How would this be for an all around lens? I am going to Hawaii and just want to bring one lens to take pictures mainly of my 2 yr old.
Tons of debate over this lens and any lens with a wide focal range.

Bottom line is you're giving up picture quality for the convenience of zoom. How much picture quality and convenience depends on the user. Some people think an ultra sharp prime lens and carrying a suit case of various lenses is the only way to go and others think a lens with a focal range of 8-4000 is great because you can zoom in on a whale from 8 miles out even though you may not know its a whale when you're done.

Personally I think it's a good lens from what I read. It is not too expensive, has a very wide focal range, light weight, good build quality and takes good not great/professional photos. There is some proof shown in online comparisons of the picture quality and where it falters but personally I don't think it is too bad considering the convenience of 1 lens.
