DD age 20 wants a camera for Christmas and has asked for the Canon model SD780. Don't know anything about cameras and want to get her something nice that is not tooo expensive. Don't know if this particular one is all that great. She is going abroad on a mini semester in college on Jan2 abroad. Any help would be great appreciated.

Get the Canon A1100 IS - it gives you better optical zoom and uses regular AA batteries for the same cost. It is also rated only of the best camera in that price range.

Not to overload you, but check out http://www.steves-digicams.com for reviews of practically every digital camera ever in the history of all mankind.
I particularly like the section labeled 'Best Cameras', where, incidentally, you'll find the SD780 listed under 'Ultra-Compact'. You can almost never go wrong with a Canon - that one in particular is a good choice. |

Canon A1100IS is a good buy too. However next week at staples(from this coming sunday), both cameras A1100 and SD780 will give you a $50 staples gift card with purchase. You can use the $30 off $150 coupon on SD780 or $$25 off $75 coupon on A1100
SD780 would be a great buy then considering the coupon and staples gift card more details in this thread http://slickdeals.net/forums/show...?t=1644882 |

A Series gives you more manual controls if you wanted to increase your skills with the camera and as mentioned before it has more zoom (I believe 4x vs 3x) and uses regular batteries compared to SD series.

SD series uses a proprietary battery which requires a special charger. A series will just use regular AA batteries - you could use rechargeables or in a crunch you could just buy some from a grocery store.
The optical zoom is 4x in the A series SD series are 3x zoom - note digital zoom is meaningless. Actually after looking at http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer...goryid=113I realized the A series can shoot pictures faster 2fps vs 0.8 fps for SD780. |

If you still want to buy the SD780 - checkout Staples. They seem to be offering it for $199 plus a $50 gift card starting from 11/08
