You would be correct. i747 (AT&T version of the phone) does not support the required bands for 4G on Tmobile. You'd only be able to get EDGE speeds, which would be a total waste.
Although, if Tmobile upgraded service in your area to support the 1900 band, you would be able to (I'm getting tihs all from Google, so I may not be completely right).

BTW, these phones (as well as several other Samsung phones) can be unlocked quite easily for free. Keep that in mind if you're shopping for one.
