windows will recognize cd but wont boot from?

So I just bought windows 7, backed up all my files, planning to do the upgrade. Yet when I look in my dvd drive for setup.exe, nothing shows up. There's nothing in the drive. Also when I cd boot from bios, it just hangs and waits for a while then normal xp loads. Help! I also did the reg edit and deleted upper limits, and that didn't work. Can't believe this disc could be bad, no scratches or anything.

Bad DVD Drive or Bad Windows 7 DVD...

I would try to see if any other pressed DVD's work... (either to boot from or in windows... note use a retail DVD for testing cause sometimes ive seen drives that are starting to go bad be able to read burned dvd's but not pressed retail ones.. (same for cd's))

update: So windows 7 now will run after doing upperlimits regedit, only in my computer, and I click setup exe, and it says this is not a valid win 32 opperation. i assume this is bc im running xp 32 and trying to put in win764, is this true? I tried booting at start up, yet that still wont boot. Just hangs.

These are the "Student upgrade" ISO links for windows 7

Home Premium x86
http://msft-dnl.digitalriverconte...-65732.iso
Home Premium x64
http://msft-dnl.digitalriverconte...-65733.iso
Professional x86
http://msft-dnl.digitalriverconte...-65804.iso
Professional x64
http://msft-dnl.digitalriverconte...-65805.iso

Again they are from those Student ISO links.. They will probably accept your product keys but i really dont know...

You can convert those images to run off a USB Flash/Thumb drive by downloading the tool on this page (need at least a 4gb Flash Drive)
http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool

You cannot "upgrade" a 32bit system to 64 bit install... You have to do a custom install/boot off the disk.

I have to think it's the disk, I just took the exact same drive model and make from another comp, and it doesn't read the disk either.

well also you cant upgrade xp to windows 7 without doing a clean install anyways (you can only upgrade vista to windows 7 (of the same bits,, or higher version type (ie home premium to professional or ultimate etc))..

I would suggest running this if you want to easily transfer your data to your windows 7 installation (only data not programs)
http://www.microsoft.com/download...laylang=en

scratch that... thats the xp to vista one

try

do you have a DVD drive or only a cd-rom or cd-burner?

can you see files on the win7 disc while you're booted to windows xp? if not, but you're certain it's a dvd drive, can you watch a dvd movie? burn a data dvd? read files from another dvd disc? if not, then you've probably got a bad drive (do you have another you can pull from a different system to use temporarily?), if you can read those other dvd format discs, then perhaps you have a bum win7 disc.

do you have your retail box? have you tried the *other* disc? (both 32bit and 64bit media should be in the box)..

btw, the retail boxes are dvd, not cd.. cd format would require multiple discs due to amount of data on the dvd.

I have a dvd drive for sure. The problem was the drive, however it wasn't the mechanics, I had to change a value in the registry and then it worked fine. Now windows 7 is running. Thanks for everyones help.
