Drobo encrypts the drives with their proprietary software so if the unit bricks, you have to have another Drobo unit to retrieve the data. That means that if you're unity is out of warranty, you have to buy another unit to retrieve your data.That, and the Drobo units often mistankingly report drives as being bad or suggest to the user that they need to be replaced when there aren't any issues whatsoever. I've heard of many people switching to the Synology units and have been very happy. Here's Scott Kelby's (Professional Photographer) experience with why he switched from Drobo....
