Yes. Depending on your body you might be able to get a f/1.8 prime for less money, but you lose the zoom and image stabilization. I picked this up as a compromise between my Nikon 35mm f/1.8 and 18-200mm VR f/3.5-5.6. I've been mainly shooting with the 35mm, but I miss the wide end and image stabilization. I haven't really missed the long, slow telephoto end of the 18-200mm.

There's a reason this type of lens is a staple in every event/wedding photographer's bag.
