im about to have a baby as well and was kind of on the same boat as You're, went with 4Ti with 18-135mm STM lens, turned out to be bit too complicated for a beginner so i returned it and got Sony Alpha A57 with similar 18-135mm lens which is also intimidating (DSLR after all) but i love this camera as it has guide in the camera that explain you about different type of photography and all...it has "?' button and its all there, brilliant lol.
Alpha A57 was much cheaper than T4i at the time with same 18-135mm lens.
I would strongly suggest you look into Sony Alpha A57, fantastic camera.
yes, this is exactly my fear: the complexity of a DSLR. after a quick google there seems to be a LOT of suggestions for mirrorless camera for amateurs like myself. i'm still investigating but the NEX from Sony looks like a winner in comparison. as tempting as the T4i is I don't want to spend money on something i'll hardly ever use because it's too bulky and too complicated.
can someone talk me out of the Sony NEX-5R?
