TECH SUPPORT MASTER INDEX WIKI This is the official tech support master index wiki thread. It contains all the links to the how-to's and guides previously posted here as well as recently resolved issues and other useful information. With everyone's help in continuing to to keep the wiki updated, it would be a great start for those who are having problems and most importantly, it would avoid reposts of some frequently asked questions. Clearly, we are still missing a lot of useful links here but I posted this as a rough template we can use. When adding to the wiki, please try to keep the same format as I implemented so that it's easy to read and please post under the correct category (i.e. a resolved hard drive issue goes below the "PC hardware related" heading which is located under the "Recently resolved FAQs and problems" category). If you have any suggestions on how to improve the format or you have any other questions about this, feel free to PM one of us. Thanks to everyone who created all these guides for SD. Although many of them are a few years old, they are still applicable to today's problems. Finally, thanks in advance to those who take the time to update the wiki. It will go a long way to helping this forum.

I say it's good considering it's WIP, thanks nimaim, but it still does not cover enough of the FAQs addressed in http://forums.slickdeals.net/show...5&t=786985
I suppose it makes sense considering we actually don't have specific help threads regarding each topic. I could maybe start one sometime this weekend but my knowledge isn't that extensive so I'd rather not. for fillable pdf w/ Adobe Acrobat 8: http://www.themonkeyonline.com/pdf_guide.htm (someone asked this question in the lounge the other day) whoever does a thread regarding "best" virus protection please include this link (can't do direct links): www.av-comparatives.org/ thread should include both free AVs/ISs and subscription ones (separated)

Well yes it's still a WIP but if we get everyone to chip in, I do think that over time, those issues will be addressed. This was just a rough template to get everything in one place and to make it easier for the first timers. Thanks for your comments though ... we'll need everyone's input to get this thread going. The problem with the FAQ link you posted above is that everyone has a different perception of what needs to be addressed and what guides need to be put into place. Some of those guides we already have, and we will try to bring new users here before they start a new thread and repost something that has already been addressed.
Please feel free to add your links to the wiki. Last edited by nimaim; 04-04-2008 at 06:41 PM.. |

My opinion is that the open response thread option should be closed and all links for input to this thread should go through the OP to be approved and posted if appropriate. This will keep links to good guides from being stuck down here in an individual post rather than being posted in the Wiki as the thread intended. Post #3 is a perfect example -- there is not a category listed, although very much needed, for the link that is helpful to Adobe users.

Added: Sweet programs list, Wikipedia lists of software. I usually post these to give an idea of what programs are available and let people go from there.

Xnarg, great suggestions, feel free to edit it and change it up. Like I said, I just put it together in a couple of hours so that we could start something here. I agree with all three of your suggestions: simple descriptions, alphabetical order, and omitting contributor names to make it more readable and not clutter up the wiki. Also I like your suggestion about keeping the OS's separate, it'd be much easier to find what you're looking for that way. Thanks
The point of the wiki is that we can all contribute and change it so that it is acceptable to everyone. The SWEET PROGRAMS list is definitely cluttering up the wiki. As Xnarg suggested, we should really shorten up the descriptions. The wiki will be very big once we are finished with it and we don't want things taking that much space. As I said before, feel free to do what you think is best for the wiki. If someone disagrees, we can always revert back to an older revision of it. |

Removed all the contributor names. I don't think they're needed. If you click on a certain link, you can see who posted the respective guide / how-to / answer to a problem anyway. Wiki looks a lot cleaner this way. Anything else we should add?
