Others have already mentioned that silver requires you to wait 2 weeks whereas gold let you see new movies. But most theaters don't have reserved seating and they don't check for tickets. So I often used silver on older movies to watch the movies that requires gold.

And as some pointed out, the surcharge for IMAX and/or 3D is exactly the same for gold and silver. So realistically gold and silver are pretty much the same. Other than the Dine-in theaters I haven't found a situation where gold ticket will cost me less out of pocket.
