For those like me who were coming from shared hosting and who are looking for something similar to cPanel, zPanel is what I decided on. Easy to install & doesn't come with quite as many bells and whistles out of the box, but it lets you install several additional modules that can do most anything you need.
Yeah cPanel is definitely not required, in my mind it's more of an annoyance. If you want to add it, however, I think they charge $15/month. Which, as far as I know, is roughly what it costs them.
When I signed up last week using the $40 code, cPanel was $10 a month - if you really need it, that's a pretty good deal. Give zPanel a try first though and see if it can't do whatever you need for free.
