Resize windows Partiton without Re-Installing

How do I re-size windows Partition without Re-installing windows..

Config : XP Home
C : (Windows) 10 GB -- Want to resize
D : abt 140 GB ...(take space from here)

So what utilities to use.....I think I've tried partition magic...but it dose not give any option for C: re-size, only D: is re-sizable.

TIA.

Partition Magic WILL DO IT

You'll have to move/resize D out of the way to make C bigger.

First you have to Make D smaller.

Take space from beginning of D.

Then Make C bigger.

I use Partition Magic all the time...Love it!

There are many ways, but FWIW, I use BootIt NG [terabyteunlimited.com]. And best of all, nothing to install (and hence no OS dependencies) and free for these purposes.

Download the installer, burn it to CD, and boot it. When the Welcome screen appears, hit Cancel (to abort the install) and proceed to the desktop. Now use the embedded partition manager to resize, move, etc., your partitions. Since you're not booted into Windows, you are free to manipulate ANY partitions to your heart's content.

Of course, anytime you're changing a partition, it's best to make a backup. You could use that same partition manager to create backup images or just copy the partitions to another HD.

The ultimate boot CD has many partition tools:

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

As DC wrote, you'll need to resize or remove the D partition.

I tried that...I made D: smaller..then. giving me some unused space ...and then trying to re-size C: did not show me that unused space...

You might have to make D smaller by creating unused space at the end of the D drive.

Apply those changes.

Then MOVE your D drive to the end of the Hard drive.

Apply the move D partition....this will take a while depending on how much data is on D.

Finally you can now re-size C to take up the empty space that should be between C and D.

DC's got it. shrink (by how much you want to increase C) then move D (to 'end' of drive) before you can increase C. D is probably a logical drive in extended partition, you got to work on that too, so that unallocated space is immediately 'after' C. at least that's the way my older versions of PM work.

you can queue up the operations so PM does them all at once (one after another after another); so it isn't as tedious as it sounds.

you did do your backups, right?

I've got PM8 from PM (not the re-packaged Symantec version) and it just "Handles" the extended/logicial/etc partitions w/o really any intervention from me.

Done!...I did the following steps..

1) Shrunk D: (so that I get some unallocated space)
2) Converted / Move the unallocated space to Primary Partition
3) Re-sized C: to use all of that Unallocated space.
