practitioner (lucky me) and I've subscribed before. Psychology Today is definitely not Cosmopolitan but it's no Scientific American either. I'd say it is most like The Week. Complex developments are processed and refined to be digested as easily as white bread.
I do find it a quick, interesting read -- just ignore the advertisements that get more and more ridiculous as you flip through the pages.
A handful of articles are free online, but (when I last checked) most are not.
