Slickferret's Easy-Peazy 2-Minute Guide To Setting Up A PPTP Server On Ubuntu 12.04

Tested out on a fresh install...

1) Enable PPP in the vps control panel

2) Run the following commands:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install nano pptpd

3) Paste the following commands in:
Code:
sudo sed -i -r 's/^\s*#(net\.ipv4\.ip_forward=1.*)/\1/' /etc/sysctl.conf
# Reload the config file to have the change take effect immediately.
sudo -i sysctl -p
OUTIF=`/sbin/ip route show to exact 0/0 | sed -r 's/.*dev\s+(\S+).*/\1/'`
sudo -i iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface $OUTIF --jump MASQUERADE
# Enable NAT on boot from the rc.local script.
CMD="iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface $OUTIF --jump MASQUERADE"
sudo sed -i "\$i$CMD\n" /etc/rc.local
echo ms-dns 208.67.222.222>>/etc/ppp/pptpd-options
echo ms-dns 208.67.220.220>>/etc/ppp/pptpd-options
echo localip 192.168.0.1>>/etc/pptpd.conf
echo remoteip 192.168.0.234-238,192.168.0.245>>/etc/pptpd.conf
echo vpn1 pptpd iforgotmypw *>>/etc/ppp/chap-secrets
echo vpn2 pptpd iforgotmypw *>>/etc/ppp/chap-secrets
sudo /etc/init.d/pptpd restart
4) Then connect your client with username 'vpn1', password 'iforgotmypw'

I connected with an ipad, and went to http://www.whatismyip.com/ to verify the ip as coming from my vps.

You can change the username and pw by editing /etc/ppp/chap-secrets, or the code before you run the commands.
just wondering, wouldn't OPENVPN be better? Also do you have the link to the guy who posted a tutorial on openvpn before wiki was removed?

You'll get crazy newbies who call 3x a day for 2 weeks straight, and post argumentative paranoia demanding the rebate is guaranteed, in writing, by certified mail, on their doorsteps, by tomorrow evening. Then all the other newbie sheep freak out, and THEY call 3x a day, for 2 weeks straight, and the paranoia explodes. And suddenly everyone's carting their paper back to the retailer demanding a refund.
