I got a problem with walmart return. I wanted to return my xbox 360 which I bought before the deal. I just wanted to return it, not return and rebuy to take advantage that deal. However at the point of return, they found out that the serial number on the xbox was different to the SN on the receipt. In specific, only differ by 1 digit (7 vs 9). How can that happen? They refused to refund me saying the SNs were different. I didn't touch the xbox and I am very sure that receipt corresponds to that console. Is there any way that I can have my money back from walmart?

Wow, I was nervous after seeing the serial was entered by hand on the first one; so I read the receipt to make sure they entered it correctly. I didn't even know they COULD have just scanned it like they did later. I wouldn't even have noticed or paid attention to that if not for people posting in this thread about the specifics of the serial number matching receipt.
Seems reasonable to assume that they transposed one number with the other. Like the other poster said i'd try to explain it them. And also point out the odds of you having a second Xbox with a serial that close....(especially shouldn't be a hassle for an exchange). Good Luck.

Imagine if MS does not ban the modded system then you would never know if your system has been tapered with. People who sell modded units are probably the same ones who cheat and scam the returns policy at Walmart, and everyone pays. Don't support them by buying modded xbox 360s.

First off it's not Walmart that takes the hit on these scams. (not condoning the swaps they suck...it also suxs that some Walmart's are reselling returned items as new etc.
BUT, you are awful presumptuous to think it's the actual MODDERS that are returning these gut swaps; there are lots of reasons people MOD things. Namely that, WE (*THE PEOPLE WHO SHELLED OUT THE CASH FOR X, Y, Z HARDWARE) OWN IT! We have the right to use it the way WE WANT; (WITHIN REASON...etc can't break the law etc.) [So no using it to bash in the head of a XXXXXX & stealing there cash...($#1++y GTA Reference....not funny I know]. It's also fine that Microsoft wants to keep games pure etc so they ban consoles that are modded for that among other lesser reasons. But don't paint people (hobbyists et. al) that like to tear apart, fix, change, and make better the things that we buy! If they want it that way then MS is going to have to do like Software companies are doing...and RENT the software licenses. MS can rent a box out & then have 100% control over modding, but until they offer that. Modding is just fine in & of itself; It's what's done with it that's the problem for people like me that are game purists and hate cheaters. But it wouldn't be the modders, but the people that got banned trying to use them online that now have banned units that would be doing the returns. And many of them are keeping or selling them legit-lee as some will buy just to play offline games they've cracked.
