One serious thing to consider is warranty..Canon just within the past 2 weeks is covering their refurbished DSLR's with a 1 YEAR PARTS/LABOR warranty! Best in the business..by far. And in my opinion, Canon has treated me very well with the few warranty issues (one out of warranty, they still fixed for free)..I can't say the same about Nikon, especially Panasonic.
To me the Canon menu system is easy to navigate, lens choices are endless and start out very inexpensive. Nikon is a great company with excellent products and at the entry level, I give their kit lenses a very slight edge over the same from Canon. That said, most any post processing software can correct most flaws and enhance your images.
