Is that $150 netbook a good deal? It's exactly my price range. I only need two things - a $150 netbook and a $500 42" plasma. But I have no idea about netbooks. Just need to make sure it has Windows instead of Linux.

I think you ask a fair question.
Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netbook
About.com: http://compreviews.about.com/od/b...tbooks.htm

I don't think most people will buy a netbook as a primary computer, but instead as a secondary for use in taking notes, carrying around with them, or just having at home to quickly grab and go surf the web from the armchair. Will you be able to play one of today's demanding games on it? No. Will one be able to watch hd video on it? Possibly (may require adding on a card). Will it do word processing, excel, etc? Yes.

Pros of a netbook (from my perspective): physical size and weight, price
Cons of a netbook (from my perspective): lack of cd/dvd drive, keyboard may be cramped, games or other visually demanding tasks may not be handled as easily

Would it work fine for your daughter child (I assumed daughter based on what you described...my mistake? Probably. Though if this were her primary computer, I can probably see a mid range laptop being a better choice so that she could watch movies on it, among other things.

I will be watching this thread carefully. Would like to know where I will be able to get 2 Netbooks on Black Friday. So many stores limit to one.

I'm so glad that my mom isn't on facebook with a giant cleavage shot and a location of "face down ass up" claiming to "love cajun sausage". Having said that , you aren't my mom and I dig on yo pic.

Let's talk about what is the best (fastest and/or highest res) out there. Or what up and coming.

I've had both Dell 9 with 2GB RAM and the newer Mini1010 2GB RAM. I got rid of them both cause they were just too slow. I even had SSD RunCore IV Pro on the latter.

I've read the the eeepc have the faster processor but have never had one to see how it runs.

At this point I would not mind paying a little more for something with decent speed that won't stutter upon playing a video or have hdmi but it won't run your LCD or not being able to multi-task.

An 11.6" screen size is not considered a netbook. That would be a laptop/notebook.

The largest netbooks are 10" screens. I've even seen something smaller than a netbook but larger than a smartphone/ipodtouch. Not sure what those are called. I heard someone refer to them as lightbooks but I think he was just reaching.

Back on topic: Netbooks

Anyone know of up and coming netbooks that may or may not debut on Black Friday?

There are plenty of 11 and 12" netbooks out there, the Acer Aspire One AO751h, HP Mini 311, Asus 1101HA, Gateway EC1435u, Lenovo S-12, Samsung NC20, MSI Wind U210. The manufacturers call them netbooks, the stores selling them call them netbooks, so it's probably safe to discuss them in the netbook thread.

I've heard the 12-13" screen range refereed to as ultra-portable laptops. I don't think it really matters what you call it though and think that anything less than or equal to 13" is applicable to this thread but could also be safely cross posted in the laptop thread.

My bad, I stand corrected. I went by the wrong manufacturer: Dell, they claim the 11Z not to be a netbook.

So yes, 11" & 12" but 13" is definitely a laptop.

In all seriousness: if you have to ask, you absolutely, positively, do not want this item. It will not run standard Windows programs. In fact, it will not run any version of Windows except CE. You cannot upgrade it to Windows XP, or VIsta, or Windows7. 128MB of RAM was standard for laptops 10 years ago. A 7-inch screen may give you 854x480 pixels; then again, maybe only 800x480. A standard netbook screen (8.9-10.1 inch) will give you 1024x600 pixels; the latest netbooks will even give you 1366x768 (720p). Standard netbooks come with anywhere from 512MB to 2GB of RAM; 128MB isn't very much these days. A standard netbook will come with an 8GB SSD (or a much larger hard drive); 2GB of storage is pretty paltry. On the plus side, battery life will likely be much better than on a standard netbook. If you want a large PDA, this might be the ticket; otherwise, give it a pass.
