I've got a printer without an ethernet port or wireless capabilities. The only way I can print is when its connected to my computer via usb. I just purchased a new desk, and I want to have the printer on the other side of the room, but don't want to run a usb cable all the way to it. Is there some kind of device I can connect it to so I can print wirelessly?

Sure it does. They're called wireless print servers generally. There are some wireless routers out there that have USB ports and can be rigged as print servers, too, though this becomes complicated. The ASUS WL-500GU router with DD-WRT installed comes to mind.

Err, wireless print server? They're pretty common actually, but they're finicky with older printers and aren't always very reliable.

Blehh, I've had nothing but headaches from these wireless print servers, from brand name manuf too. I just gave up and hook them to an ethernet wire. So make sure you read the reviews and buy from somewhere that has good return policy (that means no ebay)

If you can...you could get a hard-wired print server...run the patch cord back to your router and then usb to the printer...if your pc/laptop is wireless, then it uses your wireless router to forward the print job over to the printer via the patchcord connected to the print server.

I've got a Netgear wireless print server that's been going strong for ~4 years. I forget the model number now, but I can check when I get home. Plays nicely with my D-Link router, and I can print from my Windows box or Mac powerbook. Setup was not entirely straightforward, but once you get it set up, it's nice.

Food for thought...if it's a HP brand USB printer...then forget most everything...a lot of them will only work if hooked to a pc and shared out...or you get a HP JetDirect external Printserver.

I tried ALL the brands and off names to try and get it to play nice with my hp...and was an "epic fail"...I didn't want to pay 150% of the printer cost, just for a print server. I wound up running a USB extension cord through the floor to my Dungeon (er, "basement") and hooked it to my Windows Server.

Why wouldn't he just run a usb wire to his printer if he wanted to hardwire it? Wasn't the whole point of this to move the printer across the room and not have to wire it?
